Satya Nadella reaffirms that the Xbox One is about gaming, not TV

It's fair to say that Microsoft's E3 2013 conference did not go as well as the company had hoped, thanks to its focus on far more than gaming.

kingtroy4007d ago (Edited 4007d ago )

Doesn't this guy know hes doing more harm than good with these Statement lately.

christocolus4007d ago (Edited 4007d ago )

Wth are you talking about?

He says the xbox one is about gaming not TV or are you reading it wrong?

kingtroy4007d ago (Edited 4007d ago )

I guess you haven't seen his other recent statement. Wasn't this clear already when Phil Spencer say it this isnt helping. Better if they left this subject alone and i own a Xbox one as well so i'm an fanboy

Ra30304007d ago

But...last year it's was about TV. So which is it or are they just trying to cover all bases and tell people what they need to hear to get them to purchase a device that's not that good at either games or TV? I just love the entertainment value Microsoft is giving us as we watch them implode.

bouzebbal4006d ago

a gaming console is made to play games in first place, obviously. xbox brand and fans have a complex with that.
it's ok a console offers all kinds of entertainment (TV...) and there is nothing bad about that but no one should forget that games are reason number 1 to own the device.

n4rc4006d ago

It was never all about TV.. Did you forget all the games shown that e3?

Oh.. But Sony spent a nice chink of time of TV.. Is that their focus now too?

Cmon..

don't talk just show please, E3 was a good start. Talking seems to get MS/xbox brand in more trouble even when they are trying to help

JBSleek4006d ago

What? He is the CEO of course he is going to talk about the damn products.

OpieWinston4006d ago

It's reassuring...They SHOWED games at E3. And plan to show even more gameplay at Comic Con/Pax/Gamescom/TGS.

They've got a pretty strong 2015 lineup;
Fable Legends
Quantum Break
Scalebound
Halo 5 Guardians
Phantom Dust (TBA)

The question at this point is will MS keep investing good money into second tier games and building studios instead of just third party relations.

THAT's the point in Satya making these statements, they're walking the walk, and talking the talk.

And if they don't talk and stay silent they run the risk of losing peoples trust in the X1.

Whitey2k4007d ago

the problem is its a little to late hardware is weak and rubbish so even thou they want it to be known as a gaming maching many believe the hardware was built around for tv and not for gaming

brotherlymoses4006d ago

Exactly, the Xbone and ps 3.5 have outdated hardware. I'll pick on up when they get good exclusives or start running demanding games in native 1080p 60fps.

meatysausage4006d ago

We all know it isnt as powerful as the ps4, but going buy your statement, the 3DS and Wii and PS2 were bad gaming consoles/handhelds because of their fairly weak hardware.

Good games are good games

JBSleek4006d ago

Games matter. If PS2 was any indication is that at the end of the day if you have awesome games you can sell.

ifrit_caress4007d ago

I don't care what Nadella says, I still have not forgiven Microsoft for the S##T they did last year. I always liked the PS3 and the Xbox 360 because I trusted both Sony and Microsoft (even after Sony's PSN incident). Then at the beginning of 2013, when Microsoft started to show how full of S##T they were going to be towards their customers, I lost all trust and respect for them.

Phil Spencer is going to have a hard time fixing the absolute muck up Don made of Xbox.

Spotie4007d ago

For me, it goes further back than that. In any case, though, I think people expecting others to forgive and forget are asking that a bit too swiftly, especially since many of those asking haven't forgiven Sony for even misconceived slights.

To date, many still misquote them on the "second job" remark, yet hold it against Sony; they're upset over "Toy Story graphics," even though it was Microsoft that said that. They still say a high price tag that still resulted in a $200 dollar loss per system was arrogance.

Seven, eight years have gone by, and these things can't be forgiven; but something Microsoft did last year should be moved on from. And stuff from further back should be completely forgotten about.

Not by me. I actually tried that, going into the reveal of the XB1 last year.

Fool me once...

I hope Microsoft really is about games now, as it pertains to the XB1, bit it's gonna take more than a bunch of multiplats filling up one E3 to prove that.

otherZinc4006d ago

@Spotie,

You forgot to mention: SONY cut backwards compatibility from the PS3 with the PS3 Slim, after making it a selling point against the XBOX 360. Then re-sold you a GOW Remake people just purchased.

