Xbox 360 maintains its lead in the U.S. console market – marking the 21st consecutive month as the top-selling current-generation console in the U.S.

September 2012 U.S. NPD highlights:
· Xbox 360 sold 270,000 units in September, more units than any other current-generation console, and held 49 percent share of current-generation console sales in the U.S. This marks the 19th consecutive month that Xbox 360 has held more than a 40 percent share of current-generation console sales in the U.S. (Source: NPD Group, September 2012)

· Total retail spend on the Xbox 360 platform in September (hardware, software and accessories) reached $380 million; consumers spent more on Xbox 360 products in September than they spent on the other two current-generation consoles combined. (Source: NPD Group, September 2012)

· During the month of September, Xbox 360 held six of the top 10 U.S. console game titles including: “Madden NFL 13,” “Borderlands 2,” “FIFA Soccer 13,” “NHL 13,” “NCAA Football 13,” and “Sleeping Dogs.” (Source: NPD Group, September 2012)

There has never been a better time to own an Xbox 360 than this holiday and the month of October is packed with exclusive Xbox 360 title launches including, “Forza Horizon,” “Dance Central 3” and “Fable: The Journey.” And, the highly anticipated “Halo 4” will launch on Nov. 6. This fall, we will also continue to simplify entertainment, introducing new experiences like Internet Explorer for Xbox 360, Xbox for Windows 8, Xbox SmartGlass and Xbox Music.

prefer the Zune name instead of Xbox Music.

Sad to see them change it but i understand them wanting to transform that division into the more mainstream xbox moniker.

No different than Apple "i-ing" everything. i this and i that because of the popularity of ipod and itunes.

aviator1894233d ago

I agree. I'm disappointed Zune didn't catch on, but I think Xbox Music will do better due to the name change and the spotify-esque services.

Great sales. According to neogaf calculations...

NPD September 2011

Playstation 3: 364K-374K (Calculations deduced from Sony and MS PR percentages) [+16.7-19.8%]

[360] 270k (49 percent share of current-generation console sales)
[PS3] 218k - 224k (-40%)
[Wii] 57k - 63k (PS3 + Wii 51 percent share of current-generation console sales = 281k)

[3DS] 219k - 249k (PS3<3DS<250k)

Looks like the PS3, 360 and 3DS sold well but overall the two consoles dropped in sales from last year.

Source: http://www.neogaf.com/forum...

Edit: @ Dark360 above

Why does everyone lose their minds everytime the NPD report comes out? It's only a 46k difference between the PS3 and 360 lol.

Ryo-Hazuki4233d ago

WTH

Since when is gaming consoles about countries? Is this the new modern fanboy trend or something. You should like consoles for their games and services not because it's MS who is based in America.

dubt724233d ago

Buy American (except cars)! BTW, I'm Japanese-American, and don't like Sony.

Knight_Crawler4233d ago (Edited 4233d ago )

I am surprise you would ask such a question being that you have a Japanese name and avatar.

Japanese people do the exact something and in there country they dont buy American product but support there home products like crazy.

Look at the 360 sales in Japan and look at PS3 and Wii.

I love America and wish more things were made here instead of Japan or China.

Ryo-Hazuki4233d ago (Edited 4233d ago )

A name of the lead character of Shenmue...my favorite game. Who would ask such a stupid question I'm sure you never heard of it right. And I'm a white American who lives in Texas. Like I said this must be a modern gamer thing because true gamers don't worry about stupid shit like that. Yes, I know there are people like that but it's just so stupid to me in the game industry especially MS only been in the console business for like 11 years. This must be a new age gamer

InactiveUser4232d ago

"I love America and wish more things were made here instead of Japan or China." & "Buy American"

FYI - Just because Microsoft is an American company, doesn't mean their products are made in the USA. Xbox 360s are made in China.

MariaHelFutura4232d ago

@TheRealHeisenberg

I just wanted to point out that Ryo-Hazuki's avatar is from Shenmue. A game that only released on Dreamcast and ***XBOX***.

Gamer19824232d ago (Edited 4232d ago )

But that's the point Americans are patriotic people and buy American in most cases its why the 360 dominates only in America and nowhere else in the world. It's why Nintendo and Sony destroyed it in Japan. Europeans are the odd ones out neither consoles come from Europe so they choose the best and in general they chose wii for casual and hardcores mostly chose ps3.

mcstorm4232d ago

Gamer1982 i have to agree about Europe as its a mixed bag on what sells more where. In the UK we sell more 360s than ps3s. Thats why the 360 has sole around 9 million here and only 5 million ps3s.

I own 2 of each like but i said at the start of this gen the wii eould out sell both tbe 360 and ps3 because it was a console for everyone and then the 360 and ps3 will be split down the middle and i was right.

Imo none of them are the best console as they both have + and - points the only way to get the best home console is to own them all.

I dont know why people go on about sales about the consoles though as this should not matter it should be about games and what games you like.

If you like more games on one console than another then this is the console for you but if you dont like a game or console why do people like to go on about it as its not something you will buy so why complain.

