Was PlayStation's E3 Conference A Bust?

During this generation gamers have been a custom to Sony's stellar conferences. Since, 2013 PlayStation has hit the ground running on first party games, and their show stopping E3 conferences. This conference has been a source of contention amongst gamers and PlayStation fans alike. With games like Last of Us Part 2, Ghost of Tsushima, Death Stranding, and Spiderman. How did gamers walk away unimpressed? Has Sony handed Microsoft an easy E3 win?

I like the length. It was very short and to the point. Format could have been better agreed. Everyone said they knew what to expect beforehand and the gameplay trailers were amazing on almost all levels. The biggest surprise for me was Control by Remedy. The release dates would be nice but that is par for the course among first parties this year. TLoU part 2 was game of show the gameplay was just too good.

I thought the show was great, with the exception of there not being any big surprise announcement. Lots of great looking gameplay and graphics, that's all the flash I need. Spiderman, Ghost of Tushima, Last of Us 2, the gameplay and graphics looked amazing, top of the line for video games on any system. No one beats the design and polish of Sony first party games.

This is why you are getting disagrees. Bethesda announced Starfield and Elder Scrolls 6 (we did not already know about these games)
Microsoft announced Gears 5, Tunic, Forza Horizon 4 and Halo Infinite (again, these were games never seen before E3)
Now in what way did Sony do the same thing as Microsoft and Bethesda?

Sony came out clear a month in advance and said the games they are showing are games that needed deeper dives. People NEEDED to see gameplay of TLOU2, People NEEDED to see Ghost, Death Stranding and Needed to cement Spider-Man.

New PS4 exclusives were announced at the show and are actually releasing next year, both Nioh 2 and Babylon's Fall join Days Gone, Dreams and possibly the Last of Us 2... Also why are people behaving like Sony doesn't have TGS, PGWsl, Gamescon and PSX, where all that was shown could get more concrete details

Only one of the games they showed was from 3 years ago, and it was Dreams. Spiderman and Death Stranding were announced at E3 2016 (2 years ago exactly), TLOU 2 at PSX 2016 (a year and a half), and Ghost of Tsushima at last year's E3.

Nioh 2 and Control were cool surprises for me. They may be multiplatform games, but it still adds excitement to their conference. And the big 4 exclusives they showed all look incredible. I'm really happy with E3 overall. I know some people don't feel the same way and even I agree that a couple of the conferences defintely could have been better, but as a whole I'm more than satisfied.

Yeah it was great to see gameplay to their upcoming games but is a conference needed for that? I wanted to see new games that I had not seen before but they only showed "Quantum Break 2", Ni-oh 2 and RE2 remake. Also being from Europe when they stopped showing games and started talking I almost fell a asleep due to the late hours.

Xbox stage was awesome looking. Sony went almost straight up Theatre Mode. Which was prob disappointing for some. I actually watched it in a theatre and it was pretty awesome.

No massive, unexpected news which was a let down.

But, the games they showed were incredible! New games soon to be released and some insane remakes in RE2 and KH3 w/custom KH3 PS4! Great games and lots of gameplay.

I did want one big shocking announcement, but I’m happy with the games that are releasing soon. Not their flashiest E3 but the games will end up speaking for themselves in the long run.

How was the quality in the theaters?
I just rewatch all the trailers in 1440p (streaming live wasn't doing justice), and the graphics were nothing but absolute stunning.

I know people, including myself, wanted shocking announcements but then we'll complain if the game doesn't release until 2020. Though, RE2 was a good announcement - glad there was no leak leading up to E3. Also, it was great to know that RE2 will release in Jan 2019 and people cheered. So maybe that's why we didn't get a few more new titles announced.

At the moment, I find that hard to believe even though it can and there are AAA games that fell flat on their faces with all the hype. But right now, I'm so intrigued about the game, and I tried looking for weaknesses in the game and I just can't at the moment. Sure it just shows him traveling empty lands but there's some mystery behind it. But trailer 2 was what hooked on this.

No, it was a solid press conference but clearly not their best, they seem to feel they have this gen won and they probably do. For being in cruise control it was still pretty good, Last of Us 2 totally killed it, and the Resident Evil 2 remake looks sick, like a true remake not just a copy of the original at all. When you have games like that, you can't bust. As much of XBOX One tried, they can't hide that they don't have that many AAA exclusives. So while they revealed more games for sure, those will all be on PS4 also, so I don't think it's a big deal.

The games were front and center and the gameplay reveals were next level. But the show lacked the dazzle and excitement that E3 is all about. They haven't been able to top their 2016 show and I dont think well see them do it the rest of this gen. But I'll be happy if they prove me wrong.

As someone who hates story driven games in general there was not a whole lot shown to get excited about. It seems like besides dreams and VR that's all Sony makes anymore third person heavy story driven games.

