6 Months Without Big Launches Take Their Toll Xbox Sales in the USA Give Way to Competition

This year 2017 will be remembered by many as the year in which Microsoft has made more mistakes. The cancellation of Scalebound, the first AAA drought during the first 6 months of the year ... Luckily good things have arrived, such as Xbox Game Pass or the announcement of many games during E3.

However, the general perception remains negative. The balance of errors seems to have weighed and not even the price declines of Xbox One S have slowed down the inevitable. And is that the gap of sales between PS4 and Xbox is approaching a million difference in the USA in just over half a year, more than 890,000 consoles to be more accurate according to the NPD Group. In fact in July, Xbox is the fourth console below the Nintendo Switch.

I wouldn't call this gen shit since the PS4 is doing phenomenally well (crazy sales and games aplenty), as for the WiiU and the Xone, yeah, it's been pretty bad. Hopefully the Switch maintains it's momentum, unfortunately the XoneX won't change anything for the brand.

Dammit Microsoft, just pay a few developers to make you some exclusives, it's not like your sales are going to get any worse if you do (they certainly won't improve without a good reason though).

I just don't see any excitement over the Xbox brand this year, and even last was kind of a disappointment. When Sony had a scarce holiday, they still had a pretty decent year, but MS holiday this year is even more scarce, and they've had a terrible year, and so far, next year isn't looking any better.

@Bigpappy I agree with you about Xbone sales suffering since the announcement of Scorpio at E3 2016. But after E3 2017 that is not the case now. People were holding out until E3 to see if Scorpio would blow them away and the price would be great value at 399 at least, it didn't do either. Now that people know how much it is and the games that are coming to it and the next 6 months after, there is really no holding out needed anymore.

People who were on the fence would just get an Xbone now. Is playing a game like Crackdown 3 or State of Decay 2 at native 4K going to be worth double the price to them??? Not every likely.

Then you have the poor souls like darthv72 that are in denial so much they still think Microsoft are going to "flip a switch" and cut off 20 million gamers and make games just for the XboneX with its measly 2 million and less install base. He still even believes after that spec reveal earlier in the year and that sparse lineup of XboneX at E3 2017 that something mind blowing and game changing is going to happen, its so adorable. :)

Wii U was irrelevant long before it was discontinued due to lack of a consistent flow of new games. It didn't get prematurely discontinued for nothing.

You can't suddenly discredit multiplats entirely to fit an agenda, especially when Wii U's demise was largely attributed to lack of multiplats. And especially after newcomer Xbox was able to outsell GameCube(made by a longtime veteran of the industry) thanks to multiplats. And definitely not when 360 had a longer lifespan than Wii thanks to multiplats.

Yes exclusives are always important, but let's not play dumb and pretend that multiplats don't matter either. We can't have a double standard where multiplats matter when it comes to Nintendo consoles' frequent lack of them but say they aren't worth anything when it comes to Xbox consoles' abundance of them. Every kind of game matters to gamers. As a person who primarily plays on PlayStation consoles, I find it ridiculous to discredit either type of software.

Consider this, the people who already have Xbox One consoles, which is the entire point I am making and that many are neglecting, still have new compelling games consistently arriving on their console. Whether those games are exclusive or not is besides the point as long as the consumers of that product are frequently satiated.

Compare this to Wii U which throughout the majority of its lifespan went through many drought periods because it didn't receive as many multiplats and exclusives would only come out every so often.

You seem to be focused on why would someone buy an PS4 over an XO, and that answer is clearly obvious and doesn't need to be further discussed because it's beating a dead horse at this point. I'm talking specifically about people who decided to get an XO anyway and the library that the particular platform offers them.

Personally I'll always pick PS4, but if I were to somehow have an XO I'd have no problem finding a slew of new games to pick up for the console.

But nope, logically, your mind offseted to compare it to another failed to provide console. It's funny to see Switch accomplish much more in the same time span with similar power. Goes to show that it's a combination of many things than just having games or just having power.

I say this, if you want a much, much better Xbox experience, go the PC route. Starting with a 1050ti is fine, just make sure you have an open ended upgrade path. AM4 socket motherboards will be supported till 2020 and it's now cheap to get multi core CPUs with Ryzen. Got my 1600x 3.6Ghz 6 core for $230.

Otherwise, a PS4 would be the best alternative to gaming right now with it's plethora of already released high quality exclusives that come along the multiplats.

This holiday has some coming though, but the vast majority are just the yearly, or bi-yearly releases which we've come to expect, and tend to take up a bulk of the sales charts anyways.

