Tech Analysis: Destiny beta on Xbox One

With a clear visual divide between Destiny's PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 beta builds, both versions nevertheless come out looking very respectable indeed. A locked 30fps is a core mandate for each platform, it seems, and with the Xbox One release open for access since Wednesday, it's clear this version is no exception. However, with resolution currently locked at 900p for this Xbox One build - and 1080p being targeted for release - are there any other sacrifices being made to suit this console's more restrictive specs?

To sum it up. Outside the 900p 1080p difference they have the same game under the wrapper.

Kayant3579d ago (Edited 3579d ago )

One thing I do wonder is if performance will be affected or some graphical settings will be toned down when 1080p is added on XB1.

KRUSSIDULL3579d ago

Probably not otherwise they wouldn't go up to 1080p. Why the Xbox One and PS4 version are gonna look the same is probably because of the V-sync locking it at 30FPS. From pure speculation PS4 could actually be running at higher FPS but having the the FPS jump from 45 to 30 would make it feel lagging at times.

Darkstares3579d ago

I doubt they will get to 1080p unless everything else is in tact. So now we will see if indeed by not having Kinect be tied to the system how much of a difference it actually makes.

Mr Pumblechook3579d ago (Edited 3579d ago )

THIS IS DIGITAL FOUNDRY'S WORST AND MOST POINTLESS COMPARISON.

First they are briefly comparing the out of date 900p XB one build to the 1080p PS4 beta, then they say it doesn't count because the final version of the XB one version will be 1080p, then they compare the PS4 beta to the XB one 1080p video released by IGN and say judging by that they are pretty much equal - although the video compression affects the appearance so the actual game would look even better. Then the final verdict is to reassure XB one owners that the graphics are almost identical save for the HUD.

Thomas Morgan is absolutely useless and has damaged the reputation of D.F. Either compare two beta builds, or two preview videos, or two final copies of the game. DON'T compare the XB one 900p beta with the PS4 1080p beta then say the IGN video indicates they are 'probably' going to turn out the same!
IF YOU ARE MAKING A TECHNICAL COMPARISON YOU CANNOT GUESS YOUR RESULTS!

I look forward to Digital Foundry comparing all the final release versions of Destiny, I just hope there is someone less partisan and more skilled to do it.

DeadRabbits3579d ago

The xbone is like a fat lady trying to squeeze her pudgy feet in to an undersized pair of high heels, its not gonna happen love!

Volkama3579d ago (Edited 3579d ago )

Mr Pumblechook, the article is directly comparing the beta versions of both games. That is one of your acceptable scenarios.

Are you saying the article is bad because they acknowledge the changes that have already been confirmed? I would say the article would be worse if they chose not to mention that at all.

dumahim3579d ago

@Mr Pumblechook

Wow. I read the article and thought, "how simple. No screenshots, no video, no in depth analysis. Sounds like they looked at the two of them and just wrote a couple paragraphs. I'll wait for the Digital Foundry review." Then closed the window. I didn't realize this was actually DF until I saw your post.

liquidhalos3578d ago

I hope they are both identical. Id rather have the community focus on the game rather than small differences in graphics

pretty much the same.. just that ps4 is a beast

Darkstares3579d ago

The latest video cards for the PC are beasts, the PS4 when you break it down is a bit better than the Xbox One but both are far from being beasts by today's technology.

ThePope3579d ago (Edited 3579d ago )

@darkstares

Dont try and convince these people that the PS4 is not a "beast". If the PS4 fanboys are to be beleived, it also cures cancer, holds them when their sad, shares prfits with them, is the core for the LHC, and makes games look like real life.

redwin3579d ago

Yet, I downloaded both, the One and the Ps4 and I'm incline on getting it for the Box. I'm not getting the season pass because if i get it for the box I get less for the same amount of $ than the Ps4's. Yet, I don't know why I feel that way. Just play them both and see what you think. I know, I know, they are supposed to be the same game. I was gonna get Helo anniversary instead of Destiny but the beta sold me. Sorry Helo but it is gonna be Destiny .

Mr Pumblechook3579d ago (Edited 3579d ago )

EDIT: Duplicate post.

Volkama3579d ago

When first starting the game I found it quite startlingly ugly. The intro area with the rusty cars and such, it looks awful. So bad that I think they should seriously consider re-doing the intro sequence before the game launches.

The visuals pick up significantly when you get indoors and it starts throwing more interesting light sources around, but the texturing is a mixed bag throughout.

Not entirely convinced by the game so far, but I really do want to love it so I'll keep going!

Letthewookiewin3579d ago

The draw distance is what taxes the game. Instead of rendering high details upfront its spread out so you can see more in the distance with less pop in. When in doors there is a noticeable jump in graphic fidelity because its not drawing at such distances. My theory.

girevik3579d ago

I thought the same thing when I started playing but it does get better looking.