In terms of Releasing PS4 exclusives PS4 is pretty much at the end but Sony will support the PS4 till 2022 like how PS3 got supported but from Shadow fall Second fall no 1st party game released on the PS3 so Sony will follow the same trend I am expecting DEATH STRANDING to be the last PS4 exclusive releasing on the PS4

No it was actually pretty good. They showed us what we wanted to see and that was games. Why show more games when we didn’t even know much about the big 4. Hell we don’t even know much about death stranding still lol.

Imo it was on the same level as MS, with MS being slightly better because of the studios they acquired, which imo doesn’t really matter to me at moment because they didn’t even announce any games they were working on.

The best conference for me so far was Bethesda. This E3 was kinda lack luster for each individual company, but as a whole, it was a really good e3 for gamers.

-New halo, gears and forza for MS.
-Gameplay for ghost of t, death stranding, spider ma, and Tlous2 from Sony.
-Fall out game, and elderscolls 6.
-Also the huge amount of multi platform games announced.

this was the worst e3 Sony has ever done. did the official twitch ever come back after it went offline during the stupid 10 minute post show in the middle of the F'ing conference? Had to watch the whole thing 10 minutes behind on youtube because of that. Also the audio was complete crap. The talking in last of us sounded like a student film was in that barn trying to capture it on one of those tiny booms attached to the front of their digital camcorder. Then at the end of the show on the youtube stream I was watching the shows audio cut to 5 minutes ahead of the video (again I was behind because was playing catch up) but at the end it wanted to do "LIVE" audio while my video remained 10 minutes behind.
The games they shown were great but I will never forgive them for constant teases of Dreams and no payoff. That was terrible

That was a different time, back then e3 was for the investors, all sucked (but yeah that one sucked worse than usual for the time) But in todays era this is supposed to be for the fans, and stopping the show to stall for 15 minutes while they changed venues, as well as Shawn layden talking a mile a minute like he was just stalling for even more time and was saying whatever entered his head instead of having prepared a speech with a teleprompter to keep him to task was mindblowingly bad. Then these terrible music numbers. WHY. I could understand if they lead INTO the trailers, but they were separate. It would make sense for 1min of music then the screen starts the trailer and the musician does live music accompanying the trailer. But just random coffee shop jam sessions... WHY.
I would take RIDGE RACERRR over that anyway. Get Kaz up there, I welcome it.

The YouTube stream was also terrible with low video and audio quality and I often had to refresh the page just to semi-fix the echoing/looping audio. It was an absolute shitshow overall.

I think the main games Sony showed off where tremendous, the problem with the conference was the pacing. The live music performances where totally unnecessary and felt like it just dragged out the conference. The conference would have been perfect if Sony just had consistent flow starting with Last Of Us, then right into Ghost of Tsushima, followed by Control, Resident Evil 2 Remake, Kingom Hearts III, Death Stranding, Nioh 2 and end off with Spiderman. There would have been nothing wrong going with a 50min - 1hr long conference had everything just flown together. The few VR games, Call Of Duty BO3/4 map news and Destiny DLC should have been shown off after the main conference ended. Overall the conference was good, but it definitely could have been better in my opinion.

They didn't crush it. It was a bad conference, plain and simple. They showed some good games, sure. But the pacing was terrible, the whole thing was super short, that garbage intermission, Shawn Layden was really unprepared, the live musical performances were awkward and totally unnecessary, and there weren't any big reveals from Sony. They couldn't even give release dates for games they've been showing for 2 or 3 years in a row.

This conference felt like it was mostly filler and padding. I love Sony's games, but a bad conference is a bad conference. Given that Sony usually sets the benchmark for these shows, everyone was clearly expecting more from them. And they didn't deliver at all.

Sony's at an in between time in their development cycle. Their major studios either just released a game (God of War, Detroit), are about to release a game (Spiderman, Days Gone), or are deep in development on a game (Ghost of T, Last of Us 2, Death Stranding). It was gonna be hard for them to put together a blockbuster show when they just don't have the studio availability right now to have brand new E3 ready projects in the pipeline.

This was a low-key event, and I think it was appropriate for this year. Sony is comfortable, and they're nurturing their upcoming releases to keep them as in focus as possible. After Sony's conference, I can tell you every game that was shown while telling you about all my highlight moments. After Microsoft's conference, I can rattle off a handful of titles, but plenty of games got lost in the middle with the volume over content style, as actual gameplay wasn't any kind of focus. Sony showed me they really care about their first party studios. Microsoft just used theirs to round out announcement numbers with the word "exclusive" tossed in.

The two very different E3 approaches between Sony and Microsoft really just highlighted the difference in their comfort level right now. Microsoft was desperate to play the PR game and convince people not just games, but exclusives are coming. Sony just kicked back and reenforced the quality of their studios with basically zero PR work during the actual showcase. Really, Sony is winning at this point for simply knowing where they stand and not doing more than necessary in a year where pushing too hard would create a much bigger risk for blunder.

No Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

Ghost of Tsushima seemed ok? I guess. The combat looked good but the game needs to be more fleshed out.. Death Stranding is just a walking sim with an intense story? There was literally no combat shown. Definitely damped my expectations for the game. The Last of Us and Spiderman looked great.

