Why not just wait a bit longer and make it the next-gen Xbox? Hate these mid-gen upgrades.

corroios2871d ago

this is the next gen and not mid gen upgrade. they are going from 1080p to 4k and got five times the power of the xbox one. the same when the xbox come out for the 360.

Underworld2871d ago

It's not next-gen it's still XB1 and PS4 and we'll still get the true next-gen Xbox and PS5 a couple or a few years after these mid-gen upgrades.

jessionpc2871d ago

HahahahaHAHAHAHA!

the XB1 was only 5 times more powerful than the 360? RETARD.

You, are a RETARD.

Try somewhere along the lines of 25 times.

This, "REFRESH", likely has 8gb of ram. It's a resolution bump and NOTHING else.

Damn some peoples children are just... So stupid...

Erik73572870d ago

Its latterly a pc.....with the xbox logo on it...if its not no one will buy it but stupid uneducated gamers because all of Microsoft games are now coming to pc.

onisama2870d ago

@fries when did u get that idea actually ps xbox are computers but focused on gaming purpose and using materiels that pc is using .... so don t be a D*** about it you dont like it dont buy it

You make it sound like Sony and Microsoft have done mid-gen updgrades alot.

bleedsoe9mm2871d ago (Edited 2871d ago )

i'll describe a ps5 for you x86 with X4.5 times the gpu of the ps4 backwards and forward compatible , 4k native with UHD or at least that will be close to the next consoles until pc hardware changes and 8k becomes viable

jmc88882871d ago

It's going to be a while until that hits. To really get next gen you have to wait for ANOTHER process node shrink, plus some more of the tech that will be fitted with that.

The box will be capable of 4k, but not even as well as what the current XB1 OR PS4 does 1080p.

In other words, it can do it, and sometimes it will be done well, but most games will not be able to run 4k well on Scorpio, so they'll drop it to 1080p... which will give them a ton of power to work around to up IQ and keep a solid 60. They should unlock 120hz, because Scorpio could easily pull off 1080/120 in most current games.

But for comparison, since it's always important to know where this will stand, by late 2017, Nvidia will likely have a single GPU card north of 15 TF, the small card (i.e. the small circuit board 1080 is already at 9 TFlops). The big boards will be out either late this year or sometime 1st half next year... and Nvidia's TFlops tend to outperform AMD's. So it'll likely be ~3x Scorpio.

The time to launch a new iteration of a console is when a process node shrink occurs. That's why a GTX 1070 beats a Titan X and 980ti. Does it with only 125-150 watts, and is doing it on a small circuit board. It's also why AMD's RX480 for $199-239 or so will beat a GTX 980.

The Scorpio is a big bump up, because PS4 and XB1 both launched underpowered. Scorpio will now basically have top end 2014 parts in late 2017. So it's very similar to 2013, except we're actually at a spot where this extra power gets you over the threshold in so many ways, but also falls a bit short at 4k. But it can do it.

Throw in UHD support and the ability for these new consoles to run VR better and everything just aligns overall. Sony can sell their 4ktv's more because they will have a system Neo that can also play around on the fringes of 4k, while also having UHD bluray playback, and Neo helps VR.

While Microsoft gets to start over and move on past Xbox One as its flagship with Scorpio righting the wrongs of Xbox One. It too can power VR headsets like Rift. So on and so forth.

It makes sense for both of them to do this here. Are we jumping the gun saying they might switch to this? Maybe. But maybe not. Maybe they feel the need to do this now, and if it works, maybe they switch to an iterative model. Perhaps they feel by doing so, they don't have all their eggs in one basket. If one of them comes up with another Xbox One disaster, it's not a 7-8 year doom cycle for them. Or simply maybe the circumstances of everything around it forced it's hand this one time, and going forward we'll go back to 5-8 year console cycles. There's lots of rationale to why it could be good.

