This might sound silly, but you might not be using your device to its full potential. Recently, the members of the Steam Deck community on Reddit reminded their fellow players not to forget to use the back buttons. They shared their best ideas.
Back Buttons Could Improve Your Experience
One player, AlwaysBlue86, started the entire conversation by sharing their recent revelation. This player made some changes that immensely improved their experience, and, who knows, maybe they could do the same for you.
The OP noted: “Map L1 and R1 bumpers to L4 and L5, then map the stick clicks to L5 and R5 back buttons. I can’t believe it took me a couple of months to work out a use for those buttons! Before switching, I had to operate both the bumper and the trigger with one index finger. Now my index never leaves the trigger, and my middle finger operates the bumper using L4 and R4”.
The player explained how the stick clicks never felt good before this change. So, if you just feel like something isn’t right, or they’re uncomfortable to use, you could always try out this idea yourself.
Steam Deck Users Share Their Favorite Tips
Other Steam Deck users gladly agreed that back buttons should be used. Some even contributed their own ideas, and, honestly, we’ll have to try some of these out, as they are quite promising.
Kaliniaczek raved: “Back buttons are a game changer for racing games, I use it for gear up and down. Also, I used them as a sprint button instead of an analog stick in action games”.
BieverWeeber added: “I also use it as keyboard shortcuts or extra stuff for games. The most slept feature of the deck to me is that all buttons don’t have to be controller buttons. The back buttons don’t have to be another controller button. I have my HUD menu for ACC and other racing games as R5 and L5 (Q and W)”.
Finally, if you find the buttons uncomfortable, several players offered the same easy solution. One of them suggested: “Another awesome thing is adding back button extenders. My hands are pretty big but these helped with my comfort amazingly well”.
So, have you already tried any of these tips? If so, how do you like them? If you haven’t we’d suggest you try them out. After all, if it isn’t for you, you can easily switch back to your preferred setup. We hear that Hades 2 and Diablo IV are quite popular lately, give them a try if you haven’t. Also, the entire Fallout series is on a huge sale, and if you have a Prime membership, BioShock is free. Enjoy!
