A year in, how’s the console war going?

It’s been a year since the release of the “next-gen” consoles. So, how’re they holding up? Were they just a let-down? Or have we really seen the next generation of gaming?

It is articles like this which piss me off. There is no console war beyond the fanboys. Stop perpetuating it.

Untrue. The console war didn't start with fanboys, and it's not perpetuated by fanboys, either. They don't run the show, they just play their parts.

To be sure, corporate participation- such as what we saw back in the late 80s and early 90s- has toned down quite a bit. In their place, though, we've got plenty of journalists rallying the troops.

The console war, even by that name, isn't new. And while it does frequently devolve into stupidity, at it's core it's just a competition between rival brands. And it exists everywhere.

Do people NOT notice how automakers go after their competition in commercials? Do they not visit auto forums and see the same things going on there that happen here?

Folks are getting way too sensitive about it being called a "war." It's a loan word for competition in various markets. Competition is a war.

Whilst I agree with parts of what you said I can't help but feel your attitude contributes greatly to the overall image people who play games have. This war is ridiculous. It was ridiculous when fought over SNES and Megadrive. It is even more ridiculous now.
