Based on their leaked (probably scrapped) plans they felt the need to change the controller only after their competition was mopping the floor with them. Then they copy. Very uninspired.
They aren't innovating much either.
The new Xbox with the same UI (never been done before) and the controller now has a share button? A new box that's faster than the old one.
While Sony is innovating on controllers, design, sound, UI, and VR... I mean...at least try Xbox.
Agreed, and that's in line with how MS has operated since the early days. Part of what has made this console war so entertaining to watch is that David and Goliath contrast. Despite all the resources, MS still can't make good products and that's what is ultimately causing them to fail. And it will continue with the new studios they bought.
Steve Jobs summed it up so well and it still holds true: "They just have no taste."
At this point I think you're right. There has been the threat that MS might throw profit to the wind to brute force their way to the top by buying up the industry but you're right, that's not good competition. I wish they didn't go on a shopping spree and just focused on making their games and technology better.
I'm with you on steam box as well. Proton has come so far that it might actually be feasible soon. They gotta get the anti cheat companies on board first...
People get fired from executive level positions all the time. But Phil clearly knows how to BS, and he's speaking Satya's language. It takes a winner to spot a loser.
My point is more subtle - MS is looking for more revenue, The "every screen is an Xbox" is the tagline to represent that revenue drive. It's a push to get more customers. Darth is already a customer, he's not going anywhere. That's my only point. The "new screens" are Mobile, Switch, PS, the TVs on airplanes, whatever.
"Sony and xbox games going to each others consoles only benefits gamers."
I would say that's not necessarily true, but it's a long argument.
- Profits in console gaming is roughly zero sum - same # of gamers bouncing around with fixed $ to spend.. roughly
- Exclusives and hardware don't make the big profits. The Platform does, so you need gamers buying games through YOUR platform
- Some portion of the profits goes into designing the ne...
I mean it started with Phil saying only 4 and no strategy change, then followed by his leaders outlining what definitely looks like a strategy change. Mixed / confusing messaging for sure, so no need to criticize brains.
Time will tell. I've got my bets in, we'll see.
The PC isn't a competitor comment is interesting - how many people would jump to PC if more exclusives came out day 1 or whatever. Or how many people would drop the PC if more games were l...
@Lightening - "The big AAA games are staying"
I'm gonna give that statement a shelf life of a year, and I think that's generous
Sounds like you're already a satisfied and paying customer.
So, no, that doesn't count.
They mean other people that aren't customers yet.
"A future where every screen is an Xbox." - Phil Spencer
Either Target or MS has got to be taking a bath on that. Just the controller on sale is like $60 retail. So that leaves $160 for the console itself...
This is cheaper than the seven year old Switch.
Yeah, good deal. But bad sign.
"You begin to see that this is an old-fashioned business model, with an old-fashioned motive: money."
Money is "old-fashioned"? Someone hasn't moved out of their parent's basement yet...
Dude that next gen powerhouse they're imagining will be super powerful because it will be a PC with Xbox branding. They're barely selling XSX today, you think they're going to go all in again with R&D on bespoke chips and architecture to sell to an even smaller audience at a higher price? That's crazy. Slap an Xbox label on a slightly customized PC with OTC hardware and sell it for > $1K- that's a possibility. If you get ANYTHING in the high performance range it'...
Xbox has the smallest number of gamers and they don't seem to spend much on games. Not a lot of $ to be had there.
If Sony did do something like that, it would be very short sighted. Xbox's current state (as a console) is the weakest it's ever been. Putting nails in the coffin is the longer-term play.
No he's saying just because some rumors were not true you can't ignore that some actually were.
A big nothing burger filled with Xbox exclusives going over to PS.
If it were only 4 exclusives, it's still a big deal. Xbox (as a console) needs exclusives now more than ever. If they wanted to turn the ship around they'd be doubling down, not letting go.
And it's not only 4 - listen to Sarah and Matt go on about getting Xbox on "every screen" and playing everywhere.
Do you guys really think they'll stop after these 4 based on everything...
He's just playing the hero-victim to distract people from the fact that he's slowly dismantling Xbox to be full 3rd party like Satya and the CFO told him to do.
Helps the game devs too because Sony pays them the $ they would have gotten from Xbox gamers, which probably is not a heck of a lot.
So Sony pays 3rd parties way less than it would take to make their own 1st party game to keep putting nails in the Xbox coffin.
They're not compliments. Read between the lines lol