It's true though, you don't see much excitement for the XoneX, even amongst my friends and people I know, hardly anyone talks about it. It's not exactly cheap, and then you need a decent 4k TV to take advantage of what the XoneX offers, that's a pretty expensive barrier to entry for most people. Hence it'll sell as well as the PS4 PRO at it's best, people need a compelling reason to invest in that eco system, especially at that price.

Last generation Sony committed hard to a spring, summer, and early fall release focus of their first party titles, getting out of the way of the big holiday 3rd party blitz entirely, and it has paid off amazingly well.

Their first party titles are selling better, especially the more niche ones, they keep interest levels in the platform up year round, and the big early year releases make great bundle fodder for the holidays.

I really am not seeing it. I'm certainly not experiencing it. I see the normal XBox fan boys going on about how great things are and how they're so excited with the same fervor they always have, despite the rather lackluster offerings of software from MS, and them trying to say that multi-plats is where it's at now.

It's not that MS doesn't have good things to offer, and some things to be excited about, but sales of Xbox seem to be down, indicating to me a decline in actual consumer interest. That only backs up my assertion.

It's worth noting that I was speaking generally, as there is some excitement, but it isn't what I'd say is widespread.

I was speaking of X1 in general, and if you were speaking of X1X, then I can say I only see the usual suspects really that excited for it.

Personally, I'm really disinterested in what they have to offer their core base at the moment. It upsets me because I brought into Xbox when I thought there was stuff to look forward to. Now that there isn't, I'm wondering what MS is doing with all their resources, because the bulk of their marketing seems centered around a new console, instead of following this notion that no gamer will be left behind. While they aren't leaving gamers behind on the software front, I don't really feel they're offering up much to satiate the gamers desires. I'm not going to give MS credit for the offerings of 3rd party games like many Xbox people do, when the competition is completely demolishing them in their own exclusive offerings. It seems like a double standard to do so. While I can overlook many transgressions when my overall needs are met, I can't really do the same when another company doesn't even seem to be trying to meet the needs of it's gamers. While I don't expect MS to cater specifically to me, I do expect them to do more than offer up a yearly forza and a couple mid-tier games for the year, and I expect them to keep me informed on what to expect in the future.

Apparently, MP games aren't selling on XBox either. Maybe they are, but just because SP games aren't selling on Xbox, doesn't mean they aren't selling elsewhere. You can go look at Amazon's best selling list for any part of the generation, and see that plenty of SP titles make the ranks. Maybe not as high as some of the bigger MP focused games in terms of raw numbers, but certainly nothing to scoff at.

I'm aware of what they have to offer based on what they've shown. I obviously can't judge what they say they won't show too early, so I can't be hyped about that given how very few of their hyped up games this gen have been remarkable.

Do you really think the mass market is so clueless on being able to determine what they want? MS has the largest marketing budget of any console maker, and spends more than the next two biggest gaming companies combined on their annual marketing. Somehow, I don't think awareness is their problem.

What's the marketing team going to do? MS major focus in marketing to the general public is indeed games. But they have such a narrow focus on which games they're going to promote through those routes that the stuff they're marketing is either not new and exciting to most, or it's just not that interesting at all. Marketing can't really make up for a deficiency of lack of content, and MS inability to actually have a vision expressed to relay to the customer what the system is all about.

Without a vision for the brand, and content to back it up, any change in marketing is just going to be another spin on their part to try and make perception into something they have no desire to achieved, and since that's how MS tends to operate across the board, I'd say their marketing team is doing fine, it's just Sony's is doing much better.

The only place I can see they need to shift focus is from CD3 to SoT. SoT is looking great, and it has a lot of potential to really capture a huge casual market, along with the core market if they do things right. CD3 looks like crap, won't really be that enticing to the mainstream, and realistically, I think it's going to bomb hard at launch and there's a huge possibility it won't be delivering on these cloud promises MS made which is only going to damage their reputation. MS is promoting CD3 like it were a Halo game, and they need to temper the expectations for it, and promote the game which is looking much better.

Did you forget Apple? Apple exists too, it's more expensive but people still buy that in droves and they're not exactly poor (then again, they have their hands on multiple things apart from OSs just like Microsoft does). And if you want to go that route, you can get some flavor of Linux (it's not as user friendly as Mac or Windows though). Those two can sell on brand name alone (although I would argue Windows is more functional than Mac), neither went big on marketing, especially in recent years.

Marketing won't help Xbox for a variety of reasons (games and negative stigma from it's initial announcement).

You are completely missing the point. It's a cumulative effect, there is no such thing as a system seller in my opinion, that is nothing more than a marketing expression to promote the HALO's, Gears, Mario's and Gran Turismo's of the world.

