seems there are some parts of the world that still aren't getting econ textbooks
@eon - i'm a fan of capitalism and don't want to debate ideology, but the announcement is calling out "fundamental change". Investors / capitalism / "greed" if you want to call it that - that hasn't changed - it's been around forever. Seems like he's referring to something else shifting...
Holy crap no... I'll take those narrative games any day of the week please
i mean, fair play to call it out - there was a lot of jumping to conclusions on the MS news for sure
To make matters worse there's a rumor going around that a Twisted Metal game was cancelled (probably theirs?)
To play that game in VR with a wheel, using cross play with non-VR players would have been amazing.
I'm not gonna cry about it, but... oh... crap.... alright, i guess i will a little :'-(
But the root cause in his memo "our industry has experienced continuing and fundamental change which affects how we all create, and play, games"
I just don't understand what that means. The changes that come to mind for me (GaaS and subscription models) seem self-inflicted and can be undone instead of embraced. I get that console isn't growing like crazy, but it's also not going away. That comment worries me because i just don't understand what has fundament...
Exclusives... The answer was exclusives.
But, you being the Oracle you already knew that, didn't you?
I mean... AA/AAA/LS all play a part in the exclusivity game, in proportion to their popularity with customers. Helldivers is just AA LS.
Fortnite is LS, can you imagine the impact of that was just on one platform? Sure AAA is bigger. But there will be some Sea of Thieves lovers out there that haven't pulled the trigger on a PS yet but now will. Small number I'm sure, but it adds up.
That's interesting. I would expect all of it to be fluid - like no rule of gonna be set in stone. I'm sure they want to get their brand out there in a positive light and make money in the process. Worst thing would be to have a company make a crappy game that drags a Marvel character down with it.
So if Sony studios can keep making great games, and they say sure, but like some small % of people won't be able to play it, dunno...
That being said, EA did well wit...
Click and gloat bait. Will we get Minecraft and Roblox articles next?
And to get you to pick one streaming service over another they would have....
If Xbox exits a market (consoles) to focus on another (games) I guess I don't care anymore. They lost the console market and pretty much the same companies that have been there before making games are still there flying a different flag. If they suck, other companies will eat their lunch by making better games.
I don't understand who u r saying won...
But I agree in that I wouldn't be surprised if Windows was part of the calculus for MS supporting Xbox. The OS was based on Windows at first and Xbox One kinda had two Windows instances if you count the hypervisor.
But, like the console space, I think MS is walking back on OS domination. Apple and Google completely ate their lunch because....surprise surprise they innovated. I'm 100% confident the reason Phil talks (and s...
The console war we've been watching for the last two decades has been what I find interesting. I don't really care how much profit MS can make by buying King and running Candy Crush any more than I care how much money they make bleeding businesses for MS Office licenses. That's boring. The fun thing to watch has been the work these companies have put in to try to win the console market.
@Gamer if you don't see it yet, there's nothing i can say to convince you.
What's kinda crazy to me is - if they retreat from consoles they're left with a business model that depends on making great games that people want to buy.
What has been Xbox's biggest issue over the last decade or so?
It's not like they're falling back to a strength...
Oh you're on Xbox. Sorry man.
If a pro really is coming out soon, maybe that explains why the studios have been so quiet... Because they've been working on Pro versions of all the already released games? I get that higher res and frame rate don't take a lot of effort, but that's not going to wow people watching a trailer over YouTube. Maybe they're like adding more detail or something
In a sense... It already is 😉
@obscure - GaaS is a choice, subscription models are a choice, so they can be undone because they are a choice.
Now to address the argument that GaaS ans subscription models are making money -
Helldivers 2's recent success doesn't undo Bungie's downfall along with the countless games that have failed chasing the F2P/GaaS model that Fortnite capitalized on. How much time and money were wasted trying to make TLOU2 factions or whatever more GaaS friendly.
