Gamekult review: The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim

Quests are better structured, spectacular moments abound, and the title's nordic ambiance is greatly immersive. But you will also find - and it was inevitable - small glitches, pathfinding issues, continuity errors, repetitive load times and retarded allies who each contribute distracting little touches.
Nothing dramatic, nothing new either. This Elder Scrolls stays true to its roots.
Although it borrows some ideas from other heavyweights of the genre, Skyrim remains rather tame in terms of fundamental innovations and, unlike Oblivion five years ago, does not have a monopoly on its niche anymore. Risen, New Vegas and in a slightly different way, The Witcher 2, have left their mark.
Still, we are in presence of a solid and ambitious title, with an inspired art direction, immersive and time consuming.

Why is Gamekult so strict, do they hate videogames or something?

Gears 3, Uncharted 3, Skyward Sword, Arkham City and Skyrim all got 8s. Where's the 9s? but a quick browse I found DS games got 9s...

coolbeans4550d ago (Edited 4550d ago )

That's actually something that inclines me to listen more attentively to Gamekult's reviews, especially when 10's get tossed around like candy. I've heard some of those DS games have amazing stories (by certain players).

i dont know if strictness adds to their credibility, you can hand out 9' and 10's to games even if their not perfect. virtually no game will ever be, it could always use co-op or multiplayer, or it has this tiny bug, or it could ahve ended this way. it cant be perfect becuase every fresh pair of eyes will have a different idea of what it could/should be. but if you rate a game simply on whats there and that game does something others dont, or does something others do but far better than any before it, or it sets the standard for future features in a genre, than those types of games deserve 9's and 10's even if their not perfect in every way.

a couple examples.....
halo 2=made matchmaking a standard in console fps
rainbow six-made leveling a standard in online multiplayer ( some will say cod but rainbow six did it first )
gta3=set the standard for open worlds
ES=more or less defined the western open world rpg

and on to skyrim, i only played a few hrs last night but i can already tell that they created a world unlike anything that has ever been in a game, from the size to the art direction to the population. toss in the streamlined game-play ( but not abandoned rpg elements, this is truly a streamlined rpg *cough bioware take note* ), than despite a few glitches here or there or a few features that could be slightly better ( the melee strikes need to feel like your hitting something ) the package as a whole easily is a 10, at least imo

Captain, very smart comment.....well said.

disturbing_flame4550d ago (Edited 4550d ago )

Yes it's true, actually they review on 10 but they never accorded a perfect score to any game.

The best score they gave is 9, only few games reached it, Uncharted 2 is one of those game.

8 is a really good score in their system of notation.

PS : BTW the test is not linked to the news actually this is the preview. How can such news can be approved without verifying it ?

I agree with MJ3 about their strictness.

CGI-Quality4550d ago

As do I, especially since a 10 doesn't mean the game is flawless.

Chuk54550d ago

Agreed. (Especially about the 10 comment)

Fishy Fingers4550d ago (Edited 4550d ago )

8/10. Que the nerd rage! Because you know, 8/10 is a terrible score, any gamer knows 8/10 means its not worth playing...

DasTier4550d ago

Lol tell that to people who commented on this

I'm Replaying Skyrim (again), and So Should You

Replaying Skyrim after 13 years is a reminder of the progress made in western RPGs over the last decade, but also what's been lost.

anast21d ago

I tried, but it's a poorly made game that insults its customers.

lucian22920d ago

nah, only mods make it decent, and even then it's bad, and this is after i modded for at least 3 years

Nittdarko20d ago

Funnily enough, I'm about to play it for the first time in VR with 1000 mods to make the game playable, as is the Bethesda way

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave21d ago (Edited 21d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.
