Steam is one of the biggest platforms for gaming and it currently has over 100 million active users. With so many users the platform must experience some problems and issues from time to time. The Steam Disk Write error is one such occurrence. Moreover, this error usually happens when you are installing or updating a game. This means that Steam was not able to write on the disk, which can be caused by different issues. Luckily there are ways you can try to fix this error and hopefully return to gaming quickly.
How to fix the Disk Write Error on Steam
While encountering errors is never a pleasant thing, you should not panic. Additionally, these things happen and you are not alone in experiencing them. Besides being a nuisance, Disk Write errors can be fixed rather quickly and easily. Try the following fixes to resolve the Disk Write error on Steam.
Restart your PC
Sometimes simply restarting your computer can solve issues like this. Alternatively, you can try to only restart Steam, but we recommend restarting the entire system. This will close all applications that are running at the moment and some of them might be interfering with Steam.
Disk Write Permission
There is a possibility that your Steam Library folder has read-only permission, preventing any files from being added to it.
- Locate the Steam folder on your PC, usually located in Program Files.
- Right-click on the Steam folded to select Properties.
- In the General tab near the bottom, find Attributes. Check if the Read-only attribute is selected, and if it is, turn it Off.
- Click on Apply to save this change.

Change Steam Download Server
Disk Write errors can be caused by Steam Download Servers experiencing problems on their end. To fix this you will have to change your download server region.
- Run the Steam app, click on Steam in the top left corner and enter Settings.
- Go to the Downloads tab and on top, you will see the Download region option.
- Select a different server location, we recommend one close to your automatically assigned region.
Clear Steam Download Cache
The Steam Cache holds temporary files that allow Steam to perform certain tasks faster. However, it can become corrupted in some rare instances. This can in turn lead to a Disk Write error. For that reason, clearing the Cache folder from time to time is a good idea.
- Run Steam, click on Steam in the top left corner and enter Settings.
- Go to the Downloads tab and locate Clear Download Cache.
- Click on Clear Download Cache, and then confirm this action for Steam to delete the Download Cache and restart.
Repair Steam Libray Folder
In addition to cleaning your Download Cache, you can try repairing your Steam Library as well. This can fix the Disk Write error and will keep Steam running smoothly.
- Run Steam, click on Steam in the top left corner and enter Settings.
- There go to the Downloads tab and locate Storage.
- Click on “…” and select Repair Library. This might take some time depending on the number of installed games.
