9 Ways the Xbox One is Secretly Better than the PlayStation 4

Both 2016 and 2017 have not been kind to Microsoft and the Xbox One - at least from a consumer perspective. Not only is the exclusive lineup a barren wasteland save for Gears 4, Halo Wars 2 and the immaculate Cuphead, but Platinum Games' open-world dragon-riding loot-grabber Scalebound was also canned for the foreseeable future.

If an Xbox One is your only console of choice, chances are you're pretty peeved at the lack of support from top to bottom. Even the dashboard is a stuttering mess that's seen multiple iterations and overhauls, with another apparently arriving before Christmas.

However, led by Head of Xbox Phil Spencer stepping in to replace the godawful marketing 'skills' of Don Mattrick, Microsoft have reinvested their sizeable coffers of cash into where it matters most. Spencer himself has been refreshingly candid about just how much Microsoft messed up the system's launch in 2013, doubling down on hard work and customer-requested features to ensure that if you are still in camp Xbox, you're getting a much more rewarding experience.

9. PSNow vs gamepass: PSNow defintiely could have been implemented better. Game pass is a nice feature. Basically MSs own version of ea/origin access

8. Achievement tracking: Definitely something that would be great to have on playstation.

7. "Monthly Subscription Games You Actually Want To Play": Load of BS. It's pretty subjective and PS+ offerings the last few months have been way better.

6. "Infrastructure - No Wasted Projects": Also BS. PSVR has been doing better than expected. How is PS4 Pro included in this?? It's doing as was advertised. True the Vita has been all but forgotten by Sony though.

5. Changing gamertag: This qualifies as making a console better?? It's defintiely a nice feature and I wouldn't mind changing my PSN name and would welcome the ability to do so but it's nothing major.

4. DL Speeds: What?? PS4 speeds have been faster this gen. On the same connection my XB1 would take forever.

3. Early Access games: It's nice I guess??

2. EA access: Not something I'm interested in as there aren't enough games on it that I wanna play to be worth it but yeah it's weird the way Sony handled that. Not enough value for gamers?? I think you should let gamers decide that Sony. Seems like a BS excuse and there is a totally different reason for why they didn't allow it.

1. "Controllers: MUCH Better Battery Life Plus Elite & Custom Options": The elite is very much a nice option but I wasn't the biggest fan of it myself. PS4 now has a few options for "pro" controllers. Not as customize-able though and it would be nice if they weren't wired. Using AA batteries kept my XB1 controller going for so fricken long it was great. I don't have a problem with the PS4 battery life though. For rechargable batteries they last a decent amount of time and the odd time I don't charge the controller enough I have a 2nd ready to go.

ILostMyMind2403d ago

The only thing i really miss on PS4 is The battery life. It is horrible.

ninsigma2403d ago

Fair enough. Like i said in my OP i dont have a problem with the times but everyones mileage will differ.

4Sh0w2403d ago

So a subjective piece that I think many Xbox fans would agree with is wrong because it doesn't match your subjective opinion?

KickSpinFilter2403d ago

Never an issue with having two controllers

nitus102403d ago

I think you meant to say Dual Shock 4 (DS4).

That said you can easily get around the limited (approx 6 ~ 8 hours) battery life by:
1. Extension charging cable - its very cheap although you will have a cable on the floor
2. Replace the battery - fairly cheap but you void any warranty since you have to open the DS4 to do this.
3. Use a battery bank - you can get a clip-on or uses a short cable
4. Purchase an additional DS4 and use alternate charging. Useful when you want to play games that support two controllers.
5. Play for about three hours - rest for one hour while charging the DS4 then play again. Rince repeat. The cheapest solution.

InTheZoneAC2403d ago

I charge mine every night. Turn off the controller speaker and dim your light. Only time I ever have to charge is if I've literally been playing all day and I'm still playing late on the weekend.

Silly gameAr2403d ago

That's it? That reads like a comment an xbox fanboy would make on N4G. A lot of subjective stuff, a couple that make no sense, and not one fact on the list.

ninsigma2403d ago

Yeah there's a lot of subjectivity there that i dont agree with but then I guess the article is a subjective opinion piece to be fair.

