Wondering how to catch a Thestral in Hogwarts Legacy? Stick around. We’ll cover everything you need to know about these magical beasts, including where you can find them and how to catch one with ease.
One thing you’ll learn as soon as you start playing Hogwarts Legacy is that there are several different species of beasts that can be captured and placed in a Vivarium. One such creature is the magnificent and ominous Thestral. While this beast is particularly sought-after, it’s not easy to find or tame. Luckily, you’ve found just the place to learn all you need to know about Thestrals. Keep on reading to learn more about these beasts, from where to find them to how to add one to your Vivarium.
Where to Find Thestrals in Hogwarts Legacy
Thestrals are rare magical creatures and, thus very difficult to find. In fact, there are only two creature dens where you can find Thestrals in the whole of Hogwarts Legacy.
One of these dens is located quite close to Hogwarts Castle. This is in the North Ford Bog, where you will be led to capture your very first Thestral. You’ll find the den marked on your map, as pictured above. A side quest entitled Foal of the Dead will require you to catch and breed two of these rare beasts in this location. There are also a lot of Merlin Trials to take on in this area, so you’ll likely spend a lot of time here.
The other Thestral den is located on the Marunweem Lake. You can find this den quite far down south on the map, though it’s not easy to reach until the late game. That said, these are the only two locations where you’ll have a chance of coming across a Thestral, so I recommend focusing on reaching the first, as it’s accessible from earlier on.
How to Capture a Thestral in Hogwarts Legacy
First of all, you need to make sure the Thestral doesn’t see you coming as this could startle it and cause it to fly away. Keeping the Thestral grounded is essential. For this, you should use a Disillusionment spell.
The next step will be to immobilize the creature. This is vital or else the beast will fly away as soon as it suspects anything. To immobilize it, you should use spells such as Arresto Momentum, Accio, Glacius or Levioso. The latter two will lend you the best chances, as their effects can be amplified with skills. I had the best luck with Glacius, the freezing spell.
Once the Thesral you have is immobilized and unable to move, all you have to do is use the Nab-Sack by the five button prompts on the animal. After this, what you have to do is take it and release it into a vivarium of your liking. The Swamp Vivarium will be unlocked in line with the active quest, so this will make a great home for the night-dwelling beast. From there, you can tame and train your Thestral.
To breed an offspring, you’ll have to capture two Thestrals in total, including a male and a female. This is a requirement to complete the Foal of the Dead quest. With a set of potential parents, you will be able to breed your own Thestral at the breeding pen within the Vivarium.

What is a Thestral in Hogwarts Legacy?
Thestrals are a breed or species derived from horses, so to say. They can be described as large, gloomy, winged beasts that appear very terrifying to see. However, only those who have witnessed death can see a Thestral.
As such, they are notoriously fearsome creatures, and may often be considered a bad omen or bad luck. However, they are also amongst some of the most intelligent and loyal as well as highly rare creatures within the game. So having a Thestral on your side can always come in handy.
