Xbox defends E3 line-up: 'We wanted to show games people can buy soon'

Microsoft has explained its decision to reveal just a handful of games at last month’s E3 games show.

The firm showed new trailers for a series of previously announced titles at E3, while the new game surprises at the show came in the form of Dead Rising 4, the expected Forza Horizon 3 and State of Decay II.

Automatic792873d ago (Edited 2873d ago )

No need to defend fantastic lineup with Inside, We Happy few, Cuphead, Below, Recore, Forza Horizon 3, Gears of War 4, Dead Rising 4. I can't wait to play.

christocolus2873d ago (Edited 2872d ago )

I'm going to be broke cos I plan to get all those games including cuphead and we have Sea of thieves, Ashen , Crackdown 3, Scalebound and Halo Wars 2 all releasing first quarter next year. my wallet will cry.

Abash2873d ago

The criticism of MS's games line-up at E3 is that there was no new game announcement that made people flip out the way God of War PS4, Days Gone, Spider-Man PS4, and Zelda: Breath of the Wild did.

freshslicepizza2873d ago

@Abash

zelda was shown for multiple years, not sure how that is a new announcement. forza horizon 3 was a new announcement and it looks fantastic but i think ms could have shown more games they are working on. maybe the next game show they will.

the fact is no matter what ms does they get blasted by forum members. the prior 2 years before this e3 it was all about game after game at e3. did everyone come to the consensus it was a great e3 for them? no, you will always have your anti-ms/xbox vocal group out there.

oh and sea of thieves looks awesome, great to see rare back.

Tobsesan2872d ago

@Shin-Zantetsuken

Funny because MS didnt show Scalebound, Crackdown 3, Fable Legends, Phantom Dust, We Happy Few this and last year.
They showed us great new games like Forza Horizon 3, Dead Rising 4 and State of Decay 2 which all are coming withing 1 year time. They showed us games the past 3 E3 shows GAME AFTER GAME AFTER GAME. Now they show hardware and everybody blames them?

Like last year they show games coming in the near future at E3 and games far off at Gamescom.

DragonKnight2872d ago

@Tobsesan: That's because they showed those games in previous years. Are you saying it's ok to skip an E3 so that you don't have to show anything new at the next one?

AngelicIceDiamond2872d ago

@Abash so I've been yelling new ip's for a while. At the moment MS has a decent slate of games all we need now are release dates/windows for them now. Next E3 MS will show new Ip's but for now I'm actually content they've done they're share of games showcases, for the time being anyway. Side note they're re-releasing Phantom Dust next year so I'll be busy with that personally.

There's always "criticisms" surrounding MS around here. No there's nothing wrong with what MS is doing ppl again and again complain because they don't like the company and the console that's it. I'm right and I know I'm right no amount of downvotes can't change that unless you can come up with a compelling argument or a high quality debate. None fans of said platform will always complain which is stupid because they never planning on buying the console.

God Of War look phenomenal, I don't think Days Gone WOW'ed ppl but it looked ok, Spiderman, yes and yes, Zelda look phenomenal also.

UltimateMaster2872d ago (Edited 2871d ago )

I do agree with that approach.

TheCommentator2872d ago

Shin, tell us how you really feel. Sony shows games we won't see for years and they get wild applause. Last Guardian, Final Fantasy 7, Shenmue 3 (kickstarter??? WTF, can't take the risk and fund it like MS did with Tomb Raider and Dead Rising 4?), etc. And who's pretending? MS did only show games at this year's E3 that are coming out soon. If they wanted to, they could have shown any one of the more than dozen unannounced games currently in development.

XanderZane2872d ago

Yeah, I'm getting all of those as well. I do wish they showed some new IP's, but that will probably happen at GamesCom. Didn't think their conference was the greatest, but Sony's conference wasn't a whole lot better either. They have a ton of games, but just didn't so many. Think both companies are spreading their games among 3-4 different shows.

Bruh2872d ago

@Shin
LOL oh man fanboys gone into rage mode. " They've been showing the same game for the past 3 years"

Last I checked E3 2014 didn't have Sea of Thieves, DR4, FH3, Gears 4 and so on. Yes a lot of the games were from last year's announcements however cut the exaggeration as you just look like a tool. They aren't trying to spin anything, they're attempting to show games that'll come out in the near future, mostly because they've had a dry season for the year thus far and E3 is the prime time to highlight games on their system coming soon. Not to mention Xbox had WAY more game floor demos than Nintendo and Sony.

zeuanimals2872d ago

Sorry, I don't know about you guys, but I watch E3, not to know when things that are releasing this year are releasing, but to get hyped about things in the future with spectacle and bombs being dropped so my jaw can also drop.

