If you take the software in Japan into account…It looks like GTA5 on the PS4 was a large reason why PS4 hardware sales jumped in Japan. GTA 5 is the biggest selling PS4 title for the week in Japan (the only PS4 title to make the top 20 list) and it is a new release over there.

You're not far off.
68,041 is roughly 426% of 15,971, but that doesn't mean that the sales increased by 426%. It means that the sales are now 426% of what they were.

EDIT: To illustrate, 100% of 10 is 10. That doesn't mean that your sales increased by a 100% if you sold 10 apples one month and 10 the next.

I cannot speak for all the public but I can tell you about myself and my friends who have been playing games for almost two decades. Generally, it is believed that console gaming has been ruined by the rise of the western gaming industry. Console gaming is now dominated by western games and a few genres such as FPS, TPS and Action. Moreover, it is as if games have lost their soul. There are no more great, emotional or romantic stories to be told. There are no more iconic heroes and villains. There are no more memorable and beautiful soundtracks. It is all about the adrenaline rush that comes from multiplayer and action nowadays. As a result, gamers have moved to the handhelds which are still dominated by Japanese games and still offer games reminiscent of the old days. I still remember the emotions I felt as a teeanger when "Eye on me" played in FFVIII, Id's true identity was revealed in Xenogears, played Chrono Trigger for the first time and listened to Chrono Cross/Xenogear soundtrack for first time. Some gamers like me have adjusted to the new gaming industry while fondly remembering the old days while others have resisted and instead moved to handhelds to experience games with that distinct Asian flavor consisting of story, characters, virtue, friendship and emotions. You know all the stuff considered cheesy, emo and corny in the west.

Very well explained Griever, you put everything into perspective very well. But at the same time, I don't think that Japanese (developers) are what they used to be either. They were the greats, the gaints back in the 8bit through 32bit era. But since last gen have fallen behind imo. Games like Bloodborn are a good step in the right direction for them, but they got a lot more to do. Most of their games seem to be stuck a gen behind (to me). Don't take any of this as me knocking them, but just calling it like I see it.

Gaming hasn't been ruined by the west like you think. Add a couple decades to your experience and you will see it is simply evolving. The single player experience has been replaced with a connected experience. Instead of relying on a good story to keep us playing we also have our friends.

The West is dominating games because the East quit making them. When they do make them, they aren't porting them which is a shame. I would love to see a Phantasy Star released Stateside. Unfortunately Sega doesn't feel the need to do it. How can eastern games make a come back if they never leave the region?

Wow. And some delusional fanboys honestly think the Xbox One is going to come out on top this generation? It was outsold by 60'000 units.
In some parts of Europe, the gap is 6:1 in PS4's favour. The only way they were able to win 1 month in the US was basically by giving away the console.
This is going to be a long generation for MS. That's not even taking into account the fact that Sony has next year locked down in terms of exclusives.

PS4 sold a lot more than Vita this week. That's all Sony has been wanting it to do. They could have got Square to release Dragon Quest Heroes on Vita too and do a similar bundle like with PS4, but they didn't. In fact, Vita has had 0 proper limited edition bundles in Japan this year despite many games deserving one.

Next week Vita will be down year-over-year, and it'll end 2014 selling less than it did in 2013 despite a better start. 2015 is going to be miserable for it. I can see 2015 being Vita's final year.

With all games like Digimon Cyber Sleuth, Super Robot Wars Z Tengoku, SAO: Lost Song, RE Revelations 2, Ys 8, One Piece Musou 3, new Saga, God Eater 2: Rage Burst, Senran Kagura: Estival Versus, Samurai Warriors 4-II, and many more? If people don't own a PS4 and want to play Dragon Quest Heroes, why would they not buy the console now (it includes a voucher for the game - it just doesn't go live until release)? If anything, this bundle will only make DQH's launch week have less of an effect on hardware sales.

@wodan I don't see how that comment about DQH on Vita deserves an "lol." The game is developed by Koei Tecmo on the Dynasty Warriors engine for PS4 and PS3. They've released many PS4/PS3/PSV games. It's not like Square Enix is against putting stuff out of Vita either. They just announced a new SaGa game exclusive to it this week.

Dragon Quest Heroes is and will move hardware. I never said it hasn't/won't. I'm just saying this strategy has its pros and cons. The pro being the obvious that you expand your userbase. The con being that it will influence how DQH's numbers are reported. As I said earlier, the DQH bundle actually includes the game, you just can't play it until it comes out. If you had the money and were interested in buying a PS4 plus a copy of the game, why wouldn't you buy it now?

I laugh at people jumping to conclusion involving PlayStation 4.

First of all, this is just one week and that does not mean that just because one week in which sold 68K. Wait for a week or two to properly see if this is a trend or a fluke...

This week Dragon Quest Heroes Limited Edition PlayStation 4 was released which was of interest for Japanese audience, while Grand Theft Auto 5 got released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox 360 audience needs to go somewhere since apparently they aren't buying Xbox One.

Most Xbox 360 buyers of course were foreigners or in Japanese "Gaijin's", GTA 5 primarily spur interest of foreign western gamers.

PlayStation 4's spike was due to a bundle and a big release.

While Wii U is not performing that well this hoiliday since its main competitor arrived, that does not mean its in danger as Nintendo said that they "could" price cut Wii U in March though they could in February.

If Nintendo does a priced cut, it will spur sales and there will be at least one major game for Wii U a month.

Sony on other hand can't afford a price cut due to their financial troubles as they need every cent to stay afloat.

Also PlayStation 4 is not a Japanese console by design and its power consumption is high, Wii U is more fitting than PlayStation 4 will for will be for a Japanese audience though some of you people will be in denial about an obvious fact.

Lets see what next week and week after that on how PlayStation 4 performs. Keep it real...

And your reading too much into it. This simply shows that there is potential for growth for the PS4 in Japan. It has nothing to do with the Wii U, really , or Sony's financial position. Nintendo and Sony cater to different audiences in the console market. Just like last generation they can both do well in Japan without impacting the other's success. It's not as "PS4 vs. Wii U" as you make it. They are both fighting to bring the Japanese console market back to relevancy.
I agree though, that people should wait to see how this boost holds throughout the holiday. I doubt it will, limited edition consoles don't raise the baseline. Software does.

Oh and how does the power consumption of a Sony product discredit it origin?

I am not making out to be "PS4 vs Wii U" if you have payed attention, look at forums around the web and how people act even in here...

PlayStation 4's size and power consumption matters, standards in Japan changed from 90's, early to mid 2000's and you know how a lot of Japanese people live in small appartment and space is very valuable in Japan.

Look at how large is Japan's territory and now squeeze 130 million people yet whole USA has far bigger territory and only 300-400 million people. Even Europoe can't beat that density with 500 million people in it.

If PlayStation 4 was a Japanese console it would have been smaller and less power hungry to have a lesser impact on eletric bills as standards changed radically since mikd 2000's...

And consumers/gamers in Japan are satisfied with visuals of 3DS/Vita and PS3/Xbox 360/Wii...

Notice the difference in response between Sony's actions of a poor selling PS4 in Japan vs. their actions with a poor selling Vita in the west. They ignore Vita in the west and let it die, while in Japan they pushed PS4 to the detriment of Vita.