The PS4 Pro Kingdom Hearts console is a smart move. That will at least entice people to buy the console. It’s hard, MS essentially snatched 80% of the third party games to show on the conference.

Here’s my takeaway. Playstations E3 presentation was probably the worst it had all generation, but it’s big titles helped move the conference along for people to get excited. I felt that ‘showcase’ could have been better in terms of presentation by a long shot. I felt there was NO need to have that 22 minute long Intermission (it was SO long) and it felt like a ‘pre show’ being crammed into the conference. People don't need to play intruments before showing games.. I get it.. playing it for Uncharted LL and GoW was ok i guess, but I want to see the game, not someone playing an instrument for 5 minutes.

i’d give it a 7.5/10 for the overall conference
but an 8/10 for showing more in depth looks at Playstation’s many upcoming AAA exclusives.

Death Stranding was like wtf. I wanted to see more. I wasn't hyped by it in the beginning but now i need more of it. Day one.

There was no big announcement, but the games we already knew looked fantastic. What made Sony's conference feel like a meh, was the presentation its self. Pacing was off and having that horrible intermission brought it down. Those 10-15 mins of downtime could of been showing new games and surprising announcements, instead of rushing things trying to fill the time. Overall it wasn't a bust, but just not great like the last couple years.

PS5 100% on the way, nothing new because this is the last year of big games, anything else is PS5 bound. Sony blew me away with ghosts, Spiderman, death stranding and tlou2, they all looked stunning. Microsoft did nothing but dissapoint with naff trailers and milking long dead franchises that no one cares about anymore.

Meh. MS can get the “flashiest crown” or whatever popularity title they can get. HOWEVER....

History has shown time and time again that MS usually wins (according to media) “the best E3 show”, but like any pre-election political campaign it is usually full of “razzle and dazzle” only to be followed by sad disappointment. Just look at social media on how triggered Xbox fanboys could be whenever a PS exclusive gets a high critical rating and an Xbox exclusive (or lack thereof) gets the opposite.

I know a lot of people would agree with me, but I would rather get a boring, “plain-as-a-vanilla” Sony E3 conference and knowing that Sony would still deliver.

Considering they have the largest exclusives in the industry and they did extended trailers and gameplay sessions for them while most other publishers simply showed teasers or logos, no, it wasn't a bust.

What the hell were Sony thinking? They are one of the biggest media companies on the planet with countless Hollywood movies under their belt and this was what they came up with. Whoever devised that format and the person who gave this the green light should get the boot. Do they not plan these bloody things well in advance?

Please understand, i'm not having a dig at the games on show, which all looked remarkable but the awful way the fractured production was put together from an entertainment standpoint. I understand why they did it and that they wanted to try something a little bit different this year, but for me it was a gamble that didn't pay off.

I like the Tsumi, Dayz Gone games and TLOU, not really into Spiderman, but those were the only games of interest to me and I did not like the way their conference was presented especially the huge pause. I think Sony went into the presser doing as little as possible as they have been in the lead this gen and just coasted. I just did not see the excitement and the audience was mostly quiet.

YES! looked like it was put together at the last minute, no pacing, it honestly took away from the games on display. Also I have to say that in some cases I think they showed too much. I don't want to see all the content from the games (especially single player) that I will be playing. Show smaller clips. It was too much.

Last of Us 2 looked utterly spectacular. Ghosts looked breath taking. Spiderman....looked good but again they showed too much. Death Stranding....I am still scratching my head....but I want MORE. Looks to be some futuristic delivery quest game across crazy terrain with....Stranger Things elements thrown in for good measure.

No mortal Kombat? No Bioshock? What they showed was good though. Ghost looks amazing, resident evil 2 looks amazing. Even tlou2 surprised me with incredible gameplay. I still don’t know what death stranding is.

I feel a bit sorry for days gone. After seeing TLOU2 gameplay, days gone looks so much more generic now... but still getting it day one regardless cuz it's an AAA exclusive

The games were great. Spider-man looks incredible and fun, Ghost was gorgeous, Last of Us was gripping and raw and I mean RE2?!...but the conference itself was strange and presented in an awkward way. I mean a ten minute break in the middle of a conference? I think that soured the momentum of the presentation.

For me, nothing special, the only announcement that i liked was Nioh 2, every other gameplay demo and all was expected, this is not say it is bad, sony still offer the best single player games but as for the conference, I wasn't really that impressed

No, because it showed some great games. I don't actually care about the "show". I look forward to seeing trailers, demos and gameplay and I got that from Sony this year. Not much in the way of new announcements, but meh. Also, how could the company who showed more exclusives hand the win to a company who showed fewer exclusives? That doesn't make sense.

I only watch these confrences if at all for gameplay videos. The fact that Sony mostly did that was a huge plus. Their only mistake was talking at all. Show the games and leave it at that, I can do without the corporate talk "we're awesome, you're awesome, these games are awesome " which 99%"of the time is pretty cringeworthy.

Nah not a total bust BUT it did seem like they were playing it cool. I really enjoyed the gameplay footage of all the games shown.
