How to Free Nightsong in Baldur’s Gate 3

Baldur’s Gate 3 Companions stood around main player

As you progress through Baldur’s Gate 3, the quests continuously get more complex, and each action weighs heavily on how your story plays out. The same is the case with your interaction with Nightsong as it shapes the end of Act 2 and much of Act 3. Other than this, what you decide to do with this particular character also changes the fates of some characters in your party. If you want to free Nightsong and follow that path, here’s how to do it.

How to Save Nightsong in Baldur’s Gate 3

Once you reach Nightsong after defeating Balthazar, you will be presented with two options on what to do with Nightsong; select the one that saves the Nightsong. After this, you must persuade Shadowheart to spare the Nightsong’s life and let her live. You’ll need to pass a persuasion check for this. If you succeed, Shadowheart will spare the Nightsong, and she will be free.

The vital thing to note here is that you have three different storylines, all of which have different outcomes. The first two, killing or saving the Nightsong, decide her fate and whether she will be present in future endeavors. This also impacts the fate of Shadowheart since killing or giving the Nightsong to Balthazar will cause her to leave your party permanently.

Once you decide to save the Nightsong, the next part is convincing Shadowheart to not kill her (again). Depending on if you can pass the Persuasion check, Shadowheart’s attitude will change drastically. If she proceeds with killing the Nightsong, Shadowheart will become possessed by Shar and gain some armor. If she frees the Nightsong, she receives the Moonlight Glaive.

How to Find Nightsong

We’ve talked a lot about freeing Nightsong, but the Find the Nightsong quest isn’t easy to begin with. It takes you through several different locations and is a really long quest, spanning almost two acts. We’ll try to sum it up for you so you don’t get confused.

Act 1

You’ll receive the Find the Nightsong quest in Act 1 from Liam in Druid’s Grove. He’ll tell you there’s a wizard in Baldur’s Gate who will pay a hefty amount to anyone who can bring him the Nightsong. You then travel to the Goblin Camp, where you must defeat Princess Gut. This will allow you to venture deeper into the Defiled Ruins, the place where the Nightsong is held.

After this, you’ll need to solve a few puzzles by rotating pieces of a symbol in order to get the correct symbol. Solving the puzzle will grant you access to the Underdark, a large underground passageway that takes you to the Grymforge.

Act 2

From here, the story takes you to Last Light Inn. Go south to find Thorm Mausoleum. Keep traveling deeper until you get to the Gauntlet of Shar. By solving the final puzzles, you can unlock the area where the Nightsong is kept.

What Happens if the Nightsong is Killed?

If you decide to go with the other option and kill the Nightsong, there are two possibilities. You can kill the Nightsong yourself, causing Shadowheart to leave your party permanently. Otherwise, you can let Shadowheart kill the Nightsong, causing her to fulfill her duty to the goddess, Shar. Shar possesses her and gives her an exalted set of Dark Justicar Armor and Shar’s Spear of Evening.