I want sony microsoft and nintendo to do well in every gen as it gives us gamers a choice and keeps each company pushing each other so we get the best out of them all and i think thats what this gen has done on all 3 consoles in terms of games addons andupdates the consoles have had and long may it continue i say.

Doing well? Compared to what? This is damn near a 40% drop year over year for the month of Sept in keeping with what has been a terrible year for the 360 compared to last. Last year in Sept, according to the NPD data the 360 moved 438k, now only 270k?

To put this into perspective, this is the worst US showing for the 360 since 2006, by far.

If it's this bad in the 360's primary territory, you gotta wonder how bad the numbers are across the industry, and world wide for that matter.

nukeitall4233d ago

With a 49% market share, it also illustrates how bad the competitors are doing.

Keep in mind the Xbox 360 hasn't had a price drop in ages, while the competition has. Specifically the PS3 has had 2 price drops while Xbox 360 has had none it still comfortably maintains it lead.

It amazes me the Xbox 360 still sells the numbers it does with no price drop at all.

darthv724233d ago

we all know there is a decline. It is usually what happens before something else comes out. i mean the wii has been on a decline even before the wii-u but now it has slowed even more since that announcement.

MS hasnt announced anything as of yet but that does not mean the decline could be eluding to something else. We are hitting a saturation point to where buying new isnt the main thing. We could use the tough economy excuse but there could be some truth to that. As there would be so many out there that become bored with their platform and offer them up for half price on craig list.

So while they may have only move 270k in retail, can you imaging how many changed hands through private party? That would be an interesting statistic to track. And i will admit, both of my 360's and my ps3 were bought 2nd hand. i may not have contributed to the numbers originally but i certainly do when it comes to buying games.

Bad? PS3's 224k and the 3DS's 249k sales are bad? There's only a 46k difference between the PS3 and 360.

Source: http://www.neogaf.com/forum...

Edit: Update for Vita numbers. It increased this month. It sold above 50k this month.

Edit: Why is darkride66 getting so many disagrees? He kinda right if you compare sales from last year, 2006 and the sales we have today.

4Sh0w4232d ago (Edited 4232d ago )

"Compared to what?"

lol, so let me get this straight darkride, as you say 360 fell from 438k to 270k year over year yet they have a market share of 49% which effectively means that even in a declining console sales cycle/saturated market, 360 is still grabbing the Lions share of consumer gaming dollars, yet you can't understand what Microsoft is happy about that, lmfao really? If anything your post only demonstrates how poorly Microsoft's competition (wii & ps3) are doing by comparison.

Dante, uhm maybe I missed it in your neogaf link but didn't see those numbers but 3ds is not a competitor of 360 in terms of console sales, also if 360 sold 270k at 49% market share that leaves 51% for both ps3 & wii at 281k combined, with 19 consecutive months over 40%, while competitors have had more price drops, which at least indicates your competitors are consistently losing ground in the US= yes that's bad for a brand that dominated only 1 Gen ago.

unchartedxplorer4232d ago

Really I sometimes hate americans. The americans only buy the xbox because it is american and like all american stuff it stops working after a couple of years. Oh and knight crawler if everything was made in america every single household will have to waste 1000's on rebuying appliances.
I'm surprised the xbox isn't selling as well as it is in america.

http://www.gameinformer.com...
Oh yeah the wii.

The fact that MS had a year head start and still can't outsell ps3 by a great margin makes it obvious the ps4 next gen will dominate it.

miDnIghtEr20C_SfF4232d ago (Edited 4232d ago )

What are you talking about no core gaming on the 360.

As far as I've known this whole gen, 3rd party games have been great, and most of the times they are better on the 360. And those are most ALL core games. The biggest game of this gen is COD, and everyone knows its better and has exclusive timing for the 360. That's the biggest core game you have out there.

I think people are getting exclusives and "Core games" confused. Ya, 360 doesn't have as many exclusives as PS3, but the multi plat games that are great, far outnumber the exclusive games from both sides that are great.

LOL at all this core gamer nonsense that has been the new cry around the internet for the last year or so. Must be because this gen is wrapped up, and the PS3 never made that huge Tsunami move.

Great news! Microsoft sure has locked down North America, it helped them a lot in becoming number 1 worldwide in 2011. They will probably sell a ton on Black Friday yet again, I think last year they sold 1 million units on that one day.

Knight_Crawler4233d ago (Edited 4233d ago )

Black Ops + Halo 4 + Black Friday + Xmas = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ for MS.

Edit: Alot of negative people on here but congrats MS and hope the 720 shares the same success.

The 360 reminds me of the story of David and Goliath the 360 being David and the other once huge in America being Goliath.

Christopher4232d ago

David is the company that has a practical monopoly on Operating System software used worldwide and billions of dollars in profits each quarter due to this monopoly versus two companies that have focused more on R&D in hardware to make the hardware we have today and progress gaming to where it is?

Very poor analogy.

I'm wondering how many of these are bought by first time buyers and those bought by people who have broken consoles? Now I'm sure it's the same for all consoles but I'm about to buy my forth 360 since I got my original one six years ago as my current one is pretty much on it's last set of legs.

darthv724233d ago

for your loss. Or soon to be loss, whatever the case may be.