The fact is, for most gamers, a consoles library reaches a tipping point where it becomes impossible to ignore because there are several titles that make the purchase of that console worthwhile. Nobody was going to buy an Xbox because of Scalebound, just like someone didn't buy a PlayStation because of Gravity Rush 2. But add in another bunch of exclusives plus the promise of dozens and dozens more exclusives and the decision makes itself for you.

I want the SWITCH, desperately, but it gas 3 games I want to play and as such I haven't bought it yet. With Mario v Rabbids along with a new Mario I am now much more tempted, to the point where I think I will buy it this year when Xenoblade Chronicles comes out. I was set to buy one with Mario but I just can't quite justify it yet.

Very well said and especially on the library tipping point. I was in the same boat with the Switch but went ahead and pulled the trigger and got one about a month ago. It came with Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Splatoon 2. I too am looking forward to Mario V Rabbids and of course Mario Odyssey! I have like 50 games for the PS4 and will expand my Switch library as new releases come but at this point I don't even see any reason to buy the X or S. I still can't comprehend why the Xbox division can't grasp what we the consumers want. I agree completely, and moreso when Xbox Live on Windows 10 is free to play online, which is more fucked up and anti consumer practice against us the loyal Xbox fanbase. Exclusives not mattering must be a relatively new idea because I like a lot of my generation have been gaming since the early 80's and exclusives have always been part of the equation. As more and more companies came into the picture exclusives were what differentiated them apart from each other. As costs have risen I will admit that there are less exclusives now than there used to be but they are still a very important part of what sells a console. Third party titles fill out most of a gaming library but those games that can only be played on a certain console go along way in helping a consumer to open up their wallet as is evident in the numbers at which Sony's PS4 has been selling. Games like the God of War series, Gran Turismo, the Uncharted series, the upcoming Spider Man title are all massive system sellers and they are just the tip of the iceberg. Newer exclusives like Bloodborne, Persona 5 and Horizon Zero Dawn have sold tremendously well and when you factor in all the great third party titles that are out and coming along with those exclusives it really makes it easy to buy said system. Are games like Gravity Rush 2, Nioh, Until Dawn, The Last Guardian, Tales of Berseria, Nier Automata gonna do the same business? Well no but they are just the icing on the cake. Sorry to be so long winded I just don't understand how one can say "exclusives don't matter" as there is tons of evidence that says otherwise.

Its nuts that Sony is close to doubling Microsofts sales every month this year, so far. It will be interesting to see what effect the X will have and if Microsoft can manufacture enough of them to make up the difference. With the FCC thing taking as long as it did, Im wondering if that will also have any affect. I think their biggest hurdle is convincing gamers to go back and play through games theyve already beaten, to see the difference the X makes... since they will make up the majority of titles available for the X. Im guessing the majority of people buying the X will be current owners of the Xbox One console, tech junkies and Playstation gamers wondering what the difference will be.

If these numbers do anything, they should knock on someone in corporates door and change their mind about their stance on exclusive first party titles. Its pretty obvious they have an affect on console sales.

Starting a new generation after only four years is very risky although Nintendo has done exactly that with the Switch and so far it has paid off but the proof of success is two to three years of respectable sales. I pity the WiiU owners who will have some quite good games over the four years period but nothing going forward.

Actually, the biggest competitor to the XB1x will be the XB1s which by November 2017 will be around $200 to $250 USD cheaper and will most likely come with pack-in games. Of course, the PS4s will be competitive with the XB1s and the PS4pro will be anything between $50 to $100 USD dearer than the PS4s.

Sure, the XB1x will sell but how many with respect to the XB1s that would be interesting but I doubt we will get exact figures from Microsoft.

Preference of a controller is subjective and everyone is entitled to their opinion. Of course, people are also entitled to disagree.

It may come as a surprise to you but the PS4 has had voice recognition from inception all you had to do was plug in your mono head phone (came in the box) to your controller. If you purchased a camera it supports face recognition although it is by far simpler to put a password on your account (essential if you have a PS+ account) and login via the controller since you are going to have to use the controller to play a game unless you have a game that is only controlled via motion detection.

It takes me about two seconds to log in on my PS4 which is password protected and about one second to start my last game (ie. Right, Down, X). As for TV I play games with my PS4 not watch TV although when I start my PS4 my TV will select the HDMI port the PS4 is on and switch back when I have finished playing.

I do agree that the "Scorpio" was a much better name than XB1x which IMHO is going to confuse the buying public (assuming they want the XBox brand) especially since the XB1s will be anything from $200 to $250 USD cheaper and have some pack-in games to sweeten the deal.

So let's get some facts straight, Xbox is not 'better' in the most important aspect games! You do know it's called a 'videogame' console right ?Features should be secondary after you do the big primary thing, get better games. I bought my game system to play games. Xbox has done a terrible job with this. The delays further prove they have no idea how to schedule their development. I have only used my Xbox twice in the last 6 months!

