At GameStop, Wii U Deluxe sold out in less than 2 days. The PS3, in less than an hour...both models

The news that GameStop sold out all of its pre-order stock of Wii U Deluxe Sets has Nintendo fans rejoicing. While this is certainly good news for the big N, Wii U Only believes it's always a good idea to put things in perspective.

"Then again, GameStop reportedly had only 13 to 16 pre-order slots for Sony's console at each store"

Exactly. And I know we don't know the exact number of units Nintendo is shipping, but I'm sure after the Wii success they would ship more than JUST 13-16 units per store.

Azmatik4257d ago

Ud be surprised, id bet they only had 5-8 units

BrutallyBlunt4257d ago

http://www.computerandvideo...

Nintendo plans to sell 4-5 million by March of 2013. We have no idea at this point whether or not they will meet or exceed that target. That's roughly 1 million units per month.

Nimblest-Assassin4257d ago (Edited 4257d ago )

Really? Its still up for pre order here in Canada, like everywhere...

Right now, I don't have the cash for a wiiU so this will be the first nintendo system I don't get at launch... but I will wait for a bundle that includes Smash or Zelda

live2play4257d ago

id love for all the people saying nintendo is purposefully creating a shortage (despite nintendo wanting to sell 1 million a month) to increase demand

to say that when the ps4 720 start selling out

CerebralAssassin4257d ago

My store took 23 preorders on the 32gb system alone. Very far from 5-8.

HappyGaming4257d ago

Then again 23 slots covered in 48 hours is a lot slower than 13-16 covered in 1 hour.

Unless we get unit numbers though we can't say much.

For example:
@Shok "I'm sure after the Wii success they would ship more than JUST 13-16 units per store."

Well the PS2 was also greatly successful and yet Sony still only shipped out 13-16 units.

Like I said we can speculate but at the moment this is not hard evidence that the Wii U is selling fast.

ATM!

knowyourstuff4257d ago

People always seem to forget - every single console sells out for months on end when it is first released. It doesn't matter what the day 1 preorders are, or how fast they sell out on day 1. They will continously sell out day after day for months, just like they always do (unless its a dreamcast).

cruxito4257d ago

actually no ones knows the real number per store, but even if the numner were the two digits, well all know all know 98% of those preorders is the people who are looking to make a profit out of it.

so the question is How many of those truly nintendo gamers are buying the console.

jeseth4257d ago

Who cares?

There is in now way the kind of buzz for the Wii U that there was for 360 or PS3. I don't know anybody preordering a Wii U and nobody is talking about it.

Why is this even a story? They approve some questionable stuff here!

Jadedz4257d ago

I've already pre-ordered the deluxe version (paid in full), so I ain't complaining :P.

ABizzel14257d ago

Actually there were plenty of articles over the summer saying Nintendo was having production issues with the Wii-U, and launching Worldwide within the same year, isn't helping the number of units per store.

The fact that they're not selling individual tablet controllers due to producing more consoles, so I don't think Nintendo has as many consoles as we may think.

ronin4life4257d ago

I have a feeling they have worked hard to iron out such issues. The "late" Japanese release and rumored later European release may be the result of workarounds meant to circumvent production shortages.

Your point can't be ignored however, as they very well could have been affected as such by these issues.

kreate4257d ago

I just called 4 local gamestops and they all had plenty of basic model wii u left. Only deluxe models are sold out.

kneon4257d ago

Not necessarily, it could all be deliberate. By shipping few units on launch day they create the illusion of scarcity which get's people desperate to have one, just because it's hard to get one. The masses aren't that bright, if they see people lining up to buy something then many will decide they need to have one.

Just wait and see if closer to Christmas there are suddenly plenty available, that would indicate it's all part of the marketing scheme.

rainslacker4257d ago

It worked well for the Wii, Apple products, Furby's, and Tickle Me Elmo Dolls. Where do you think these articles every year about that years "thing to have" come from.

With the original Wii, I think Nintendo was caught off-guard with the actual demand.

ipe4257d ago

According to gaf its 20 units.

topgeareasy4257d ago

Black bond was right

"White Knight Shokio doing damage control"

Shok4257d ago

.......Except no damage has been done lol.

Wow you people are throwing that word around now even when it doesn't make sense to use it! LOL

topgeareasy4257d ago

@shok

a defensive comment, playing down what it stated above = damage control

if their was no damage were you just rambling or something else?

