Seriously Nintendo, Where Was The Detail?

For all the excitement around the Nintendo Switch console, it seems that we're left lacking finer details about key services and the launch period.

Very confusing. From what I have read it will have a Tegra x1 chip. The display is 720p. The controller is 70 dollars. Battery life will be between 2 to 3 hours. So 370 dollars if you want to use it like a console "that has mobile graphics".

Edit: Appears it does come with a dock. You would only need to pay the 90 dollars if you have a second tv you wanted to connect it to.

FunAndGun2660d ago (Edited 2660d ago )

Are you saying it doesn't come with the dock for $300?

Erik73572660d ago (Edited 2660d ago )

It's 50 dollars more expensive than a ps4/xbox one......are people really that stupid to think it will have a tegra x1?

I really want this rumour to die, from a business stand point and a technical standpoint it is just ridiculous.
First lets look at the timelines involved. Nvidia announced the Tegra X1 in March 2015 and released the shield tv in May 2015, Nvidia were probably manufacturing these chips a few months in advance so lets assume that manufacturing started in March 2015.
Now it makes sense that early dev kits would contain this chip, early reports on the dev kits also state the fan was very noisy, doesn't sound great for a mobile device does it? Nintendo would of most likely been looking to several companies, explaining their requirements, then it would of been up to the companies to win the contract. Nvidia would of already started research into the next iteration of tegra before the x1 was even announced, this is how business works, you have to keep moving to stay competitive.

Now with the timeline out of the way lets look at what is important when manufacturing a mobile device. There are three factors, Size, Power Consumption and Heat. Performance is important but performance is limited by the three factors described.
Lets have a look at how a 20nm Maxwell chip performs in comparison to a possible 16nm variant in these three categories.
Power consumption.
This one is easy, lets go to the website of the company actually handling the manufacturing for these figures.
http://www.tsmc.com/english...
"Comparing with 20SoC technology, 16FF+ provides extra 40% higher speed and 60% power saving."
So a pascal tegra would be 60% more power efficient in theory, why would Nintendo use a maxwell chip?
Moving on to heat, the article by venturebeat says that pascal runs too hot to be used in a mobile chip. So lets look at the thermal performance of Pascal.
http://www.anandtech.com/sh...
We can see here clearly that the gtx 1080 runs 2 degrees hotter but gives 80% more performance. A 2 degree increase over an 80 degree operating temperature is an increase of only 2.5%, for 80% extra performance. Therefore it is safe to assume pascal also runs cooler. Thats another tick in the box for pascal. Though this should of been assumed anyway looking a tthe power consumption piece above, as these two are linked.
Now the final piece of the puzzle is die size, when making a mobile chip this is very important as a manufacturer will try and squeeze as much as possible onto a tiny PCB. Again I will use the GTX 1080 vs 980 as a comparison.
http://www.pcworld.com/arti...
In the attached we can see the difference between the two cards, the 1080 takes up 314mm2 with 2560 CUDA cores, the 980 takes up 398mm2 with 2048 CUDA cores. I estimate the tegra chip in the Switch has 512 CUDA cores and clocks very low in portable mode so lets use this as a point of reference.
2560/512 = 5, 2048/512 = 4
So to compare a 512 CUDA core chip on each process we have.
16nm Pascal - 314mm / 5 = 62.8mm2
28nm Maxwell - 398mm/4 = 99.5mm2
Quite a difference huh? The problem is the maxwell tegra would be a 20nm chip so the die shrink would not be so drastic but we can also calculate the size of this chip by looking at the difference. 20nm - 16nm is a 4nm movement, 28 - 16 is 12nm movement. 4nm is 33% of 12nm so.
(99.5 - 62.8)/3 = 12.23mm2

ABizzel12660d ago (Edited 2660d ago )

$300 for the bundle
$40 for 128GB microSD for download storage (games are getting bigger)
$60 for games

Puts you at $400 off top. If you want the pro controller that $70.

This has Vita written all over it for the West at least.

@Erik7357

If they wanted that rumor to die, they should have ended it today and reveal the spces for the Tegra processor it's using since they revealed just about everything else hardware wise.

KimikoGaming2660d ago

Comes with the dock and controller. Battery life will be between 2.5-6.5 hours depending on the game and whether you are playing with max volume and online or not. They made that stuff clear during the presentation.

