Is Diablo 4 Set Before Diablo 3?
The simple answer is that Diablo 4 is not a prequel to Diablo 3. The latest entry in the series is not set before any of the previous Diablo games, and is a sequel that continues the story of the franchise. None of the numbered Diablo titles have been prequels that simply filled in the story between games.
The only prequel in the franchise was the recently released Diablo Immortal in 2022. The free-to-play dungeon crawler for PC and mobile devices took place between the events of Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction and Diablo 3.
What Is the Story of Diablo 4?
Diablo 4 takes place 50 years after the events of Diablo III: Reaper of Souls, where the battles between Heaven and Hell have wasted millions of lives. Lilith, the daughter of Mephisto, has been summoned to make the world dark and hopeless.
Players will be chasing Lilith across Sanctuary before she can accomplish her goal of complete domination. There are also Altars of Lilith, statues that honor her, littered across Sanctuary that will give players stat bonuses. While the story of Diablo 4 has not been revealed yet, players will see if Lilith is defeated at the end of the game or will appear in the game’s upcoming expansions.