We're all on N4G for crying out loud, do we really need the biggest gaming conference devoted to telling us about this stuff when we routinely get release date announcements through other means? Or am I wrong and this isn't a gaming news site where all of that stuff is posted almost daily?

showtimefolks2872d ago

christocolus

do you also believe in fairies? because that's the only way all those games will come out q1 2017. ms like to push their games to holiday window in hopes of dominating the busiest time of the year

come on ms stop this nonsense. buy soon just like how you showed QB for 3 e3's or crackdown 3 and scalebound? please stop it. only in minds of xbox fanboys ms only showed games that are coming soon just like scorpio is coming soon

both ms and sony show games which are sometimes years away and sometimes they do show games which will be out in 12-18 month window

crackdown 3
scalebound
halo wars 2
horizon
spiderman
detroit become human

these are the exclusives we can expect to come out before fall 2017

how about ms learns to release games all year instead of focusing on last 3-4 months which they end up losing anyway to ps4

2872d ago
christocolus2872d ago (Edited 2872d ago )

@Showtime

Lol... Pls keep your BS on your side of the fence. Why should I or any Xbox owner take anything you say seriously? One look at your history shows all sorts of bias against MS. What's it to you if these games get delayed or not? You don't own the console and you are clearly biased. For now all those games are slated to release first quarter next year (with the exception of crackdown3) and I'm sticking with to that.

Deal with it bro.

Yes. This is the best lineup of the big 3 this year

We also know when most of these games will release or at least know a time frame

iDadio2873d ago

The best lineup haha, I hope you are not being serious. This year I have moved to PC mainly but as an avid gamer I always watch E3 and the MS show games wise was poor.
We already know about Gears
Forza has become a yearly milk factory
Dead Rising 4 is meh, may pick it up on PC

Out of all of them, Sea of Thieves peaked the most interest for me in what was a dire showing, what's coming out beyond the next 12 months to get excited about?

2873d ago
TwoForce2873d ago

I don't know about that.

donthate2873d ago

I agree.

Ironically, Sony showed Last Guardian, wowed everyone, and then completely silence. That was in 2009. Now we finally get it, the game skipped a generation, which by the way was the longest console generation ever, and finally release in 2016, almost a decade after.

No release window?

Yeah, that game can release in 3-years or it can release in 10-years. Sony even showed the Kojima project already, and although I'm excited, we know we are going to get a clip for the next four E3's before it is released, maybe even five!

I prefer the new format, and the shorter the amount of time the better. I loved it when Bethesda announced FO4, and released like 4-5 months later. Loved it! That is how it should be!!!

Don't string me along, don't BS me.

P_Bomb2872d ago (Edited 2872d ago )

@donthate
Yeah they do that on PlayStation too. LBP3 and GT6 did that at E3 the other year, releasing a few months later. GT Sport did earlier this year, followed by the VR Batman and RE7 reveals at E3.

But no by all means jump on The Last Guardian bandwagon. Unlike FO4 and the other sequelitis sallys that companies pump out like clockwork, I prefer pulling for the new IP.

Cohagen4202872d ago

Yup, they have the GOTY in their lineup, oh wait..

wolokowoh2872d ago

This holiday season. Not this year. Not for next year. They about even for big exclusives this year. I'm not going to count indie exclusives or JRPGs (except first party like GR2) or remasters here. Quite frankly this would give Sony the obvious advantage because of exclusive JRPGs alone. Also, the Witness, enough said.

Sony had more exclusives in the first half of the year. In the first half, Microsoft had Quantum Break which was great and that's it. Sony had Uncharted 4 which is at least equivalent what Gears 4 will be. U4: better story, great multiplayer, shooting mechanics not as good as Gears. What we expect of Gears 4: the shooting mechanics to be great, the story will be eeh as always, multiplayer will hopefully be great. Street Fighter V was exclusive and its great despite the obvious flaws. Ratchet and Clank was another amazing entry in the series. So in the first half Sony had three notable games all great to Microsoft one great game.