PopRocks3594257d ago

Nah, Shok wasn't really rambling. His opinions are different from yours and you're calling it "damage control."

Typical honestly.

Knushwood Butt4257d ago

Shok just lurks in the unapproved Nintendo threads, waiting to find one with no comments and that needs a bit of damage control. Then BAM, there he is.

aceitman4257d ago

and u have to think about the ps3 being 499-599 and that was in minutes not days .so if was cheaper to make they would have had more to sell.

cruxito4257d ago

why u got disagrees when stating the TRUTH is BEYOND me U_U ... Yes the playstation 3 was sold out everywhere for months straights, people were paying 2-3 times the retail price online. i couldnt buy play3 until a year later lol.
the question here is not the Wii-U sales, is How many of those preorders are people who are actually buying it for themselves n NOT to make a profit out of it?

Old McGroin4257d ago (Edited 4257d ago )

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is being released for the Wii U next March, for that reason and that reason only:
http://i3.kym-cdn.com/photo...

Megaton4257d ago

It's probably a similarly small amount. It's an old PR trick. Fake extreme demand to create real demand.

showtimefolks4257d ago

why do we have to compare a 349-299 system to 599?

its 2 different systems early buyers always buy on these to sell on eBay for 2 times what it will cost at store, here is an idea why don't these publishers release 5 million system at launch? you know why because there won't be 5 million people buying.

they release limited numbers so it seems like its selling out. If there were enough to go around than you would see a lot of systems on shelf.

end of the day i want Zelda in HD the day it comes out me buying wii-u till than my ps3 and xbox360 will do me a fine job since every 3rd party game will be released on both systems

geddesmond4257d ago

Still those 13-16 units sold out in an hour for PS3. Even if Nintendo had 100 per store its still no indication of how well the consol will end up selling considering it took them a day or so to sell out and Sonys 13 took an hour but we all know how bad the PS3s first 2 years were.

Also remember the PS2 was the biggest selling consol in history and it still ended up selling under predictions so the Wiis sucess is nothing to go by either.

Moonman4257d ago

1 store? Ok, now do Best Buy, Walmart, Kmart, Target, etc. that's also selling out.

xGrunty4257d ago

There is no allocation per store. There is a universal allocation for the company. Once it's reached, the pre-orders stop to make sure we can guarantee the orders.

r1sh124257d ago

Errm...
THe way this gamestop pre order stock works.
They take the pre orders, the head office/ distribution teams will try to fulfil each stores pre order list, so 1 store might sell 100 WII U's and another may sell 5.
The probably have a rough idea (if not an accurate idea) of the total stock they will be getting.
Now they know the pre-order figures by store they can send out the correct numbers of consoles to each store accordingly.

Its just a logistics thing

Gamer19824257d ago

I thought pre-orders - shipped means nothing these days right?

Abash4257d ago

Let's wait for launch sales of Wii U

Gamer19824257d ago

Launch is one thing its what happens afterwards. Look at the 3DS it sold a lot day 1 then sales plummeted till price dropped and Mario came along.

neogeo4257d ago

I missed out on the pre orders, now I hope there is not a massive shortage:(

LOGICWINS4257d ago

There most likely will. Expect Nintendo to purposely skimp on supply. People naturally want things they can't have. The fact that the Wii U will be hard to get on launch day will make consumers go even more crazy over it.

live2play4257d ago (Edited 4257d ago )

yes because making less consoles availiable will help them reach their goal of selling 1 million or more a month...

its stupid speculation

something CANT just sell out because alot of people want it

nono there HAS to be an evil scheme to fool people
there just HAS to be

funny how i see alot of people, (mostly ps360 fanboys) say oh they are selling out because nintendo is purposely making shortages

oh no but if the ps4 720 are selling out
oh wow its a great success!!111
and no one will acuse those companies of evil scemes

LOGICWINS4257d ago

Evil scheme? Buddy, its called hyping up a product. The same thing was done with Kinect and the PS3.

Bigkurz854257d ago

live2play: it's precisely what happened with the wii. you are silly.

dudeOplenty4257d ago

live2play: Are you having a lot of fun at the beach these days? the weather is still nice.