FunAndGun2660d ago (Edited 2660d ago )

So for $300 you get the tablet part, the dock, the joy controllers and a standard controller? Or do you have to buy the pro standard controller separate?

Thanks Vegamyster

maybelovehate2660d ago (Edited 2660d ago )

You are right it does come with the dock. I don't think it comes with the console controller though. Doesn't list it. As for the battery life, they are saying a game like Zelda will get 3 hours.

Vegamyster2660d ago

FunAndGun

Pro controller is separate, it also includes a attachment for the joycon controllers that add bumpers so you have two controllers for games like Mario Kart.

TenkoTAiLS2660d ago

The Nintendo Switch box specs will include the main console, Joy-Con (L) and Joy-Con (R) controllers, a Joy-Con grip (to which two Joy-Con are attached and used as one standard controller), a set of two Joy-Con wrist straps, a Nintendo Switch dock (which holds the main console and connects it to a TV), a HDMI cable and an AC adapter. Two versions of the console will be released: a version with a set of grey Joy-Con, and a version with one neon blue and one neon red Joy-Con.

Everything you need to play like a home console is in the box. Unless the full controller made from the two Joy-Con units connecting to the controller base isn't sufficient for you, then you will want that Pro-Controller yes.

maybelovehate2660d ago

Kind of funny they call it a pro controller. It is just a normal controller.

Battery life 2-3hours wow lol and no console controller epic fail

EddieNX 2660d ago

You get a joycon with the console, so you don't have to buy a spare.

Erik73572660d ago (Edited 2660d ago )

Tegra x1 was based off old leak and old dev kit but whatever dude

It's 50 dollars more expensive than a ps4/xbox one......are people really that stupid to think it will have a tegra x1?

I really want this rumour to die, from a business stand point and a technical standpoint it is just rediculous.

maybelovehate2660d ago

Do we know that Digital Foundry and Eurogamer are 100% right? No, but it seems that we know what the actual speeds will be. Even if they are using X2 it will be running more at an x1 level based on what has been examined

Wallstreet372660d ago

Fight that good fight but the presentation was rubbish and that price point is too much for the weak hardware they are offering and now paid online. 200 would gave been fair given we know Nintendo hides specs bcus they know ppl will be upset about the hardware.

Nintendo being Nintendo smfh. Keep on fighting soldier Reggie is pround of you lol

rdgneoz32660d ago

It should come with the dock in the bundle and 1 controller as well. If you wanted a 2nd dock or your first dock, then you'd be another (if your warranty is expired). Though like every other console, if you want to play 2 player couch co-op, you'll need a 2nd controller. The battery life though is pretty crappy.

Gemmol2660d ago

specs digital foundry and other gave was specs of July Dev Kit, I am pretty sure you a troll because you love for that to be the spec......the dev kit they gave in October said that it was much stronger, and none of the smaller developers have it, so the specs were not leaked for October dev kit yet

hirobrotagonist2660d ago

I absolutely does not have "mobile graphics"

maybelovehate2660d ago

It is confirmed to use Tegra chip, mobile gpu. I mean it is a mobile device lol. Graphics look very dated. I feel sad for Zelda devs being held back

Articuno762659d ago (Edited 2659d ago )

The slot-in controller comes in the box, you don't have to spend an extra $70 to use it as a console. They had a segment where they went over everything one by one (down to AC adapter and HDMI cable) and showed that.

By slot-in controller I mean this thing (not the Pro controller):
http://i.kinja-img.com/gawk...

But you aren't the only person who's been misinformed on this. I've come across this misunderstanding repeatedly today, so perhaps Nintendo's messaging in that area needs work.

The presentation made me cringed at times especially in the beginning with those two games 1, 2 Switch! and Arms. Like nobody asked for those. It felt like the Wii all over again for a bit there

eagle212660d ago

It did, but Arms looks fun for family. I liked Zelda myself. lol

Summons752660d ago

1 2 switch is a fun party game and so is Arms. Only cringe part was EA getting up and being boring as usual.

Lonnie182660d ago

Nope nobody asked for gimmick games lol.

EmperorDalek2660d ago

Yeah why the hell does EA think anyone cares about Fifa on the Switch?

