PSFocus writes: A new Yakuza, but a totally different one this time. Zombies made it to Tokyo and you have to take care of business. Right move to make a zombie shooter or not? Find out in our review.

I...just.... I just can't stop myself from wanting to buy it. I have heard that it's pretty much broken from many sources and I've seen the evidence in videos from late in the game when dozens of cheap enemies can easily back you into a corner and stomp you as you try to stand back up. I can tell it's not a 'good' game but dammit I want it.

As a lifelong zombie nerd with a Japan obsession I just don't think I can avoid buying this game. I did play the demo from the Japanese store (when it was called 'of the end') and I really enjoyed it for what it was. It reminded me in many ways of those super low budget but incredibly imaginative Japanese shlock movies like Machine girl or Tokyo gore police. In the back of my mind I know that I'm gonna regret buying this game when I'm grinding through hours of cheap enemies but I can't help it. So thanks sincerely to all the writers of the bad reviews this game is getting. I appreciate the warning but I shall not be heeding it.

While I'm not terribly far into the game yet (trying to get through some of my backlog before getting back to it), I'm having a ton of fun with Dead Souls. I can't really understand these reviews/reviewers and where they are coming from, but then I also couldn't agree with many of the Yakuza 3 and 4 reviews that lambasted the games for silly reasons. In fact I'm finding that many of these reviewers don't even know the basics about the game/series, such as knowing which character Kiryu is, how many games they've made, or even what the game(s) are about, making me wonder just how much they've played compared what they claim they have in order to base their reviews upon.

As I've mentioned many times in the past, the Yakuza series is a definite favorite of mine, so I might be a little bias toward them, but generally I feel like they've often been under-advertised and under-rated. And while Dead Souls may not be a traditional Yakuza title, it still retains a majority of the series' features (tons of mini-games, side missions/areas, a significant amount of dialogue/story/characters, etc). So I'd say that anyone who enjoyed the prior entries in the Yakuza series will at least have some good fun with this from what I can tell so far. You may even come to thoroughly enjoy it.

For the record, I thought Tokyo Gore Police was an awesome movie too. If you get the chance to check it out they even made a live-action movie off of the Yakuza series, called "Like a Dragon".

Thanks a ton for all the info.

Honestly it's not broken at all. I played through it and loved it, it's a side story and is just ridiculous and funny but yet they keep it serious as well. If your a fan of the series just buy it, it's got enough cool side content to make Yakuza fans want it even if you hate shooters.

Should RGG Studio Port Yakuza: Dead Souls, Ishin and Kenzan?

RGG Studio, the developers behind Yakuza and Judgment, have blown up recently, but should their older, obscure games be given a second chance?

Yes.Also the PSP games should be ported

Iltapalanyymi1295d ago

Absolutely, especially ishin and kenzan. I also played the kurohyou psp game that was translated recently and had a blast. Now i want more of it but sadly the 2nd one isnt translated. Maybe RGG studio could port it to some kind of HD collection? Would be cool

Iltapalanyymi1295d ago

The kurohyou 2 fan translation is coming january 7th!!

Yakuza Ishin and Kenzan should totally get a remaster/port for modern consoles with a western localization. Dead Souls I'm more on the fence. I had fun with that game. But it's undoubtedly far below the franchise standard.

GhostofHorizon1295d ago

There was an interview where they mentioned they are giving it a second thought just because Ghost of Tsushima did so well, previously they were not convinced those games would find an audience in the west.

Personally I would love it if they ported these over.

Do Not Sleep On Yakuza: Dead Souls

Yeah, Yakuza: Dead Souls is very loud and very dumb, but sometimes that's exactly what you really need.

It's the best zombie game I played with a very mutual serious tone story that does not take itself to a serious if that makes sense

I highly recommend you play this game I just wish they would update the controls because the controls are just kind of weird. But you get used to it after a few hours

REALAS1827d ago

Very fun game. I would love a sequel. The first person controls were hard at first, but once you learn the trick to quick aim, its cake. Another overlooked classic.

DxTrixterz1827d ago (Edited 1827d ago )

Get to the Top sang by Majima is alone a reason to play this hidden gem.

This game was garbage, no I’m not talking about the story or whatever I mean the core gameplay it was absolute rubbish.

neocores80552518d ago

snake-OO2518d ago

In time....I remember back in mid 2000's the ps2 emulator hardly ran anything, and now it runs 90% of the games.