However looking at the whole year they have six a piece. Go into the holiday Sony has another three: Gr2, GT:Sport, and The Last Guardian. All are Japanese first party. All of these are safe bets to be good to great games. For the rest of the year Microsoft has five Halo Wars 2, Sea of Thieves, Forza Horizon, ReCore and Gears 4 . Forza trumps this years GT easily. I don't dispute this. Like said earlier, Gears 4 would Microsoft's best answer to U4. It'll be tough to make the equivalency argument because they are different but I'll go off quality. Ratchet and Quantum Break would be around the same quality for me. Both were great but not the next level up. Sea of Thieves, and this assuming its good, would be a great multiplayer game with friends. I'd say that is what SFV was so I'd say that makes in the same ballpark. The problem with is the rest of these. Halo Wars 2 will be great so will Gravity Rush. You can't really compare those even in quality because of subjectivity involving the genre interest person to person and we only have one previous entry on both of those. They're not proven franchises yet but I expect both to be great but not next level.

Now we're down to The Last Guardian and ReCore. My reason for comparing these two: Both involves puzzles and are Japanese. From what we've seen I'd go The Last Guardian but there is reason to doubt both. The Last Guardian was in development hell and Inafune just released Might No. 9 which was well..not great. However, there is so many things we don't know with ReCore. How involved is Inafune? Is it better or worse for having him not as involved? One of the studios working on ReCore is different than that working on the aforementioned MM No. 9. How does that affect its quality for better or worse? The only games Team Ico have made have been great so even with the development hell, I still believe TLG will be great.

So Forza trumps GT:Sport and TLG most likely trumps ReCore. The rest is personal preference. However look at next year. Sony already has the first half won because Horizon: Zero Dawn. Microsoft has nothing big announced. All of their first party games were released in this year or last. Halo is fall 2018. Forza 7 is guaranteed fall 2017. They will have to rely on Scorpio third party stuff, at most 1 or 2 unannounced non-Forza games, indie games, and bought temporary third party exclusives like Tomb Raider and Dead Rising. Sony already announced has a few big 2017 games and a few big 2018 games. Also Death Stranding for 2019.

Only games on that list that even remotely interest me is Horizon 3 and Gears. I'll wait till Dead Rising 4 come out on PS4.

supraking9512872d ago

MS has sadly burned Halo, Gears and Forza lol Too many releases on 360 amd now on X1. Forza never charts on NPD Top 10 and Gears will suffer like Halo 5...buy day one and be done with it entirely before the weekend lmao

Rimeskeem2872d ago

All of which will be available on PC :)

2872d ago
XanderZane2872d ago

Not on PS4, PS4 Neo, Wii U or NX. Everything played on PC will use Microsoft's O/S and be paid for through their Win 10 store. More money for Microsoft. Gamers get to play the games on XB1 and PC. Don't see the problem. I'll be playing most of them on XB1 in co-op and multiplayer with friends.

Saranya2872d ago

iTechHeads2872d ago

Games that we knew about already....

Congratulations.

Microsoft still hasn't given me a reason why I should buy an XB1.

-Foxtrot2872d ago

They are kidding right?

Crackdown 3 at last years E3...it's a no show

Halo 5 was at the Xbox One reveal....didn't come out until 2 and a half years later

Gears of War 4 shown off last year....not out until the end of this year

Sea of Thieves shown off last year....not out until next year

Recore was shown off last year....not out until September, a year a bit away

Cupheads was again shown off last year....no release date yet a year later

Fable Legends was shown off last year....CANCELLED

Stop bullshiting Microsoft. Most of them were coming out soon anyway since you showed them off last year.

Chevalier2872d ago

Also we knew about Gears years ago. Right when the studio was still called Black Tusk studio before being renamed.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/...

It was back in 2014 that MS announced they bought Gears, but, we already knew Gears was in development before that.

IamTylerDurden12872d ago

Sony can show games with no release date at e3 bc they've already shown (or ppl already know about) No Man's Sky, Horizon, Gravity Rush 2, Persona 5, GT Sport, Nioh, Dreams, Last Guardian, Nier, Hellblade, Ni No Kuni 2, Wild, The Forest, Matterfall, Tomorrow Children, Abzu, One Piece BB, Boundless, DQ Builders, Let it Die, Mother Russia Bleeds, Hob, Edith Finch, U4 sp dlc ect coming out in the next yr.

If Sony didn't have all the exclusives/console exclusives coming in the next yr or so, i'd be worried...but they do.

We could've went to Gamestop for release dates. I've NEVER watched an E3 for release dates or to see games that are releasing 'soon'. Core gamers usually know what coming soon anyway.

Thanks. I guess.

ApocalypseShadow2873d ago (Edited 2873d ago )

We all know it's goal post moving. Doesn't change the fact the games being shown were shown last year and the year before that. Don't let them spin it though. Goal post moving....

It's about sales every NPD. It's not about sales every NPD.

