How Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is using casino psychology to keep you playing

GamesRadar - Understandably, Activision and Sledgehammer Games want you to play Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. But not just a little bit. They want you to play it, and play it, and play it. But why leave the realisation of that dream to such ambiguous factors as 'how good it is'? Advanced Warfare has been aggressively designed to keep you playing--my words, not theirs, I hasten to add. But the presentation at Gamescom made it pretty clear to me that player retention is a major consideration and Sledgehammer is turning to a very interesting tactic for keeping you hooked: casino psychology.

Does casino phychology include simple gameplay with no depth?

Gazondaily3536d ago

Hey! There's no need for that.

Casino psychology isn't that bad...

ATi_Elite3536d ago

So COD:Aw has NO clocks, pumps oxygen into your house, routinely gives you free alcoholic beverages, has a free buffet, $1,000,000 or car giveaway, a lot of shiny stuff and bright lights, bells, whistles, and beeps to keep your attention oh and pretty women walking around smiling at you to make you feel cool while loosing all your money at the black jack table.

Ripsta7th3536d ago (Edited 3536d ago )

Bubbles for you haha

venom063536d ago (Edited 3536d ago )

"simply gameplay with no depth" is a GREAT comment... sheeple that buy this every year are so easy... Black Ops 2 with double jumps and turbo boost.. where's the innovation??

Gazondaily3536d ago

Does the game have to be innovative to be fun?

Neixus3536d ago

@Septic

No, but should be innovative for the sake of it, or else it seems like a cash grab.

LogicStomper3536d ago

"No, but should be innovative for the sake of it, or else it seems like a cash grab."

Being innovative just cause isn't a good enough reason to attempt to make each sequel innovative. Some sequels are very popular because they keep to their roots and old formula's which is what the consumers enjoy. An example being Halo. Fans want the original formula, 4v4 small arena battles with no armour abilities.

The point is, not every game MUST be innovative. Another example of this would be remasters. They're just the old game, but with improved graphics. There's nothing added in but fans still buy it. So this basically leads onto Septic's point that games don't have to be innovative to be fun.

Robotronfiend3536d ago

Yes. Slot machines and roulette are a good example of simple games with no depth.

I've already stopped playing every CoD since Black ops 2. TreyArch would bring me back if they gave us World at War 2 though.

XtraTrstrL3536d ago

I miss the dismemberment. COD is always gonna suck with them charging for map packs though. Because whether you buy them all or buy none, you get left with a smaller pool of players in the end. I'm sick of not being able to find Kill Confirmed matches after 11pm-Midnight after the 2nd-3rd map pack releases, just cuz I chose to not buy them. Why do I have to pay a WOW subscription for COD just to be able to find a few matches at night?

Clown_Syndr0me3536d ago

Its hardly the developers fault that people choose to buy them.
Oh wait, you want them for free? So Treyarch/Infinity Ward/Sledgehammer are charities? No, theyre business.
So the other option is no map packs and then you would complain about lack of support and content.

XtraTrstrL3536d ago (Edited 3536d ago )

@Clown_Syndr0me,

Actually, if they weren't greedy sniveling little snots, they'd realize it'd be better to give competitive mp mappacks free like Gorilla is doing with Killzone. And like shooters use to do on PC, like Epic Games UT games. The reason is that it keeps the community strong, and ensures everyone is around for huge day 1 sales in the next game in the series. They make way more than enough money on other packs they sell, and co-op missions and customizations. Oh, guess you forgot about all those force advertisements for Snoop Dog's voice pack huh?

Even PvZ: Garden Warfare realizes it's the smarter way to go, and is giving main mp DLC free. They make their money off the stuff that doesn't split up the community.

Muzikguy3536d ago

I wasn't much a fan of WaW. I suppose the game could be pretty sweet on these current gen consoles though! My favorites were Modern Warfare. That's mainly because of the coop challenges. I really thought those were fun.

@Xtra
I remember never hearing about that mode then one day, out of the blue, I tried it. Needless to say it's grown to be my favorite in all shooters now. I completely agree with the issues finding a match to play at certain times or the day. I also completely agree that the fragmentation of the game with the release of map packs is what kills the game. I've never bought ANY because just like you said, it doesn't matter whether you by them or not you end up in the same boat at the end. Just one person lost more money but both have less people to play with. (Well said +1)

All map packs should be free. They act like with 20+ million in annual sales just for the retail copy that they still need more money. SMH. Any other game made that much you'd see FREE support for 5 years or more. Last I checked many server farms are powered by solar panels and use cheap energy to operate so the excuse of needing money for those doesn't fly with me. All the games that have been released more than pay for those multiple times over. With all that said though, I do believe that even if map packs were free, they'd find another way to make the game more unbalanced and less enjoyable. Activision IMO should be more than happy to give out free DLC to keep people wanting to play and sell more copies of the game

ImHyjack3536d ago

No one forces anyone to play anything. Most of the guys I play with are in their Mid+ 30s we play to have fun and hear people cry. If you don't like COD or Halo or Madden you don't have to play them, but we all wish you would stop crying.

700p3536d ago

Yeah stop buying cods since black ops.

mogwaii3536d ago (Edited 3536d ago )

I realised it was the same old boring shit with black ops, got a refund and never went back. Realised battlefield is where its at.

That is a shame. AW is my favourite CoD. I hope they do a sequel one day.

LordoftheCritics384d ago

Thoroughly enjoyed AW.

Good campaign and everything.

LOGICWINS384d ago

Same. Fantastic campaign, but I wasn't crazy about the jetpacks in multiplayer.

RaidenBlack384d ago

I still prefer CoD based on historical settings or in near future settings(like CoD: Ghost) ... even though I liked infinite Warfare's campaign ... it was top notch

CobraKai384d ago

I felt it was a good time to revisit WW2

porkChop384d ago

I actually really enjoyed WWII. I never understood the hate it got.

JEECE384d ago

A lot of people who never played a shooter prior to like 2012 get really mad about anything that isn't a modern combat game.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare remains the series' lone bright spot this gen

GR: "If one series truly defined the seventh generation of consoles it was Call of Duty. Sadly, the series has struggled to reach the same heights on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and only Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare feels like the previous era of innovation and top-notch storytelling."

I quite enjoyed it but I think black ops 3 was the high point.

Modern warfare could be if a few tweaks are made and the new maps are good.

Baza1633d ago (Edited 1633d ago )

Story wise.. black opps 3 was all over the place. Modern Warfare story is so much more cohesive and actually makes sense.

Immorals1633d ago

Black ops 3 was terrible. The story was absolutely atrocious.

Knushwood Butt1632d ago

I quit that campaign after about an hour. All I remember is some crappy robot drone combat R2D2 thing that you had to use. I didn't make it past that.

Epicor1632d ago

For me the Black Ops installations have always been the high peaks in terms of PVP mode. Black ops 3 campaign was pretty bad though. Advanced Warfare's campaign was pretty good, one of the best ones - but PVP was bad!

gamer91633d ago

LOL Advanced Warfare, too funny

1633d ago
Kabaneri1633d ago

The campaign was OK, but the guns sounded like cap guns and the multiplayer maps were not memorable at all.
