Was PlayStation's E3 Conference A Bust?

During this generation gamers have been a custom to Sony's stellar conferences. Since, 2013 PlayStation has hit the ground running on first party games, and their show stopping E3 conferences. This conference has been a source of contention amongst gamers and PlayStation fans alike. With games like Last of Us Part 2, Ghost of Tsushima, Death Stranding, and Spiderman. How did gamers walk away unimpressed? Has Sony handed Microsoft an easy E3 win?

Games that we already knew about and no release dates did not exactly fire things up. This has been happening ever since they started their own conference.

DarkVoyager2165d ago (Edited 2165d ago )

“Games that we already knew about and no release dates did not exactly fire things up”

Exactly and on top of that the conference was short and the format was horrible. No surprises or anything.

Eonjay2165d ago

I like the length. It was very short and to the point. Format could have been better agreed. Everyone said they knew what to expect beforehand and the gameplay trailers were amazing on almost all levels. The biggest surprise for me was Control by Remedy. The release dates would be nice but that is par for the course among first parties this year. TLoU part 2 was game of show the gameplay was just too good.

Skull5212165d ago (Edited 2165d ago )

Wasn’t great, no surprises. Microsoft’s was good and Sony was meh. Overall not too exciting of an e3. Lack of new announcements makes me think PS5 may be closer than we think.

pwnmaster30002165d ago

That was basically for every company tho. Microsoft and Bethesda did the same thing. Which isn’t all that bad to me. I’m just glad to see they are in the works and it’s looking good.

pwnmaster30002165d ago

I can’t believe I’m getting disagrees lol. It’s fact, tell me the exact release date for gears and halo? What about tes6 or the new ip from Bethesda? It’s called business. Make your product more appealing.

Bruh2165d ago

@pwnmaster3000

Halo's trailer was also just a game engine showcase, its WAY off from being made, they even said so

lxeasy2165d ago

You got disagrees because tes6, Gears, and Halo got announced yesterday without a released date. As for dinner some of these games Sony showed got revealed 3 years ago and still no release date yet they keep making appearences.

GamingIVfun2165d ago (Edited 2165d ago )

I thought the show was great, with the exception of there not being any big surprise announcement. Lots of great looking gameplay and graphics, that's all the flash I need. Spiderman, Ghost of Tushima, Last of Us 2, the gameplay and graphics looked amazing, top of the line for video games on any system. No one beats the design and polish of Sony first party games.

Team_Litt2165d ago

"Games that we already knew about and no release dates did not exactly fire things up. "

"Microsoft and Bethesda did the same thing."
This is why you are getting disagrees. Bethesda announced Starfield and Elder Scrolls 6 (we did not already know about these games)
Microsoft announced Gears 5, Tunic, Forza Horizon 4 and Halo Infinite (again, these were games never seen before E3)
Now in what way did Sony do the same thing as Microsoft and Bethesda?

ChrisW2165d ago

What gets me is that you getting disagrees here on N4G for seemingly no reason surprises you!

(I just checked your bio to see how long you've been a member... Almost 11 years.)

pwnmaster30002165d ago (Edited 2165d ago )

@ChrisW

I made this account along time ago during the early years of the ps3 and Xbox, when flamewar was a big thing. I forgot how things work. I literally forgot about this for almost a couple of years until last year. Then I for got about it again and here we are now lol.

Sevir2164d ago

I could careless, about harping on the fact that these games were announced at prior events... Sony came out clear a month in advance and said the games they are showing are games that needed deeper dives. People NEEDED to see gameplay of TLOU2, People NEEDED to see Ghost, Death Stranding and Needed to cement Spider-Man.

And I'm ok with being transparent in the face of all this.

MS announced games ANOTHER HALO, ANOTHER GEARS ANOTHER FORZA...

New PS4 exclusives were announced at the show and are actually releasing next year, both Nioh 2 and Babylon's Fall join Days Gone, Dreams and possibly the Last of Us 2... Also why are people behaving like Sony doesn't have TGS, PGWsl, Gamescon and PSX, where all that was shown could get more concrete details

KillBill2164d ago

You are missing the point where Sony just showed more of games they have already shown. While Microsoft had enough shown that many were stuff people were maybe hoping for or guessing would show but nothing had been shown of them yet.

zeuanimals2164d ago (Edited 2164d ago )

@lxeasy

Only one of the games they showed was from 3 years ago, and it was Dreams. Spiderman and Death Stranding were announced at E3 2016 (2 years ago exactly), TLOU 2 at PSX 2016 (a year and a half), and Ghost of Tsushima at last year's E3.

morganfell2164d ago

"While Microsoft had enough shown that many were stuff people were maybe hoping for .."