OB1Biker2403d ago

Those feel like grabbing at straw tbh. I read you mention Vita. Well. I'm sorry but anyway people look at it and downplay it, it's still a handheld which has the merit to exist for a few gamers to enjoy while there is no Xbox handheld for the respective systems.

ninsigma2403d ago

Not downplaying the vita. I owned one until last year. Great device but it has almost no focus from Sony anymore to the point they don't even talk about it at big conferences which is a shame.

OB1Biker2403d ago (Edited 2403d ago )

@ninsigma
I'm not denying it but its still PS device, an option available to PS gamers. Better than no option at all and more ways to play is no negative option

ILostMyMind2403d ago

I'd buy a Vita tomorrow if Sony release a model without that expensive card. It's all Sony's fault.

nitus102403d ago

@ILostMyMind

You can get a "MicroSD card adaptor for the Vita".

Just copy what I have said and put it into Google or any search engine and you will get find plenty of vendors that sell the product which is very cheap. You should always consider buying a high-end MicroSD card to get the best performance.

Just because the Nintendo Switch supports MicroSD cards Nintendo still suggests high-end cards for the best performance. If you use a Vita MicroSD card adaptor (about $5 USD) you should still consider getting a decently specced SD card.

I own both consoles. And they forgot to mention Backwards compatibility and Play Anywhere. Those two are actually pretty good, and the first one at least is something Sony used to do (up to the original PS3s, not the subsecuent.) and should reconsider.

ninsigma2403d ago

BC would be nice. Not major at the point in the gen imo but yeah it's definitely a win there for Xbox.

Play anywhere great but it's led to there being no exclusives on Xbox anymore which devalues the point of having one imo but that's just me. If you can make use of the play anywhere, I don't really see a need for the Xbox (which is why I trades mine in).

nitus102403d ago

Backward compatibility is only a console seller at the start of the generation however it is only a value-added feature later on and this is borne out by the XB1 which did not support limited backward compatibility until two years into the generation. The PS4 still sells 2:1 over the XB1 worldwide, little has changed.

Mr_Writer852403d ago (Edited 2403d ago )

"play anywhere"

Oh you mean like Cross Buy?

Yeah that's already a thing on PlayStation.

Gazondaily2403d ago

". DL Speeds: What?? PS4 speeds have been faster this gen. On the same connection my XB1 would take forever. "

Not for me and a lot of others. Apparently there is a bandwith cap on the PS? Not really sure but but the really slow download speed on PS is offset by the shitty installation times on Xbox for games on disc (which I dont have many of tbf).

One thing I would definitely put is up the multitasking and suspend/resume on the Xbox. On PS its shit in comparison.

The other stuff would be the media apps and other shit that are integrated to the Xbox but I cba to go into that

Ron_Danger2403d ago

I downloaded the 43 gig Gran Turismo: Sport beta in 76 minutes on Sunday. I was also playing Everybody's Golf online and my fiancée was watching Netflix on her iPad at the same time. Please explain to me and everyone else how it's a Sony issue you're having slow download speeds.

You say in your comment "not for me" which right there is you admitting that it's a personal issue. Stop trying to blur the lines between fact and opinion just because some Sony Fanboys ruffled your feathers over an article you agree with.

Gazondaily2403d ago (Edited 2403d ago )

"You say in your comment "not for me" which right there is you admitting that it's a personal issue. Stop trying to blur the lines between fact and opinion "

What part of "not for me and many others don't you get? "You can read can't you?

And ninsigma is the one who made a factual statement saying:

"PS4 speeds have been faster this gen. "

So why didnt you open your trap and direct your angst to him? Go on....answer that. Do tell me how I'm passing opinion as fact when ninsigma is the one doing exactly that?

Answer the question then come back to me.

ninsigma2403d ago

Not sure about any bandwidth cap but if everybody is seeing different results then I don't really see that as a valid point to make.

Ron_Danger2403d ago

He said PS4 download speeds have been faster this gen and I'm agreeing with him. Why've would I have angst against that.

At the start of this gen the PS4 downloads were slow, not ps3 era slow, but still slow. In the past year I've noticed that my PS4 speeds have almost tripled and I havent upgraded my internet speed plan.

If you are having slow speeds, it's your problem, not sony's.

