There is no greater source of frustration than when a CS2 game crashes during the match, especially if you were in the middle of an intense firefight. Along with being unpleasant, this can ruin your gaming performance and can lead to a competitive cooldown. Sadly this is something that used to happen in the previous iterations of the game and CS2 just continues the trend. Luckily, you can take steps to fix CS2 crashing during a match and hopefully return to undisturbed gaming.

How to fix CS2 crashing mid-game

If you have experienced CS2 crashing during a match, you are not alone. This is a problem CS2 inherited from its predecessor, and there can be many causes for this. Let’s take a look at the steps you can take to resolve this issue.

Check System Requirements

The cause for CS2 crashing mid-game can be that your PC does not meet the minimum or recommended system requirements. A powerful PC is needed to run CS2 smoothly on a high setting. Making sure that your PC meets CS2 System Requirements is a good place to start. Additionally, if you are running the game on minimum requirements, adjust your in-game settings to ‘Low’ to get better performance.

Update Video Drivers

Outdated video drivers are known to cause CS2 to crash during a match. Make sure that your graphics drivers are up to date. The latest drivers can be found on the official site of the manufacturer of your graphics card. Simply go to the site for NVIDIA or AMD and locate drivers for your specific card.

Verify Game Files

Due to corrupt or missing files, you can experience crashes mid-game in CS2. This can happen after an update, due to disk errors, or malware infections. Follow the steps below to use the Steam client to verify your CS2 game files.

  • Locate CS2 in your Library on Steam.
  • Right-click on the game and access Properties.
  • In the Installed Files tab click on Verify Integrity of Game Files

Keep in mind that it will take Steam a couple of minutes to scan all the files and re-download any missing or corrupt ones. After that, try launching CS2 again to see if the error has been fixed.

Disable Background Programs

Programs that are running in the background while you are playing CS2 can be the cause of mid-game crashes. Every active program on a PC consumes system resources, and this can trigger anti-cheat or cause other problems. Make sure that you close any unnecessary programs while playing the game. Additionally, if you want to be sure that nothing is running in the background, restarting your PC will end all active programs.