Are you referring to the multiplatform stuff? So you are thanking Microsoft for spending marketing dollars to show multiplatform trailers that will also be on the PS4 at their conference. Now I know what it takes to buy you, the words "World Premiere". It doesn't matter the platform, as soon as you hear those words you become an instant believer in the stage where they are presented.

Smoke and mirrors has your number.

OB1Biker2165d ago (Edited 2165d ago )

The format was different and I understand why so many third party announcements went to Ms conference. Mystery solved I guess.
I loved Ghost and Spider man which were games of the E3 for me though.

Team_Litt2165d ago

Genuine question, how did this solve the mystery of why so many third party announcements went to Xbox conference?

ninsigma2165d ago

Because Sony didn't leave room for them so they went on ms stage instead.

OB1Biker2165d ago

@Team
I said the format was different. Just put yourself in their shoes. Also like nins said Sony seemed more interested in a more intimate event.

Team_Litt2164d ago

Ninsigma hahaha! Are you kidding me! Sony's presser was all filler! Those long ass music sections? The lame intermission?? They could have filled that cringe out with game announcements from third parties and it would be a thousand times better!

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 2164d ago
Brave_Losers_Unite2165d ago

The games were good but next time no intermission crap

UCForce2165d ago (Edited 2165d ago )

I hope so. For Sony, they can’t win forever. I just hope that Sony can do better next time.

starchild2165d ago

Nioh 2 and Control were cool surprises for me. They may be multiplatform games, but it still adds excitement to their conference. And the big 4 exclusives they showed all look incredible. I'm really happy with E3 overall. I know some people don't feel the same way and even I agree that a couple of the conferences defintely could have been better, but as a whole I'm more than satisfied.

senorfartcushion2165d ago (Edited 2165d ago )

CONTROL

YOU IGNORANT SOD

CONTROL!!!!

Also: remember when Sony warned you about only showing 4 games? Me too.

Cough* fartnoise*

Imalwaysright2165d ago (Edited 2165d ago )

Yeah it was great to see gameplay to their upcoming games but is a conference needed for that? I wanted to see new games that I had not seen before but they only showed "Quantum Break 2", Ni-oh 2 and RE2 remake. Also being from Europe when they stopped showing games and started talking I almost fell a asleep due to the late hours.

Rude-ro2164d ago

Then the entire e3 was a bust.
We knew of 98% of the games shown.
E3 was a bust overall.
This is just pointing out that this gen is about over.
One console going out with a bang and has a huge library to get ready for next gen, the other is preparing for next gen.

Gh05t2164d ago

This is pretty much my take away from this E3. I will admit I was a nay on new consoles incoming but after this year I think 2020 will be the beginning of the next generation. Announcements will come next year of new consoles and new games. And if this isnt the case then this years E3 was just utterly disappointing in general for no reason.

Sevir2164d ago

They've been doing hour long conferences for the past 3 years... I liked what was shown, but the format this year wasn't the best. But there were 3rd party surprises.

Gamist2dot02165d ago

The presentation was meh but the games were awesome! Lots of games releasing in 2019. And I still can't figure out Kojima's game.

SmielmaN2165d ago

Xbox stage was awesome looking. Sony went almost straight up Theatre Mode. Which was prob disappointing for some. I actually watched it in a theatre and it was pretty awesome.

No massive, unexpected news which was a let down.

But, the games they showed were incredible! New games soon to be released and some insane remakes in RE2 and KH3 w/custom KH3 PS4! Great games and lots of gameplay.

I did want one big shocking announcement, but I’m happy with the games that are releasing soon. Not their flashiest E3 but the games will end up speaking for themselves in the long run.

Gamist2dot02165d ago

How was the quality in the theaters?
I just rewatch all the trailers in 1440p (streaming live wasn't doing justice), and the graphics were nothing but absolute stunning.

I know people, including myself, wanted shocking announcements but then we'll complain if the game doesn't release until 2020. Though, RE2 was a good announcement - glad there was no leak leading up to E3. Also, it was great to know that RE2 will release in Jan 2019 and people cheered. So maybe that's why we didn't get a few more new titles announced.

SmielmaN2165d ago (Edited 2165d ago )

Gamist- Theatre screen quality was meh. Free popcorn, drink, $10 PSN code was great though! Theatre was packed.

blackblades2165d ago (Edited 2165d ago )

Has anyone ever thought death stranding might actually suck though. I got faith in the men but I seen hype before in something and it didn't go so well.

Gamist2dot02165d ago

At the moment, I find that hard to believe even though it can and there are AAA games that fell flat on their faces with all the hype. But right now, I'm so intrigued about the game, and I tried looking for weaknesses in the game and I just can't at the moment. Sure it just shows him traveling empty lands but there's some mystery behind it. But trailer 2 was what hooked on this.