Wallstreet372660d ago

No the presentation was cringe worthy and Nintendo being Nintendo. Switch is too much and of course Nintendo hiding specs bcus they don't want consumers to know they are buying weak hardware compared to competition.

OzzY-waZZy2659d ago

@Summons75

Jesus man, when did you become this Nintendrone? I don't recall you being on that monkeyman level. Call it for what it is, 1-2 switch is a complete BS phone app with a $50 price tag... Arms could be fun if it has that Rocket League depth. Stop this damage control. I want it to flop, so it can be reasonably priced. Then maybe it would be easier to jump on board.

They trying for a gimmick again, this is the Nintendo gimmick box!

RosweeSon2660d ago

Get back in your box. Cardboard.

Irishguy952660d ago

Did you see the Wii sales figures? A gimmick here or there is fine just ask Sony with move

bolimekurac2660d ago

you are right, this isnt the wii gimmick, this is trying to replicate some of the wii features but trying to sell it to 20 something year olds. it just doesnt come off right at all.

Legion212660d ago

I was hoping to see them return to a more traditional console, with a traditional controller. Then release 2-3 big Nintendo IPs at launch like, Zelda, Mario, and Metroid. Nintendo at this point is trying to hard to cater to the family setting. Not every game needs to be cutesy

Totally agree, Nintendo is so utterly out of touch that the meme material was flying left, right and centre. Stuff like "share the joy" and the incredibly odd lead designer showing us that the joy con allows us to "feel" if it has 1,2 or 3 blocks of ice in a glass...umm huh?? Very disappointed in everything other than Zelda obviously but after tax and after buying the game - $400 is an absurd amount to spend on a system that is already looking like it's lacking any real games until next Christmas. Wow Ninty, I had real hope this time too.

light692660d ago

Dude the point of the ice example was to explain the new feature it has, I believe they called it hd rumble feed back, this is a game changer, if you can feel differences with in the game by using the controller as that sensor that opens up world of possibilities, just like n64 introduced the widely used rumble feature for feed back. Please don't post shit like this it's getting sad and annoying hearing bitching from people that think they know gaming. No one is forcing you to give your opinion soooo there's the log off button

NotoriousWhiz2660d ago

@light

"No one is forcing you to give your opinion soooo there's the log off button"

Lol

conanlifts2660d ago

I actually thought 1, 2 switch looked fun. Gimmicky but fun. My issue is only 2 games confirmed for launch, and then a few more for the rest of the year. Most are 2018-2019. I can't believe how many games were talked about without footage.

maniacmayhem2659d ago

It's funny to read how people say what they never asked for. Exactly what did you know before hand to even ask?

299$ for a mobile tech! I'm just sayin.
(ESL guy here.)

EddieNX 2660d ago

Nvidia Tegra is cutting edge mobile tech bud.

_-EDMIX-_2660d ago

Regardless of how they're trying to Market this it is still there portable and I think maybe 249 would have been The Sweet Spot.

I'm completely fine with 299 though

EddieNX 2660d ago (Edited 2660d ago )

Yh its £280 here on Amazon £250 would be sweetspot... Still going GAME to pre order one with Zelda today.

@wallstreet, Nvidia tegra chips are industry leading mobile chips, cutting edge. Am I wrong? They're not cheap, you expect it to have the same specs as PS4 even though its a small, portable tablet.

Wallstreet372660d ago (Edited 2660d ago )

Just stop it cutting edge my %ss. They are once again selling a weaker console at a premium price and hiding specs as to not alarm consumers.

Embarrassing!!!

You die hards never give up and put a positive spin on everything.

And yeah we know you would prefer order even if it was 500 lol your obsession wouldn't allow you to do otherwise. This systems looks to be medoliocre at best. What a shame. It should be 200 to 250 no more.

NextGenCeo2660d ago

I know that but 249$ was really good price. i was expecting 199$ and 249$ 2 sku's from Nintendo but they did not.
32GB good for starter but i really like to see HDD support over USB 3.0 port. But problem is i check Nintendo webside images and i saw 2 USB 2.0 ports and 1 Blue USB port but doesn't call the USB 3.0 port it was writing just "USB port" on the back.