XBOX 360 started with only about 10-20 games being backwards compatible, then did a "180", making more than 90% of its original XBOX Games compatible with 360.

It's funny people keep saying the XBOX ONE isn't about games, when they have more AAA exclusives than the PS4 that are out & coming this year.

Then SONY talks TV & other things this E3 & it's swept under the rug.

M$ is showing a big investment in games: Making a new Gears Of War Studio almost like 343 Industries& the Halo franchise. That's something the consumers demand. Also, signing
Augustus "Cole Train" Cole to the new Gears game.

Quantum Break, Forza Horizon Series, Halo Movies, and keeping top flight programming talent. M$ has a very solid focus.

Imalwaysright4006d ago

I was against MS policies and if MS stuck with them I would have never even consider buying a X1. They changed their policies and done everything I wanted them to do.

When I do buy a X1 and I will, it won't be to support MS because I don't give a crap about them. I'll buy it to support the devs making exclusives on their console that I want to play. Now that the "politics" are over all I care about is the games.

Agent_hitman4007d ago

I think he wont let Xbox to be sold to other companies like what other people been speculating.. It seems that he is really committed to support Xbox all the way..

I'm kind of hoping they drop most hardware support here with a 'good enough console' next generation and focus more on being a publisher. Obviously that is doing well for them and they can still push cloud gaming since it's going to tons of smart TVS and devices. They're now the largest video game publisher in the world, if they aren't doing the most sales and pre-orders, then they would be in trouble. They aren't.

Lightning7760d ago

They're gonna try again with a new gen console. If they want to compete they need to actually be competive. Say games like Halo, Blade Elder Scrolls or whatever big game it is. Needs to only be on Xbox and PC. If those games go multiplat it needs to be after a few years or at least a year later definitely not 6 months as a good portion of ppl will wait. Knowing MS they'll probably try and compete, then when things don't go there way they pivot and change the metrics again.

crazyCoconuts60d ago

I don't think you're reading the tea leaves here. Leadership hasn't used the word "exclusive" in quite a while, and they're now boasting about PS sales. They're probably done with consoles and exclusive at this point.

DodoDojo60d ago

I don't think they'll try. They have been beating a dead horse for so long now and they have finally realized it isn't going nowhere.

Fearmonkey60d ago

MS is going to drop being hardware exclusive, they are going publisher and subscription. You will be able to buy a Xbox, but you will be able to play on any platform, that's their new goal. After the hit with Oblivion remastered and major sales on PS5, no more Xbox/PC exclusives long term..

rlow160d ago

I think with the latest price hike on their console, they’re well on their way to axing hardware.

Christopher60d ago

Hardware axing entirely is bad news. They've sold most of their hardware on the Series S this generation. I think if they capture a lower hardware market that can still buy games (especially on sale), they'll actually hit a good market considering how the economy is going. Especially in the U.S. People are going to want to keep gaming and streaming isn't that good for online gaming at all.

Lightning7760d ago

@crazy they've stated multiple times they're going another gen. The next gen Controller even got leaked.

Tired of repeating myself whenever it comes to this subject of Xbox having another gen.

IRetrouk60d ago

Xbox consoles are done, all we gonna get is some branded 3rd party shite at best, ms aint interested in being a console manufacturer no more, this much is obvious.

hiawa2360d ago (Edited 60d ago )

Microsoft has too much money for that. They are rumored to release a PC/console hybrid in 2026. They will push all you hope as a publisher while having new hardware next year, so the games will appear on their platform and every other platform which is good to me if the goal is to sell software. If that is where the money is why would anyone fault MS for that? The prices are going to be insane for the next PlayStation and console from Microsoft, though, but it is what they voted for, so this is what we got.

Profchaos59d ago

I think they have to at this point I'm sure they are developing new hardware because they still have to team on payroll but it's absolutely a hail mary play.

They want to try and shift the console to be more like a PC so development costs are drastically reduced you don't need your trams to develop a Xbox version if the PC version will already run jon your console ust have it preconfigured with the graphical settings to make it seem less PC like and job done using uwp apps.

I can see it working for a few years but eventually there will be problems like with the series s as pc hardware typically ages out faster than console hardware I guess the jury's out on how it goes when your console is forced architecture will it still be a development target 5 years later will it slow PC hardware growth if games have to account for such weak hardware 7 years on

"Now he's all for it like this was Microsofts grand master plan all along."