Lightning Mr Bubbles2165d ago

No, it was a solid press conference but clearly not their best, they seem to feel they have this gen won and they probably do. For being in cruise control it was still pretty good, Last of Us 2 totally killed it, and the Resident Evil 2 remake looks sick, like a true remake not just a copy of the original at all. When you have games like that, you can't bust. As much of XBOX One tried, they can't hide that they don't have that many AAA exclusives. So while they revealed more games for sure, those will all be on PS4 also, so I don't think it's a big deal.

Lightning Mr Bubbles2165d ago

When I said Last of US 2 killed it, I mean it was amazing. It totally owned! Just making sure there is no confusion there.

thehitman13982165d ago

Rly..... rly.... out of ALL the ppl in the video game industry, it him that's gets a very big pass on if its gonna be great or not.

Cant believe you actually came on here with that comment..smdh

Norman Reedus is the delivery man (stealth) trying to avoid the interdimensional invaders

Mads Mikkelsen is the soldier fighting them

Del Toro is the scientist who can stop them

hulk_bash19872165d ago (Edited 2165d ago )

The games were front and center and the gameplay reveals were next level. But the show lacked the dazzle and excitement that E3 is all about. They haven't been able to top their 2016 show and I dont think well see them do it the rest of this gen. But I'll be happy if they prove me wrong.

Omnislashver362165d ago

I thought this was the best one personally. They're firing all cylinders on the end of this generation. I didn't expect many new games.

SmielmaN2165d ago

The games are incredible for sure. The “Show” wasn’t grand, but seeing so much gameplay left me wanting to watch more.

Gh05t2165d ago (Edited 2165d ago )

Firing on all cylinders... The games look homogeneous as hell. Guess what you get another third person action game, guess what's next another third person action game, guess what's next another third person probably suspense with action game, guess what's next another third person very action game.

As someone who hates story driven games in general there was not a whole lot shown to get excited about. It seems like besides dreams and VR that's all Sony makes anymore third person heavy story driven games.

Sevir2164d ago

@Ghost then this E3 as a whole must suck, because damn near everything shown was a 3rd person action game with story, some might have multiplayer focus. Soooo you must just hate gaming all together

Ceaser98573612165d ago

This gen is almost over and Sony has fired all their cylinders so now they have few more exclusives to roll out in 2019 and 7th sep 2018 (spiderman) then they will move on to Next gen where Sony will start doing the same and better

2164d ago
Ceaser98573612164d ago (Edited 2164d ago )

stefan

"Almost over? We just passed half way"

In terms of Releasing PS4 exclusives PS4 is pretty much at the end but Sony will support the PS4 till 2022 like how PS3 got supported but from Shadow fall Second fall no 1st party game released on the PS3 so Sony will follow the same trend I am expecting DEATH STRANDING to be the last PS4 exclusive releasing on the PS4

blackblades2165d ago (Edited 2165d ago )

Yeah agree on that lack of dazzle and excitement but hell can't expect sony to show everything at the end of the ps4 cycle so maybe next year. At least we know what to expect from the 4 games that's coming this and next year. Beside like they said dont expect much and we all kind knew that they were going to focus on those 4 games. Ms probably had the better presentation but at least sony is focusing on the last few big exclusives of this gen then waiting on the next generation. Wouldve been funny if sony took a jab at ms and said "thanks for showing all those multiplatform games for us."

pwnmaster30002165d ago (Edited 2165d ago )

No it was actually pretty good. They showed us what we wanted to see and that was games. Why show more games when we didn’t even know much about the big 4. Hell we don’t even know much about death stranding still lol.

Imo it was on the same level as MS, with MS being slightly better because of the studios they acquired, which imo doesn’t really matter to me at moment because they didn’t even announce any games they were working on.

The best conference for me so far was Bethesda. This E3 was kinda lack luster for each individual company, but as a whole, it was a really good e3 for gamers.

-New halo, gears and forza for MS.
-Gameplay for ghost of t, death stranding, spider ma, and Tlous2 from Sony.
-Fall out game, and elderscolls 6.
-Also the huge amount of multi platform games announced.

Pretty good for me man.

blackblades2165d ago (Edited 2165d ago )

Why no one talking about vr games they shown. People B about the vita not getting supported but the VR are getting games and everyone is silent. From software "Deracine" people. E3 ain't over people free stuff tomorrow from sony.

Tobse2165d ago

VR is a dead fad at this point, this is why.

Gazondaily2165d ago

You can't force people to talk about VR. That stuff did not look compelling to me at all. The music in that Tetris game was good though.
