Wondering how to save the game in Hogwarts Legacy? No problem. We’ll cover each step in the process to help you log your progress in the story.
Hogwarts Legacy is one of the biggest game releases of the year, and it’s finally available to play across PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. The title from WB Games features a host of content for Wizarding World fans to explore when they enroll as a student at Hogwarts. From choosing your wand to facing down Trolls and mastering Ancient Magic, there’s a lot of ground to cover on your playthrough. That said, you’ll want to log the progress you make in the story. Fortunately, Hogwarts Legacy features both autosave and manual save options. Here’s how to use them.
How to Save Your Progress in Hogwarts Legacy
From the start of your Hogwarts Legacy playthrough, save functions are readily available. The autosave feature will kick in on its own following cutscenes, events, and encounters. Monitor the bottom of your screen for a waving wand icon, which indicates an active autosave.
To make sure the autosave feature is enabled, from the game menu go to Settings and then to Gameplay. There look for Save and in it check if the AutoSave option is turned on.
Apart from this, you also have the option to log your progress manually. This comes in handy, as the autosave feature may not activate exactly when you’d like.
To log a manual save in Hogwarts Legacy, follow these steps, as pictured above.
- Open the Main Menu.
- Go to Settings at the bottom-right of the action wheel.
- From there, choose the Save Game directive.
- Select the save slot you’d like to use. To overwrite a current save, choose the top slot. If you want to create a separate save to switch between slots later on, choose an empty slot.
- Depending on your platform, saving requires a long press. Wait for the white ring to make a complete circle to fully log your progress. Your save will fail if you release the control before the ring is complete.

When Should You Save the Game in Hogwarts Legacy?
While the autosave feature is a great fail-safe in the event that your game closes or you’re otherwise disconnected, you’ll still want to log your progress manually from time to time. This can make up for the moments in which autosave isn’t active. To keep your progress safe, I recommend saving your game during lengthy quests and prior to entering boss battles.
Many of the main quests in the game span several steps to complete. Although, some are more difficult than others. If you don’t want to start from square one in the event that you fail on your first try, logging a manual save can allow you to pick up from an earlier save point.
In the same vein, boss battles can be exceptionally tough to handle in one fell swoop. I had some trouble with Pensieve Guardians throughout my own playthrough, so I made sure to log my progress before I entered each fight. Same goes for Trolls and the Infamous Foes. Depending on your selected difficulty, manual logs can be a lifesaver.