Blue USB port means USB 3.0 i know but ı still have concern for that. Because i have already 500GB 7200RPM USB 3.0 2.5 inc hdd case at home. I stiil keeping for Nintendo Switch :) And yes i'm getting day one i'm looking amazon.com pre order evey hour i'm checking right now :D
(ESL guy here so sorry for English)

Light....

Here comes the Nintendo aka Reggie defender to shine the force and convince us this garbage is worth the purchase price lol

IMA give you some advice.... Hop off and I don't like stalkers. The presentation was trash and the system is over priced. Its not about specs but also offering new software and diversifying. Thankfully we have Sony covering all front:)

Hmmmm I wasnt planning to buy it you say? I actually have it preordered on Amazon just in case, total came out yo 326 which is way too high but I did it just in case a miracle happens to change my mind. Mind you I also own a Wiiu and if you don't believe me pm me and I'll give you my son and dustvit off (have used it a total of like five times and it was a waste of money).

Not everyone is a blind fanatic. I owe no allegiance to a console manufacturer and if anyone of them continuously screw up I'll drop them fast. This weird allegiance ppl have to Consoles of choice or companies like Nintendo is odd.

Considering people pay triple that for mobile tech seems like a good price point.

badz1492660d ago

you honestly just compared the Switch to a mobile phone?

Gemmol2660d ago

show me a handheld better

MRMagoo1232660d ago

so when do you think their console will come out then? cos a handheld isn't a home console.

Wallstreet372660d ago

Its coming out years after vita and no one else makes handhelds lol how would you find a better one. Its a console first and foremost, a weak one at that and the handheld power is what is expected after vita released many years ago and was powerful. For a portable it's in line with what's expected but not awe inspiring lol

Protagonist2660d ago

@Gemmol

So it is a handheld now... funny because it seems most nintendrones argues it is a console "than can go portable"... make up your damn mind.

ABizzel12660d ago (Edited 2660d ago )

Truly depends on what you mean by better, and what you deny us from using for comparisons sake as your counter argument will either say "The Switch cost less", or "it's a phone not a handheld", or some other reasoning, because I can list several that are better.

The selling point here once again is Nintendo's first party, but at $300 for the hardware, practically required additional storage space ($40 for 128GB), $60 per game, and if you want the pro controller $70 on top of that, puts you at $470 for Switch, Zelda, a modest amount of storage space, and a better Pro Controller to play it on your HDTV. $470 + your subscription service for online gaming.

At $300 I can find plenty of mobile devices that game much better.

At $500 I can find plenty of mobile devices that have significantly better hardware, and game much better.

£279 in the UK ($340usd)

pcz2660d ago

it is the wiiu all over again.

too expensive, too little software. nintendo have learnt nothing.

mario- great
zelda- great
xenoblade- fantastic.

but am i going to fork out 300+ for those games alone. zero chance.

nintendo blew it again.

ABizzel12660d ago

I sadly have to agree. And once you factor in the extra memory needed for downloading games, the Pro Controller for better controls you're up to $410, then $60 for AAA games, and a paid subscription service. I just can't.

Articuno762659d ago

Yep. No way they'll have any other games other than that over the entirety of its lifetime :P

Come on, guys, get real. That's a bigger exclusive line-up than most systems have in their first year. The PS4 went ages before it even had an exclusive worth getting excited for.

CDbiggen2660d ago

£279, with no game included...
It needed something like wii sports at the very least.

ABizzel12660d ago

It needs a price cut Day 1 with 1 / 2 switch bundled in.

Concertoine2659d ago

@abizzel

It seems massively dumb to not have 1-2 Switch bundled. They described it as an icebreaker for people wanting to get a Switch, and weird party games like that arent big sellers anyway. Just stick in the 299 bundle, it'll win over some casuals. Then have a fancy looking zelda variant with 1-2 Switch and Zelda for 349.

bluefox7552660d ago

Was a bit disappointing. They didn't really show a whole lot that we didn't already know, revealed almost nothing regarding specs, battery life seems pretty lackluster, and the 3rd party reveals were pretty limited as well. Also, I couldn't believe they're trying to push motion controls AGAIN, lol.

Articuno762659d ago

Where you expecting some kind of detailed spec readout?

Sony and Microsoft don't even do that anymore (only sharing the broadest details), and Nintendo hasn't for two entire generations.