As to your question. Did MS completely shutdown the 3 year replacement program once the slim was released? if not then those who have one within the period would certainly go that route to get it fixed.

As for myself i have two. My 05 launch system which i have had repaired once and my 07 elite which has been solid. Could be that these sales are a combination of new and returning users. Not specifically buying as replacements but could be "in addition to" as in wanting to have more than 1 in the home.

nothing wrong with that.

neoMAXMLC4233d ago

Microsoft's Absurd Antics Have Me Scared For Dishonored And Arkane Lyon's Future

With Arkane Austin no more and Lyon living for who knows how long, the superb Dishonored is in serious danger; Microsoft cannot be trusted.

There won't be no more acquiring game publishers from Microsoft in the future . Xbox has to pay Microsoft back. It might take two decades to do that.

sagapo2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

I don’t understand what you’re saying. Xbox IS microsoft so there’s no “paying back “.
And MS gross profit in 2023 was over 140 billion dollars so forget your 2 decades.

Unless you mean the money MS invested in Xbox (acquisitions included) and the time it will take for xbox as a brand to gain that money back on it’s own, then yeah, that could take a while.

romulus232d ago

The better term to use might be return on investment, xbox is simply a division of Microsoft one that MS can easily do away with if profit margins are not met. So in that regard he's right, if xbox isn't showing the expected return on investment the higher ups are expecting than it's unlikely Microsoft will acquire any other studios any time soon, especially if they are spending billions buying developers just to shut them down in the end.

MrBaskerville2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Xbox is a division that they discussed shutting down but doubled down on after Gamepass was pitched.

It needs to make money at some point. Big money.

rokos2d ago

According to Statista the net income of Microsoft is about $72.4 billion dollars which is a bit lower than last year profit. That is almost as much as Activision's acquisition but I assume that would be a one off since it costs so much plus I see how their focus has been shifted to AI, thus any major future investments will probably be in that area.

Markusb332d ago

i think you are really missing the point

VariantAEC1d 17h ago

@romulus23
That is not why MS buys studios. They might continue to buy because it's about taking that sweet sweet IP out of the corporate husks of their acquisitions.

Xbox isn’t a separate company from Microsoft. It’s all Microsoft.

Abear212d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Let’s be real, this is the media spinning all the acquisitions and liquidations of said developers and spinning it to make M$ the villain.

This was bound to happen, a bigger slice of pie and cut costs, when the games come they stand to make more and that’s their agenda—it was the writing on the wall when the sales went through and legally all those who approved the sale and mergers knew this would happen.

Snowflakes need to realize business is ugly and you can cry all you want but this is how capitalism works. And it works.

That said, M$ needs to steer the narrative and grab hold of all this, make their plans known, hype the hell out of all those dead IP’s they plan to revive, and be honest about the timeline. This is likely to involve mobile and IP on other consoles, and most people realize that.

The problem is this company is incapable of being transparent and seems to often want to dissuade and confuse is customer base. The lack of E3 has hurt Microsoft and I don’t think they know how to properly or effectively market their brand anymore.

jwillj2k42d ago

There really needs to be a class action lawsuit here. You buy these companies just to put people out of jobs. And it’s not like something happened to derail their plans this WAS the plan. Microsoft has no business in this space at all.

franwex2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Microsoft has been doing this for years. They simply want the IPs. Look at Nokia. Look at Skype. This time it simply expanded to games. Gaming is not as important to Microsoft’s executives as it was to the founders too. Bill Gates was willing to sell the og Xbox at a loss. Steve Balmer approved the red ring of death fiasco. This CEO isn’t really a gamer.

-Foxtrot2d ago

Maybe it's time though to put a stop to it and use a big giant like Microsoft as a huge example to the rest of these big companies.

There has to be a line drawn somewhere.

People like the FTC and the like went against Microsoft yet their Actvision deal was still allowed to go through yet look what's happened...it's not even Acitivisions studios aswell, it's Bethesdas.

VariantAEC1d 17h ago

Years?

Try several decades, and in the gaming space 2.3 decades.

Jon615862d ago

You do realize this happens in ALL industries? Or are you just saying this because it is Microsoft? In any case I feel for those that are being let go but the trch industry is suffering right now.

jwillj2k41d 21h ago (Edited 1d 21h ago )

This absolutely does NOT happen all the time. Let me know the last time 1 company with a terrible product track record spent 100 billion onto acquire MULTIPLE successful companies in under a year only to shut them down and stop making their products regardless of how successful they were. Not merge them, completely shut them down.

And you can’t use Microsoft in your example.

Notellin1d 21h ago (Edited 1d 21h ago )

Class action lawsuit? The law is on their side and protects them at all costs. There are no rules to protect the people at the bottom.

Ninja Theory, Perfect Dark, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Wolfenstein 3, Dishonored, Prey, Doom, Quake... something tells me that bad things are going to happen to these entities under Microsoft.

MrDead2d ago

ID software, the makers of Doom and Wolfenstein that have been with us since 1991 could be gone and MS will keep the IPs.

I hope some of these studios can buy their freedom from MS otherwise this is going to be even more devastating for the industry and gamers.
