PlayStation 4 firmware update 5.0 will add 1080p60 Twitch streaming [for Pro users]

Sony has yet to detail the update itself, but Eurogamer has obtained a copy of the update's release notes. Other top-line changes include an overhaul of your console's master/sub account system, the ability to follow any user, and the addition of notifications to the PS4's quick menu.

Twitch streaming at 1080p 60fps will be limited to those with the 5.0 firmware update using a PlayStation 4 Pro. You can already use a Pro for 1080p Remote Play and Share Play.

that sounds dissapointing but from what i heard this list of features (which is still not the official one) only contain the additions that devs need to know about. for example features like systemwide SS or ps1&2 BC won't be written here (not saying any of these are really in the update)

BC games have nothing to do with firmware. That's like saying every game on PS4 needs an update after every major firmware update. That's not how Software works.

Notorius That's ignorant and you know it. 360 to Xbone is like running a program in winblows 10 in win7 mode. PS3 to PS4 is a linux program on Windows.

@NotoriousWhiz: Because of the support of other features for the BC titles, such as streaming, sharing, etc.. Not to play the old games on new console, that's all handled by encapsulated software similar to what GOG does with old games on new PCs. It's also why all BC games must be downloaded.

Change it so you can switch between the full box with text as it is now or just a small square with the icon for the notification (message icon, trophy image icon, etc.).

Changing colors or transparency will never make it perfect from one thing to the next. Best to just give options on how much is shown.

I also hope we can shorten the time they are displayed. WHen I take a screenshot. The notification is up there for about 30 seconds. I want it there but not that long. I take a lot of screens lol. It's a nitpick I know. The black was cooler for trophies. They should bring it back or like you say let us custom color it. Maybe when I buy Bloodborne I want to see hot pink notifications. :P

If that's all 5.0 is set to do that's just terrible for a X.0 update. You'd think Twitch would simply need an update on PS4 Pro to do 1080/60 support, not a whole system update which is usually reserved for much larger features.

They have to reallocate memory for the 60fps streaming ability. It doesn't require a major update, but has nothing to do with twitch as it does memory management.

If they're reallocating resources to make it work beyond the 1GB the Pro already offers they're effectively removing resources for games as there's already a reserve on both PS4 & Pro.

I'd also say exactly, it "doesn't require a major update" yet Sony is using a major update to deliver 1080/60 streaming ability. That kind of states exactly what I did.

If nothing else is being delivered, namely to base PS4 units where next to nothing would be delivered as the streaming ability is highlighted as a Pro feature, 5.0 is going to be some absolute crap compared to what other X.0 updates have delivered.

That is for all OS functions, including streaming. They have to maximize memory by controlling how much something else uses too give enough for capturing, processing, and sending live steam data at 60 fps. And they have to do this is a way that allows them to continue to develop in parallel for the PS4 and Pro without causing memory issues. It's all a lot of interacting elements that have to be tracked and ensured they work when needed and then leave enough for twitch streaming.

To be honest, that last part is what I'm most worried about as I've noticed more delay in my PS4 UI at times and this has the potential to increase that.

OK, serious question. This isn't "platform specific". I'm 47, so as a gamer I guess I would be considered old. I have been playing since the Atari 2600 days. Do people really watch other strangers play games via a live feed? I mean, is it actually popular? What is the appeal? I personally don't see how that's any more enjoyable than looking at someone else's vacation photos.

I'm not that much younger than you, and I occasionally watch streamers. sometimes it's a game I am interesting in seeing some gameplay before I pull the trigger on purchasing. I also used to watch friends play games when I was growing up, so watching streaming is sort of like that for me.
