Helldivers 2 Community Split Over Another Potential Sony Controversy

All Helldivers 2 veterans remember the Sony controversy back in April when thousands of players were locked out of the game. The developers promised they’d try and fix the problem, as well as give the review-bomb cape to players. Unfortunately, neither did the problem get solved, nor did the players receive the cape. Now, Sony is in hot water yet again, because they updated the EULA terms.

What did Sony Do Now?

First of all, EULA, or the End-User Licence Agreement is basically a contract between a software producer and the user. You’ve probably agreed to hundreds of these without reading through the terms or giving it a second thought. However, due to Helldivers not trusting Sony, this update to the terms quickly escalated.

On October 3, some players received a message upon starting the game. It stated: “Please read this agreement in its entirety. You must agree to the terms of the EULA to play Helldivers 2”. Underneath this message, there was a link to the terms, as well as the Accept and Cancel buttons.

Now, it’s important to note that not everyone received this message (we haven’t, yet), as the terms depend on the country/region you live in. You can check when the terms were last updated on this link (it will redirect you based on your location).

Also, we’d like to remind you that we are in no way lawyers, and this article shouldn’t be taken as legal advice. We’re just trying our best to break down a very complicated situation, so you can have an idea of what the fuss is all about.

According to players, the biggest changes were made to Article 1 and Article 9. Article 1 basically states that you don’t own the game, but it is rather licensed to you. Article 9 is a bit more complicated as it delves into details of arbitration, and according to some: “Sony is making it very difficult and pointless to take legal action against them”.

Helldivers 2 Players Unsure Whether the Changes Are Controversial

Some Helldivers 2 players were more than ready to dub this situation another Sony controversy. However, many others pointed out that these were quite standard changes, and these terms existed in every other game.

One player, helicophell, noted: “It’s just the EULA, nothing special. Read through some of it, normal stuff. Don’t do piracy, you own a license, not the game itself, don’t be a toxic s**tbag… wait a moment”. Bleach209 added: “Honestly this is standard, even Microsoft Office is the same you don’t own it”.

Keinulive explained: “Games now require the product to say the games you got is either yours or just “licensing” it. This isn’t some new EULA, it’s just them NEEDING to mention it now cuz of a law that was recently passed. It sucks that you finally find out about it but with the new law at least you know that what you purchase isn’t really yours to begin with”.

So, do you think this situation deserves to be dubbed as controversial? We can’t say for sure, as some of the disclosed details truly were sobering, but isn’t this kind of transparency actually a good thing? Hopefully, the situation won’t escalate any further, as the players are finally happy with the state of the game. For Liberty and Super Earth.