Steven36573579d ago

How will 1080p affect the framerate on the xbone?

imt5583579d ago (Edited 3579d ago )

Quote from article :

"...While the additional 10 per cent of rendering resources afforded by the recent Kinect-unbundling XDK update are welcome, it does not offer up enough GPU horsepower to bridge the gap between 900p and 1080p rendering...."

THIS!

Well, final build comparison will be waaaay more interesting! Jump from 900p to 1080p is 44% increase in pixel density.

Both camp will enjoy in this game for sure. :)

vikingland13579d ago (Edited 3579d ago )

You could also quote the last paragraph if you like.

Edit: I gave you a interesting bubble.

imt5583579d ago (Edited 3579d ago )

No need, but thanks anyway.:)

They saw a 1080p build so far, no visual sacrifices on Xbone. Anyway, game has awful AA solution. And it's not so graphics demanding game either. Sure, i want better AA solution in final build.

Quote from article :

"...we'll have to see nearer release whether this 1080p playback is achieved with no impact to the game's smooth, consistent frame-rate...."

Like i said, final build comparison will be interesting.

@KNWS

Quote :

Directx12 could do wonders for the x box 1 with frame rate its been designed to utilise the CPU cores better and improve CPU utilisation.

I think Directx12 could potentially enable devs top push out better frame rates on xb1 than PS4.

Hm... i wonder what ICE Team will do with PS4.

mhunterjr3579d ago (Edited 3579d ago )

I'm not sure how anyone who isn't the developer can make that claim. There's no telling how close Bungie was to achieving 1080p prior to the SDK update. For all we know, they were just shy of 1080p, but settled with 900p because they were pleased with how it upscales compared to anything in between.

You and the author of this article assume the 900p is the absolute maximum resolution the previous SKU could reach. And you know what happens when we assume things.

KRUSSIDULL3579d ago

Probably because Xbox One dropped below 30 FPS at times without that 10% that is why it is 900p to begin with. That 10% might have given them just enough performance to have it at 30 FPS @ 1080p.

hello123579d ago (Edited 3579d ago )

Just stop it Imt please. I told you already the x box 1 version had no screen tearing, frame issues and you still denied it. The x box 1 version is on par with the PS4 version, and the bastion of truth for you Sony fans Digital foundry even said the x box 1 version is smooth, finding only one instance of stutter, not even a problem.

Resolution seems to be the only difference. I know its like a shock to system finding out the PS4 isn't 50 per cent more powerful or faster. But try to get over it will you its not as if i didn't fill you in why that was!

Magnes3579d ago

Wow you threw away a bunch of games that show a disparity between xb1 and ps4 visuals and made that comment didn't you...

Destiny Made Over $160 Million In Microtransaction Revenue In Less Than 2 Years

Destiny has made over $160 million in MTX revenue, and these numbers only account the data from late 2017 to early 2019.

Sgt_Slaughter349d ago

That's extremely low for microtransactions, especially for a game that's essentially designed around it

LucasRuinedChildhood349d ago (Edited 349d ago )

This was back when the game wasn't free to play.

The figures are from November 2017 to February 2019 (1 year and 4 months).

Based on that projection, the MTX revenue for Destiny 2 likely would have been closer to ~$240m for 2 years.

Not sure if premium expansions are included in that figure either although ... I'd hope that they are though and that most of the revenue was for actual content like Forsaken.

People spend way too much money on cosmetics.

Rude-ro349d ago (Edited 349d ago )

Seasons($10 and just got bumped to $12) and dungeon keys($10 each, two a year) are through the eververse(micro transaction) store.
So for those two years, in order to play a season, you would pay through micro transactions.

Sonic1881349d ago (Edited 349d ago )

Bungie Marathon will be worse since it's designed around it as well

Kurt Russell348d ago

It makes me sad to agree... but at the same time I am looking forward to giving it a go. Destiny 2 is so far in, I find it difficult to figure out what I am meant to do first.

buffig349d ago

I think FIFA alone makes over $1bn a year from mtx

anast349d ago

FIFA promotes a worldwide sport. It should make more money than destiny.

CantThinkOfAUsername349d ago (Edited 349d ago )

Let's compare something similar. Apex Legends and its ridiculous $18/$40 skins make EA a billion each year.

z2g349d ago

For as much as ppl complain how much they hate microtransactions, they sure don’t act like it. No wonder they aren’t going anywhere.

spicelicka349d ago

By "people" you're referring to millions and millions of people. Obviously the ones complaining aren't necessarily the same as the ones spending all that money.

There's millions that purchase MTX and there's nothing we can do about it

I've been thinking about playing through D1 again before it goes away...

CobraKai500d ago

That’s the sad reality of a game like this. I bought it, invested lots of money, and it can go away at anytime. I still think this was more fun than 2.

jeromeface499d ago

prob because 2 is a grindfest slog