Xbox has loads of games. But not loads of exclusives. There's a difference. I dont even own a Xbox and even I know the features and services on Xbox is better then what I got on my PS4Pro.

PSN is way more unstable and slower then XBL. PSNOW is streaming trash and expensive compared to GamePass. EA Access is awesome and something Sony did not want to compete with PSNOW. And soon the refund system will be in place like on Steam. Giving gamers great consumer rights. Games downloaded with GOLD are yours to keep even after you stop subbing. Unlike PS+. PlayAnywhere for those that also play on PC.

And now in just some months Xbox will take the performance overhead PS4 has had since launch and after the PS4Pro came out away.

All in all making XBOX and Xbox One X a better system in all ways. Except as I mentioned when it comes to exclusive games.

Many buy a PC for better services,features and power. Soon all of this is available for those who want it but dont want to leave the Xbox ecosystem and transition to PC.

Sorry EA Access is okay, but, I hate EA games so its 'value' isn't there. Have had ZERO problems with PSN. Xbox Live while a good service makes no difference to me as only 2 of my friends play Xbox, so no its not significantly different. Downloads on Xbox fast? Yeah not in my experience, its slow and you can't even play games while it updates which is ridiculous. Games with Gold has been garbage lately. As for gaming on Xbox? Got one it would be great if I had it on more than twice this year. Even the Switch is more entertaining than Xbox.

MS is flying by the seat of their pants. They are so unprepared its hilarious. I doubt most companies will bother with true 4k even. Checkerboarding is likely going to be the status quo unless sales of the X blisters.

As for the sales angle you keep bringing up? Yeah 'better' is proved right there in the sales. The Xbox S has been giving away far more free games and has dropped the price to compete. Yet regardless of what MS does, they can't stop PS4. Up till the last couple months for example, my store still had Xbox stock from Christmas still around. In that time we've gone through pallets of PS4's. Considering we are the busiest store in the city that's significant. NPD and Worldwide sales have consistently proved this too in BOTH hardware and software. If you think the X is going to change anything you are delusional. On the lack of big exclusives, Xbox has focused too much on backwards compatibility trying to sell it like the ultimate feature. Backwards compability is just a good to have and it cannot be your main business strategy.

Xbox one x may have a good 2 or 3 first months of good sales by people who are hardcore Xbox fans. After that, the momentum will go down.

The PS3 resurrected thanks to a focus on exclusives games and not by introducing a more powerful PS3 console. Xbox will learn that the hard way as power alone is not the key.

People are waiting on the Xbox One X. That's my hypothesis. I wouldn't judge MS on console sales until their flagship console is released. After the console is released, they'll be the usual spike in sales, however I do wonder how long MS will have the top selling console, or at least number two selling console. Especially considering they'd have the highest priced console on the market at that time. Also I think MS is smart not to release any AAA games until the Xbox One X releases. They need to show games running on the One X, with enhanced visuals, if the games have already been released and played, then there's no need for to replay them on the new console. Finally, to boost sales, I hope there're some good trade in deals are offered; this is most likely the only thing MS or retailers could do to get me to purchase a Xbox One X.

While true not many exclusives this year for XB1, article is also a little unfair. Sales have dropped of considerably due to people waiting to see what the XB1X is all about, before purchasing XB1X, XBs, or completely go in the other direction entirely PS4s, Pro or Switch. We saw this happen with PS4 when Pro was announced with launch window, PS4 sales dropped, even to the point where XB1 was selling more than the PS4 for two months at least. But having not many exclusives against the onslaught of PS4 exclusives does not help either after the launch of XB1X. People will reevaluate their purchases and it is not going to go in MS favor.

How much is a Xbox One S these days? About £200/$250 how much is the XOX £450/$500. You have your answer why people would buy an XBO over an XOX. £200/$250 saving if you get an XBO. Not everyone needs extra power you know. Hence why a lot of people buy PS4 Slim over a PS4 Pro.

For $500 you can buy a PS4 Slim and a Xbox One S. Or for an extra $50 get a PS4 Pro and a XOX.

I don't get Microsoft at all. Am starting to believe they don't have as much money as people make out (the game division not Microsoft in general). Just 2 years ago people where banging on about how Sony are dying and there on the last legs ect. It's crazy how Microsoft is handling Xbox software wise. Pre E3 I thought maybe they would show off some cool exclusives for their system but as it is I went ahead and bought a Switch last month that came with Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. At this juncture the Switch has more games coming that interest me than what Microsoft has on offer. At this point I feel like I'm covered with my Pro and the Switch.