Everyone around here knows how big an MS cheerleader you are. We all see you comment patterns where you act all unbiased for a few months while MS news cools down but the second they announce any little thing you jump to the forefront spewing crap buzzwords like "the beast" in hopes that you can gather as much esteem boosting "agrees" you can get.

Gazondaily2403d ago (Edited 2403d ago )

Ron_Danger

"He said PS4 download speeds have been faster this gen and I'm agreeing with him"

Hold up one sec- so HE made a statement and passed it as fact and you told ME not to pad my opinion as fact when my comment clearly talks about personal experiences, which you recognise yourself?

Are you thick or what? Where are your stats providing these facts??

"Everyone around here knows how big an MS cheerleader you are. "

Sorry this is just you now admitting you're clueless and can't back up what you say and are now deflecting hard.

Call me a cheerleader but id rather be that than an intellectually defective keyboard warrior who can't even back up half the BS he spouts.

"If you are having slow speeds, it's your problem, not sony's. "

Ah but it's MS' fault if Xbox users are having slow speeds ?? Because you agree with Ninsigma there. Lol what moronic logic. The sad thing is you can't even see the hypocrisy 😂

"spewing crap buzzwords like "the beast" in hopes that you can gather as much esteem boosting "agrees" you can get."

Lol firstly, it's obvious how much that emotionally hurt you and secondly, if I wanted 'agrees I'd join the large human centipede of Sony fanboys on this site so when one shits the kind of cack logic youre spouting, the others do the talking. When has saying positive things about Xbox garnered mass agrees on this site? 🤣

Ron_Danger2403d ago (Edited 2403d ago )

What?? Where are getting these thoughts from? What's MS' fault here? Why did you say that?

Oh I get it!! You're doing the thing narcissist do where you try to confuse everyone around you by shotgun blasting a bunch of BS at everyone where somethings aren't as crazy as others so people jump on board even though everything is still crazy. Narcissists also always need the last word.

Good luck in the future man.

Gazondaily2403d ago

Are you actually thick ? You said you agreed with Ninsigma who said Xbox speeds are slower than PS. How can that be the case if it's not personal to people's connections ? 🙈

"Good luck in the future man."

Looks like you'll need that more than me.

And let this serve as a lesson to you not to make knee jerk reactions and throw accusations around last you look like a fool. Be prepared next time.

i posted these a month or so ago, same systems, same wifi, sitting right next to each other an OG Ps4 and a xbox ones

over wifi my xbox is 5 times faster

gangsta_red2403d ago (Edited 2403d ago )

In my experience the download speeds for PS4 has been very slow which is funny to see this topic being brought up because just last night my son was downloading Fortnight for PS4 and it took him damn near almost 84 minutes to DL. We were shocked at how long a lot of games dl compared to Xbox One.

Not a game changer but it was interesting to see it now brought up here.

@Septic

"Everyone around here knows how big an MS cheerleader you are."

That escalated quickly, too funny to see emotions run wild and to finally see the root cause of why some people seem so angry all the time.

chaos-emeralds2403d ago

Took me a day to download gtsport demo. That was shocking.

Gazondaily2403d ago

@gangsta

Haha i know right? Most of the people on this site are like this!

UnHoly_One2402d ago

I get about 1/10th the download speed on my PS as I do on my Xbox.

PS consoles have always been horrifically slow for whatever reason.

Google it, it's not just one or two people that experience this issue.

MecheSlays2403d ago

The download speeds are miles better on Xbox one. I get 2 to 3 mbps on ps4 whereas I get 15 mbps on Xbox one both while downloading games.

Gazondaily2403d ago

"4. DL Speeds: What?? PS4 speeds have been faster this gen. "

According to whom?

ninsigma2403d ago

My own experience with both.

Gazondaily2403d ago (Edited 2403d ago )

Ah okay so it's just your personal experience. Fair enough. You worded your first post as if it was fact but glad we got that clarified.

InTheZoneAC2403d ago

xbox controller analog sticks are vastly inferior

hold the controller sideways and you'd think they'd fall on their own, not to mention they use the same lower resolution potentiometers found in ps3 controllers.

ninsigma2403d ago

Gonna be honest I have no idea what a potentiometer is 😂 But agrees, the dualshock 4 is far better than the XBO controller.
