Pffft wireless.

Am I the only one that designs the whole interior of my house around achieving optimal gaming and movie conditions?

choujij3530d ago (Edited 3530d ago )

No, I do too. But that doesn't stop me from using a NightHawk. It's a fantastic router with a lot of features.

I use the Nighthawk too. Love it! I only hardwire my Xbox One and PC though. Everything else doesn't have a giga ethernet connections, so they get wifi.

choujij3530d ago (Edited 3530d ago )

@Wikkid666

There's less latency and more consistency over a hardwired Ethernet connection than WiFi, regardless if a device's connection speed is 1000mbps or 100mbps. So you would always want to use a hardwired connection whenever possible.

I with you Volkama,

As an IT professional, I prefer to have everything optimal. I have every room wired with cat6 cable (2 drops in most rooms). I use an old dual-core (2GB RAM) HP mini desktop, with pfSense 2.1.4 as my router. It has the best performance & security, than any consumer router on the market. I also use an Asus N66U router as an wireless Access Point only, which takes away the overhead of NAT/DHCP/VPN etc., so laptops/cell phones/tablets can have the fastest connection possible.

choujij3530d ago (Edited 3530d ago )

Have you experienced any annoying bugs with pfsense? I have an Athlon 5350 CPU that I'm considering to run this with.

CyberCam3528d ago (Edited 3528d ago )

No I haven't at all. I've actually used an Athlon x2 dual core as well as a single core Athlon, without any issues. I did have a couple of wierd bugs with version 1.4, but those were bad motherboard capacitors & bad memory problems, basically hardware issues.

I haven't experienced any issues (bugs) at all, software wise. Any issues I've had with pfSense have been hardware problems.

It's rock solid and I've been using it since 1.0! I have about 30 business' using it as their main firewall and vpn server (openvpn).

Yes.

I would love to redesign my house with gaming/movie conditions in mind. With about 5k square feet under roof I had to go with a wireless solution. I picked up a Nighthawk X6 over the weekend, but haven't a chance to set it up yet.

I have 2 cat 6 ports coming into my downstairs living room one for the ps3 hooked to my 51 inch plasma and 1 for ps4. 2 cat 6 cables to my master bedroom 1 for ps3 and 1 for computer hooked to my 42 inch lcd. Router in my office and 1 cat 6 cable running to another bedroom opposite my office, it never gets used though as the kids are usually in the office on my computer, theirs has crap for a gpu.

@Volkama

When you have a gaming PC and multiple consoles (5 consoles) and other media devices you don't really have that option. And when you're renting your place, you don't have that option either.

This is a godsend for people stuck with those awful ISP routers which are completely hit or miss.

While wireless is cool, for more performance out to my living room where my consoles are I use a Powerline Adapter. Money well spent.

Death3530d ago

Does the powerline adapter work well? I was thinking about picking one up and using it with my old router as a 4 port hub for my consoles.

Grave3530d ago (Edited 3530d ago )

Works great! I use the NETGEAR AV 200 and it has never let me down. As soon as I did the network test on my PS3 I never went back to using wireless in my living room. I think it's a must if you do a lot of gaming online, plus downloads are way better.

Death3530d ago

Thanks Grave, that's what I wanted to know. I moved my gaming tv to a different part of my house and lost my ethernet connection. The wifi works fine for gaming, but downloads have been horrific. The X6 will help my range and speed for most applications, but I will give this a try for my gaming setup.

bitedabullet213530d ago

i second this...powerline adapter was the best investment i made

luis_spartano3530d ago

I'm reforming my house, and I decided I'll upgrade my network infrastructure to wireless. I'll buy an Asus RT-AC87U.

I'll need a powerfull wifi router, because any of my devices will be wired anymore. Don't wanna cables throughout my home.

In my house I have two desktops, two notebooks, two PS3s, two smartphones, one PS4, one Vita and one 3DS and one smartTV.

My Western Digital router gets it done! It doesn't hurt that mine's has a 2tb hdd plugged into it for media on the tap.

Or...

DLNA & UPnP can be awesome with the right config