It's about metacritic. It's not about metacritic.

It's about this party games. it's not about third party games.

Its about exclusives,it's not about exclusives.

it's not about power, it's about power.

It's not about Indies, it's about Indies.

It's not about VR. It's about VR (that someone else made)

E3 has always been about showing games and being surprised by new announcements. Not about what's coming Christmas time as if 3 months mattered over all year long releasing games.

Sony has squashed so many points Microsoft had and Aaron Greenberg tooting his horn. Sony was called arrogant but Microsoft was arrogant all last gen. Including Dan greenwalt and his arrogant behavior against GT.

Now it's so much fun pointing at all the mouths that have been shut up just from Sony releasing PS4 at the same time which was another thing PlayStation fans said "if both released at the same time, Microsoft would get dominated."

And here we are today. With games and sales. But that comes from preparing beforehand like Sony building studios last gen and letting third parties go multiplatform and not relying on money hatting.

King_Lothric2873d ago

Bulls eye!!!

This is what I have been saying too. The double standards and goal post moving as you said. They change their standards every moment just to fit their justifications.

One day VR is garbage and AR the future, then MS announce VR plans and the next day they say "I love VR and Oculus now".

AngelicIceDiamond2872d ago

"Doesn't change the fact the games being shown were shown last year and the year before that. Don't let them spin it though. Goal post moving...."

So and whats the grand prize? Whats the reward? Xbox fans get to play games soon and you and your fanboy friends sit around and bitch complain and get upvotes? That's the new goal for fanboys have fun with that sounds like a blast. But I'm so wrong.

You realize once MS games release they'll re-new more games next E3 for 2018 and beyond right I mean that's how it goes and that's how it should be. I guess I'm wrong again.

"E3 has always been about showing games and being surprised by new announcements. Not about what's coming Christmas time as if 3 months mattered over all year long releasing games."

E3 is about both games down the line or games coming in either the holiday or the following year it all depends on the publishers, It isn't just about years down the road its up and coming or in the future depending on who you look at. There isn't just one definition. But I'm so wrong though I guess. Once again I'm wrong.

"And here we are today. With games and sales. But that comes from preparing beforehand like Sony building studios last gen and letting third parties go multiplatform and not relying on money hatting."

I guess we'll forget about last holiday where Sony money hatted DLC, COD, Battlefront, AC for third party, Destiny twice once in 2014 and the expansion in 2015, Street Fighter V, Watchdogs and COD again. If you mean overall no Sony has their slate of games and are money hatting less then previous years then I agree. Moral of the story, one company isn't a knight in shining armor both money hat and news flash both Sony and MS will always money hat weather we like it or not that's just the ugly side of buisness. Omg wrong, wrong, lol nope I'm right I'm right on everything I've said nobodies innocent in money hatting third party. But please prove me wrong though I seek the truth not popularity.

_-EDMIX-_2872d ago

As if they have no event shows to do this.

Microsoft is saying this simply because they've actually do not have the same number of teams as Sony has for god sakes Sony has several developers still working in the dark on titles that have yet to be announced.

Get Microsoft spent an entire E3 talking about games we already knew about the years prior smh.

They can't spin their way out of this reality is they just do not have the same number of teams as sony that consistently put out strong releases were ms has a small core of teams that literally makes the same damn things every other year.

Bruh2872d ago

Aside from the actual show, Microsoft had the best E3 by far. They had more than twice the number of floor demos and also had a lot more presence in outside events around Los Angeles. As a regular consumer you only see one side, but to those who watch the presentations and actually attend the show, the conference was great in providing steam to their remaining line-up of games for this year and getting people attending E3 to make the show floor much more crowded. You can jerk off to God of War's footage, but it had no demo, same with Horizon, TLG, Days Gone, Detroit and so on

_-EDMIX-_2872d ago

Lol so aside from the actual show they had the best? So aside from the actual conference that people went there to see if they have the best? 😂😂😂 28514;😂😃㈳ 5;😃😃😃 Sure

Because Sony and Nintendo had no playable games? I never thought even slightly and you guys could read my damn comments before this E3 that Nintendo would have a slightly better showing than Microsoft 😂😂😂 28514;

Wow talk about stupidity. How many exclusives has Xbone players had this year exactly? 1 total game that is NOT an indie game. Remember when people said not to count indies?! Indiestation comments?! Now there are so few games on Xbone indies DO matter so Inside, Cuphead and Ori are important though? Remember the knock on PS4 is 'greatness awaits'?! Well waiting aside here's 2016 so far.

