Will Destiny be the next big eSport?

Bungie have history with Halo but may find it tough to entice pro players with its new shooter.

EvilWay3533d ago

No.

Multiplayer is not really balanced or compelling enough for competitive play. From what I played the multiplayer was extremely boring and also very easy. I dropped 30 kills in my first game, it is like there is no learning curve, just hop in and play. Halo was so successful because it is extremely balanced, and had maps built for competitive play.

Destiny's biggest problem is that everyone has different grade weapons and armor even if they are the same level so it kind of ruins balance because someone will always have better equipment than you. Also, the game seems to be more about the single player/coop than competitive multiplayer

People compare it to Halo and I don't see it tbh, I feel it is closer to Cod with jetpacks and powers than Halo.

While I agree that Destiny wont make for a good eSport game, because of its lack of balance, i've never understood the idea that a pvp multiplayer game can be 'easy'.

If it was easy for you, and you were racking up 30 kills, then it must have been hard for your opponents, right? Isn't the difficulty of the game determined by the skill of the people you are playing against?

EvilWay3533d ago

I guess to a point. I am eager to see the game modes they implement in and how they work.

Army_of_Darkness3532d ago

I personally don't really care for it, but I'm gonna assume it will be the next big thing mainly because Destiny doesn't have much competition this year and will be seen all over the world with ads just being tossed in our faces constantly.

mikeslemonade3532d ago

It's the next AAA game you play for about a week or two. Then you will move on to the next AAA game. That's the way a core gamer plays.

nX3532d ago

There will certainly not be any major eSports tournaments with Destiny for obvious reasons but it will be my main competitive shooter this year and I'm fine with that :)

It could be balanced, besides COD's up there so just saying that its not balanced isn't really that big of an issue with a right amount of developer support, Hell Halo 4 was unbalanced as hell and it still got some competitive tourneys. Since all weapon damage is balanced out to a certain extent already in the basic PVP. Its in the Iron banner where the damage of your weapon really matters but i know theirs other issues as well.

There was a learning curve I had a group of friends me and 2 others were doing exceptionally well while the other 3 were slacking heavily. I myself have come across players who were just better than me at placing shots. Just because you got 30 plus kills the first games doesn't mean that every single other human being is going to do the same unless your like some sort of designated gamer with the title of least skilled on the planet or something.

EvilWay3532d ago

@army

Idk about no competition, it has Halo MC and Cod to go up against. which imo are both vastly better competitive multiplayer games

Dynasty20213532d ago (Edited 3532d ago )

No.

They're pretty much reserved for PC games - Starcraft 1 and 2, Counter Strike, League of Legends etc.

These are the biggest games in the world, bar none. Have the highest sales and most people watching them. End of story.

"Oh but X game on console sold" just shut up.

"Well CoD does it."

Err, CoD was PC first.

nX3532d ago

Thanks for pointing that out, we didn't know that.

qwerty6763532d ago

why is this even being considered?

of course it isn't, very stupid article.

Meltic3532d ago (Edited 3532d ago )

storymode Hell no !. Multiplayer mode hell yes. Cant wait too play with my father. He's choosing hunter and i Titan :). Can't wait until me and him having some fun. He's working all the time no time for the family, and next week he's vacation is starting, play time.

Destiny Made Over $160 Million In Microtransaction Revenue In Less Than 2 Years

Destiny has made over $160 million in MTX revenue, and these numbers only account the data from late 2017 to early 2019.

Sgt_Slaughter342d ago

That's extremely low for microtransactions, especially for a game that's essentially designed around it

LucasRuinedChildhood342d ago (Edited 342d ago )

This was back when the game wasn't free to play.

The figures are from November 2017 to February 2019 (1 year and 4 months).

Based on that projection, the MTX revenue for Destiny 2 likely would have been closer to ~$240m for 2 years.

Not sure if premium expansions are included in that figure either although ... I'd hope that they are though and that most of the revenue was for actual content like Forsaken.

People spend way too much money on cosmetics.

Rude-ro342d ago (Edited 342d ago )

Seasons($10 and just got bumped to $12) and dungeon keys($10 each, two a year) are through the eververse(micro transaction) store.
So for those two years, in order to play a season, you would pay through micro transactions.

Sonic1881342d ago (Edited 342d ago )

Bungie Marathon will be worse since it's designed around it as well

Kurt Russell341d ago

It makes me sad to agree... but at the same time I am looking forward to giving it a go. Destiny 2 is so far in, I find it difficult to figure out what I am meant to do first.

buffig342d ago

I think FIFA alone makes over $1bn a year from mtx

anast342d ago

FIFA promotes a worldwide sport. It should make more money than destiny.

CantThinkOfAUsername342d ago (Edited 342d ago )

Let's compare something similar. Apex Legends and its ridiculous $18/$40 skins make EA a billion each year.

z2g342d ago

For as much as ppl complain how much they hate microtransactions, they sure don’t act like it. No wonder they aren’t going anywhere.

spicelicka342d ago

By "people" you're referring to millions and millions of people. Obviously the ones complaining aren't necessarily the same as the ones spending all that money.

There's millions that purchase MTX and there's nothing we can do about it

I've been thinking about playing through D1 again before it goes away...

CobraKai493d ago

That’s the sad reality of a game like this. I bought it, invested lots of money, and it can go away at anytime. I still think this was more fun than 2.

jeromeface492d ago

prob because 2 is a grindfest slog

spoonard489d ago

That's the bummer of 'games as a service'.
