It’s time to look back on this year for each individual console and evaluate the success or failure of said platform. We’ve got some colorful things to say about all the consoles and unlike your typical gaming commentator or writer, we're not going easy on these consoles because really, each console has one major bug bear, ignoring the fact that 2014 was a bad year in general. Before you comment saying we’m being overly harsh, wait for the articles on the other consoles to come out before you comment. Let’s start with the most obvious choice, the PS4, the first next generation console we bought this year.
Codemasters has unveiled a series of massive changes to the Career Mode in F1 24. Players will finally be able to play as a current superstar.
Bandai Namco have announced a console and PC game of the Tensura series - that of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime ISEKAI Chronicles.
Wrath: Aeon of Ruin has come about via some old classical inspiration. If you liked Quake, DOOM, Hexen or the like, then you're going to love this as it blasts onto Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch.
Their closing statement for the PS4:
The problem is that PCs do exist and are getting cheaper and more accessible than ever. Right now, there’s not really any reason to own a PS4 and even though it’s a good console and it terms of popularity and marketing, is a monumental success, I just don’t think it had a great year in 2014 and that’s all because there weren’t any exclusive games worth buying the system for. You can argue with me all you want, but when you can count on one fucking hand the number of new triple-A exclusives released in one year, that means something is wrong.
Their closing statement for the XB1:
The problem is that the Xbox One is just terrible to use outside of playing a game, despite idiots on YouTube claiming the UI is so intuitive. You can see the remnants of the original plan for the Xbox One in this console and it hinders the platform noticeably. Microsoft did turn around the Xbox One this year and turned it into a viable console, but I still feel it’s the weakest of the three and Microsoft still have a lot to do before the Xbox One can really reach its potential.
I had no idea that you couldn't buy a PC to match the XB1 too. It's the weakest of the three but for some reason they think there's no reason to own a PS4. That's a rather odd conclusion.
"You can argue with me all you want, but when you can count on one fucking hand the number of new triple-A exclusives released in one year, that means something is wrong."
Terrible conclusion.
NOTHING is wrong with that. What it means is that PS4 is performing just like every other PlayStation console in the history of this industry in terms of the year one software lineup. Only people invested in comparisons are the ones bringing it up. Only the ones bitter that PS4 is stomping the competition with a supposedly "worse" lineup, are bringing it up. Only the ones without any kind of perspective of how Sony traditionally goes about game production are bringing it up.
PS4 has still had more AAA exclusives in 2014, proof as provided by GribbleGrunger. It's very easy to come out with these comparisons, but it's also very easy to ignore that Sony were producing heavily for PS3, whilst their PS4 was also in production, and the other console makers weren't doing.
The PS4 has more games in every single category, indie or AAA.
The PS4 also has better Metacritic scores. Look it up.
The PS4 has 2 AAA-rated exclusives, and the Xbone has had NONE.
When was the last console that had a great first year in terms of AAA exclusives? Whatever this argument will be obsolete once bloodborne comes out lol.
@kingdomtriggers PlayStation 2. It's first year was full of AAA exclusives both 1st and 3rd party.
Next year however is when ps4 really gets the engines running in full gear.
Xbox better watch out. Not to mention ps4 has done all this without a price drop. With much more cost effective parts that went into ps4's development, on top of Sony already making a small profit on each system sold, I expect a price drop of $50-$100, just in time for all the big heavy hitters for next year.
Tbh, I'd have been quite happy if current gen was releasing this holiday season with all years worth of games at launch. I've just upgraded to ps4, been very happy holding back enjoying refined games on ps3. 2015 however, will be where current gen really kicks off!