False.

Never said it was Microsoft´s master plan all along. But it is REALLY working for us, as the fact that you´ll be able to enjoy Xbox gamers isn´t killing us. Rather the contrary, we are happy that everybody is funding our games on Gamepass.

Specially now with the imminent new $80 price tag for Xbox first party games.

It is what it is.

IAMRealHooman59d ago

Reaper22_60d ago

I agree.. great news for Microsoft and tbe xbox brand. Your Playstation is now a xbox. Microsoft wasn't kidding around when they said xbox will be everywhere. Now they are laughing all the way to the bank. Imo sony needs to do similar things. They're putting their biggest titles on PC. Might as well bring them over to other consoles too. They aren't making much on console sales.

IAMRealHooman60d ago

Of course MS wants PlayStation owners, their is literally twice as many of them.

andy8560d ago

Theres been one game in the last few years that's been good. Indy. Long way to go before you start talking about their games and their quality

Bathyj60d ago

Xbox gamers really are the strangest demographic. Not so long ago you are all saying PlayStation isn't the competition Amazon is because Phil said so. You love to parrot what your corporate talking say. That wasn't actually true Xbox and PlayStation were in direct competition but because Xbox was losing so badly Phil had to act like they weren't.

Cut to present day and Xbox and PlayStation aren't competition because Xbox has no hardware presence it's zero. In fact Microsoft is now a third party publisher and they need PlayStation they don't need Xbox or Xbox gamers they need PlayStation gamers and PC gamers and mobile phone gamers and switch gamers.

You're here cheering for the fact you've become irrelevant because you think it's important that your uncle Phil is making money. You think PlayStation gamers are upset if Microsoft releases more good games in a year than sony does. when Microsoft makes a good game you shout take that playstation!

PlayStation gamers simply say thank you I will third party publisher that makes me games

Reaper22_60d ago (Edited 60d ago )

I think you're confused. Microsoft never saw Sony as their biggest competitor. They've reiterated it for years. Sony is doing the same thing by putting their biggest franchises on PC, which is OK with Microsoft. Their will be more playstaion games coming to Microsoft ecosystems. Maybe not to xbox consoles but playstation won't be the only place you can play their games. Kind of how it is now. I would bet that they are making plans to do just that but they probably fear the backlash from their fanbase which is silly because noone is gonna stop playing games just because it's on on another platform.

Obscure_Observer60d ago

"Cut to present day and Xbox and PlayStation aren't competition because Xbox has no hardware presence it's zero."

If that was remotely true you wouldn´t be so mad about Xbox gamers getting day one games on Gamepass that you have to pay full price for.

"PlayStation gamers simply say thank you I will third party publisher that makes me games"

And we´re thankful for Playstation gamers supporting Xbox games funding our day one games on Gamepass.

Like I said: Everybody wins.

Top Secret Strategy for How to Become the Biggest Publisher in the World:
1. Buy everybody

The3faces60d ago

And this has been standard business practice in every industry. Don't hate the player hate the game! lol

Reaper22_60d ago

Buy everybody....if you can.

Obscure_Observer60d ago

I have no doubt that the vast majority of developers and studios will be looking at Microsoft as far job security is a concern.

Microsoft will allow its studios to release their games to every single platform, which means more investment on new games, more money, more jobs positions, better payment, benefits and recognition among gamers worldwide.

You though MS would crash and burn

You want MS to leave gaming forever but GAMERS clearly wants otherwise.

You said MS doesn´t know how to make great games but Xbox games dominating sales on Playstation clearly says otherwise.

Now you also have Playstation gamers to blame for helping the rich to get richer.

I warned you. You were on a fool´s errand all the time.

Now all you can do is watch as MS and Xbox gaming grows bigger and better than ever and release games for everyone!

crazyCoconuts60d ago

At the end of this road, Bethesda, Activision, etc, will still be releasing games for everyone and Xbox consoles will be no more.

If that's what you claim to have foreseen, then congratulations, you win.

MrDead60d ago

You think three major publishers no longer competing and thousands fired to feed the piggies at MS is a good thing, I don't.

More and more owned by fewer and fewer is what you're cheering for, all that leads to is $80 first party games kid.