2016 releases

PS4

January
Amplitude
The Witness

February
Earth Defense Force 4.1 The Shadow of New Despair
Gravity Rush
SF V

March
Day of the Tentacle
Samurai Warrior Empire 4 Empires
Salt and Sanctuary
Day of the Tentacle
MLB 16
Nights of Azure

April
Ratchet and Clank
Alienation

May
Uncharted 4
Valkyria Chronicles
Dungeons 2
Shadow of the Beast

June
Odin Sphere
Star Ocean 5
Paragon

In those six months Xbone has

Quantum Break
Superhot
Inside
Cobalt
Flame in the Flood

If you don't include any indie games:

Xbone = 1 exclusive game
PS4 = 13 exclusives

Weird seems to me 13 >>>>> 1

In the next 6 months there are something like 20 more games not including indies on PS4 and what 4 games on Xbone (Gears, Forza, Recore, DR4)?!

With such a landslide of games in comparison why would it matter if Sony shows games in advance?! Unless you somehow think something like 3 dozen exclusives vs. Xbone 5 is somehow impressive.

The amount of goalpost moving is hilarious.

zeuanimals2872d ago

@gapecanpie:

I think they'd prefer if people bought on Xbox consoles, though. They can charge you to play online and if you happened to buy a 3rd party game on it, MS stands to profit, and these two are the things that finally helped Xbox be profitable last gen. They can't do that on PC.

jb2272872d ago

Well they ain't exactly alone there...main difference being PS4 has also had a great lineup of games during the first part of the year as well.

I mean it's kinda basic math now that Sony releases exclusives & console exclusives w/ more frequency than any other box on the market, and the huge handful of big announcements at E3 only cements the coming year and beyond, games like Detroit, GoW & Spider-Man will join the list w/ Dreams, Wild, Shenmue, etc....

I fully don't understand this criticism around showcasing games that aren't coming immediately. I mean its obviously hypocritical seeing how the only games that weren't already announced at MS' presser were DR4 & Forza....I mean where was the criticism for MS announcing games like Scalebound & Crackdown? Crackdown will have been announced for at least 3 years by the time it releases. Ain't exactly a fortnite last minute reveal to release there.

Sony are just better at showcasing games imo. They typically always reveal new games w/ full gameplay demos as opposed to the CG trailers that MS typically reveals with...they typically show off games fewer successive times, and they cater to their audience with their show, they don't just throw out a show then try to spin the narrative afterwards. The remarks from this MS exec are just petty.

Sic_Parvis_Magna2873d ago

'We wanted to show games people can buy soon'

Most of which you showed last year

DreadGara2873d ago

Sound like they had thousands hidden exclusive games they kept in the shadow, yeah right... whatever you say MS, I ALWAYS BELIEVE IN YOU.

Wait a sec, I do actually believe them, they have Halo 10, Gears 18, Forza 5000.....and Too Human 2 finally. Guess what, they all coming late 2017 / early 2018.

spicelicka2872d ago

Which is exactly what Sony did this year. You realize you're going to see all the big Sony reveals again next year right? They will most likely be in the same position as MS is this year.

jznrpg2872d ago

We will see them ,bit the difference is there will be new games announced as well, stuff we have no idea about. Sucker Punch and Naughty Dog at least

P_Bomb2872d ago

Except the next Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, From Software games are still unannounced. Probably something new from Sega, Vanillaware, Rockstar, Criterion brewing since they're all due follow ups. Insomniac will have another project due since they always have at least 2 going at once. Next year's conference is in no danger.

jb2272872d ago

uhh...what about all of those reveals from last E3 that weren't present this year? The only 2 games they had shown the prior year were TLG, which got a brief trailer & release date this year and Horizon, which got another great on stage demo & its own release date.

If we are talking about actual trends & pure facts of history, Sony will most likely only show 1 or 2 of the newly revealed games at next E3, along w/ another big handful of huge new announcements. That's what history shows...It also says that Sony still has more new titles left to announce during PGW & PSX

trooper_2872d ago

Uh...no they're not. There's still unannounced games we haven't heard of yet.

RosweeSon2872d ago

Horizon will be out, Lego Star Wars is out, call of duty will be out, resident evil 7 will be out, even the last guardian will be out so how are Sony gonna be in the same position? The only games possibly getting shown again as they are still early in development is Days Gone, Hideo's game, maybe Detroit and Spider-Man maybe but the rest will be all out and they'll will have another batch cooking up. Microsoft just don't seem to be getting the games they did when 360 was out.