How do I know you've been going to the beach? because it sounds like you have sand in your vagina.

rainslacker4257d ago (Edited 4257d ago )

@live

Actually live, this is exactly the way to sell 1 million a month. Expect next week the mainstream media picking this story up and there being a small steady supply leading up to the holiday buying season. Everyone will want to get one as a gift for Christmas, but the perceived supply will be limited, thus increasing demand.

Probably soon after Black Friday you'll see an increase in supply and people will feel awesome for being able to pick one up as an awesome Christmas gift and feel they are the most awesome person ever for it.

With the Wii they did the same thing, however the actual demand was huge, much bigger than most console launches, and it caught a lot of people off guard.

It's all about perception and this is a very common marketing ploy. Never forget that the average consumer (ie. the masses) tend to have a mob mentality about this kind of thing, and don't really reason out what goes on behind the scenes.

I don't doubt that GS, Best Buy, Amazon, etc are sold out of their pre-order allotment. However, allotment doesn't equal all the consoles that will be available.

I personally have my pre-order in so I don't have to worry about it either way.:)

Gamer19824257d ago

Nintendo ADMITTED to shorting wii stock to boost sales and it worked amazingly. People get paid to come up with these marketing schemes you know? It's not about how much you can sell in a month its about how much money you can sell over its lifetime.

TacoTaru4257d ago

I almost missed out. I assumed - mostly from the Nintendo negatives I find on this site - that pre-ordering wasn't going to be an issue since nobody really cared about it anyway. I ended up ordering the standard unit because all the deluxe ones were gone. Another few hours and I would have missed that too.

Khordchange4257d ago (Edited 4257d ago )

Shane Satterfield said the gamestop he went to was selling 30 to 40 and they sold out.

dirthurts4257d ago

I'm anxious to try one. I'm not really a pre-order a game system kind of guy, but I'm excited to see what they're like when they hit store displays.

How Many More Victims, Like Garry's Mod, Will Nintendo's Hurtful Crusade Create?

Hanzala from eXputer: "As Nintendo takes out 20 years' worth of stuff from Garry's Mod, I watch in shock, thinking why it continues to hurt and discourage its fans."

RiseNShine10d ago (Edited 10d ago )

The irony that some of the most disgusting business practices come from companies like Disney or Nintendo, i can't even begin to understand what terrible damage was Garrys Mod making to Nintendo bottom line, imho they're getting pretty nervous about where they're heading in the future, handhelds are no longer something exclusive to Nintendo, from Steam Deck to many others, now you can play the latest games and pay a fraction of the price on Steam sales, so it's up to their exclusives, which just on their own would make hard to justify purchasing a closed overpriced hardware with outrageous price policies (Super Mario Odyssey is still 60 euro 6 years later!), and as a home console they're always underperforming compared to Sony or Xbox.

gold_drake9d ago (Edited 9d ago )

i cam guarantee you, that their exclusives alone is what drives switch sales. they sell in the 10s of millions of copies.

nintendo created their franchises to be sort of nostalgia driven, exclusive only on nintendo.

people will always buy the pkmn games as they always bring in new younger fans amd is family friendly

mario kart, the same thing, mario games in general.

zelda games are system sellers. animal crossing for the casual gamers.

nintendo doesnt need third vame devs essentially. they made sure with the switch and the limitations that they looked more to pc ps and xbox.

its sad, but nintendo is more than fine with what they're doing. they positioned themselves to appeal to the more casual gamers.

but to your point, im not sure why they're doing this rly.

Inverno9d ago

Look at how they handled Nintendo games being streamed or uploaded on YouTube in the past. They killed Yuzu and Citra even when they had nothing to do with ToTK being leaked, not to mention it was basically unplayable on emulation the week it was leaked. Smash Bros tournament, that was fairly recent. They shut down their online services without any care for purchases made. I bought a switch after skipping their last 2 consoles and handhelds but I don't plan on buying anything Nintendo in the future. They take things to the extremes, they legitimately hate their fans. They're honestly right up there with the likes of Acti, EA, and Ubi, only difference is that they disguise themselves as being family friendly all the while being shady.

Nintendo's Massacre Of The 3DS And Wii U Is Finally Complete, Regrettably

Hanzala from eXputer: "The cruel hammer of Nintendo has fallen. Farewell, 3DS and Wii U, you surely brightened my life and many others; you won't be forgotten."