Let’s level up games with actual contextual and intelligent enemies

Full explorable city interiors

Unlimited dialog with npcs

Xbox is terrible, but I can’t wait to see what AI brings to gaming.

porkChop127d ago

That's fair. *If* used correctly, as a tool, it can aid in development. That would give devs more time to focus on the important stuff. But we have yet to see any major devs use AI correctly.

rlow1127d ago (Edited 127d ago )

@porkChop
Can’t agree more with your statement. The trend always starts out small (like micro transactions) then the money flows and it takes over. I just hope it stays in the realm of helping developers, not take over their jobs.

ABizzel1126d ago

@Keeper

I agree with you on how AI can benefit gaming by adding consistent content or enhancing the formula of random objectives in games especially open-world and live service games (gone are the days of the repeated side mission over and over and over).

However, the problem is you’re trusting shareholders who care primarily about brand and maximizing profits, and CE level employees who primarily care about their own income and maximizing profits for shareholders by either growth or reducing expenses.

There’s a rightful big concern for AI, primarily around maintaining employee to AI balance. Shareholders and CE officers have less of a need for employees IF a single computer/kiosk and a single automated robot can do the job without the need for an annual salary, medial benefits, 401k, etc…, and as AI and robotics grow that single computer/kiosk and automated robot ends up taking the job of 10s - 100s of people. Automakers, Restaurants (make sushi places already have little robots bringing food / drink / and self orders kiosk), Fast Food, Manufacturing Warehouses, Coding, and more are all fields that can and will have mass layoffs once AI is established enough to take over those roles.

It’s hard to become a multi-millionaire or a billion/trillion dollar company and not do everything you can to maintain or grow it.

Business 1
100 coders * $100,000 salaries = $10 million per year + benefits + 401k + etc…

Business 2
(10 AI coders * $150,000) + (100 AI PCs & Robotics * $10,000 each) = $1.5 million per year + benefits + 401K etc,… + A one time charge of $1million in robotics + $100,000 per year in maintenance = $2.1 million to get the same or similar output.

If Activision was independent they’d be the first company to jump on something like this with all their games except maybe Call of Duty until they can prove it works (outside of in-game content being controlled by AI). But over time even ethical companies like Insomniac Games have to look at this and say that’s $8 million per year in savings (including additional savings on benefits and 401k) and not only that since they’re computers they can code 24/7 and get 2 - 3 years worth of work it would take those 100 coders to do in just 3 - 6 months.

That’s where the fear of AI comes into play for people.

They had Peter Moore who was undoubtedly the best executive Xbox had ever had but the rrod caused him to forced out simply because someone had to pay. In retrospect I wonder if they regret that call I legitimately think Xbox could have been great if they stuck with him.

He's the only exec that has lead the Xbox console in a positive direction every other executive caused an inevitable downward trend

porkChop127d ago

Peter Moore was great. He had a lot of enthusiasm for the brand and the games.

hollabox126d ago (Edited 126d ago )

I agree, and Peter was passionate about the Xbox gaming division. Don Mattrick was too corporate and had the One box idea with less than impressive hardware. Phil had passion for the Xbox division, but became too corporate after the launch of XB1x. I knew it was downhill when Phil introduced Gamepass trying to adopt the Netflix strategy to Xbox. Snatch up a bunch of studios, lie to the fanbase about 1st party software. All to become third party publisher with dreams of getting Gamepass on Playstation.

This Muse AI probably have something similar to Prime Directives of Robocop:

DivineHand125127d ago

I am curious to see how this will be implemented. If used right as an aid to developers rather than replacing them and producing inferior content, we could see the development time between games shorten with less bugs.

Let us see if they take the sensible approach.

Pretty sure Microsoft will be happy with both Gamepass players and PS5 sales for Indie. No sure how well those companies monetize over "players" vs "sales" tbh, but:

Koei Tecmo was celebrating over 5 million *players* for Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty in its latest Q3 financial results, while PS5 exclusive Rise of the Ronin was nowhere to be found..

https://www.koeitecmo.co.jp...

So I guess KT were happy with Wo Long´s performance on Game Pass but not so happy with Rise of the Ronin sales on PS5.

So I guess both Ninja Gaiden games day one on Game Pass this year, comes with no surprise.

Revenue grew only 2 percent because it's leveling out from the huge jumps it saw last year after acquiring Activision.