X86 means they don't need to do a full makeover for each console. They could literally just strap the same UI to the new console, and just continue to update it over time. What was once the high priced model, becomes the low price model. So When PS5 or Scorpio 2 (or whatever) comes out, the Neo and Scorpio becomes the low price model and base XB1 and PS4 consoles are phased out.

nunley332870d ago

So you're saying 4K gaming on Scorpio but with sacrifices, that's not what Microsoft Said but undoubtedly true lol. I think the Neo only compares to the Xboxone S and it isn't the PS5,the PS will be at least as powerful as Scorpio for VR and 4K video and some 4K games.

King_Lothric2871d ago

Because they are miserably loosing in the console market and they need to do something about it plus shift to the PC market too

TomLovesXBOX2871d ago

@underworld they could literally call it the xbox two and people would believe it. They are completely giving up on this generation and going to the next, but are telling people it's only an upgraded xbox one because they don't want to piss of their fans. Sketchy marketing and this is why I don't trust Microsoft anymore

NirvanaInChains2870d ago

a upgrade able console is the future

Erik73572870d ago

There wont be a next gen xbox and project scoprio is a gaming pc thats shipping with the xbox logo on it.
Microsoft said all their games are coming to pc and there making xbox a service, get that through your head there getting out of consoles, its over they did a shit job and now they are getting out of it.

Grap2871d ago

By the look of it it's a beast, can't wait for it.

Deadlead2871d ago

It's definitely gonna be super powerful, but what's the point if games aren't being developed from the ground up for it? Seems like a waste of power.

Grap2871d ago

doesn't matter as long as there's a pc version for the game only tweaks here and there.

Deadlead2871d ago

But thats what I mean, there's now little to no separation between going for a high end pc or scorpio. I buy hardware based on the games that I can play on it. If the catalog between pc and scorpio are literally identical pc gaming becomes a lot more attractive. I'm just getting prettier One games, that to me is a waste of potential.

XanderZane2870d ago

Developers seemed very excited to start making games for it using all it's power. Did you not see the video announcement and the comments from developers and hardware designers. They went to developers and asked them what they wanted in the system. So yeah, pretty sure games will be built from the ground up for the hardware.

NirvanaInChains2870d ago

It will be no different then buying a multi plat game for pc and ps4/xbox. The pc version will have ultra setting while the console version is playing on low/medium setting as usual. This time scorpio players will be able to play on ultra setting as well with pc players. IN your logic, making games that are not exclusive to pc is a waste of time.

I never noticed this until i bought a pc capable of playing ultra settings buttery smooth and got BF3. I always assumed pc players were playing the same quality of game as i was on ps3. Battlefield 3 on 360/ps3 mine as well of been made by a different developer it was so drastic of a change.

@Nirvana I'm not saying that prettier graphics/frames are a waste of time, I'm saying the way MS is utilizing power never before available to console gamers is a waste. MS is too focused on creating this Windows/Xbox ecosystem and not leaving some people behind. They should be developing titles that showcase the power of Scorpio. I guess if developers are truly excited about developing the same game on the One, Scorpio, and PC and Scorpio performance doesn't suffer like games developed simultaneously for current gen and previous gen consoles I'm fine with that. But I guess I'm a bit of a pessimist.

A beast if the machine was launch this year. I think they should also put 16 gigas, because the jump from 1080p to 4k is huge.

dcbronco2870d ago

If the leaked information is true that what AMD has been talking about with Polaris so far is the GPU just coasting and Vega is twice as good 4K will be no issue. Rumors say even with higher clock speeds the amount of power the 480 is pushing still doesn't account for how well games are running on it. It is apparently very efficient and you can expect twice the performance from Vega. Don't believe Microsoft is being completely open about the power of Scorpio. AMD apparently hasn't been completely open about their new chips. They are better than we have been led to believe.

Budrazor2870d ago

They shouldn't be cause Sony is gonna troll them on the specs.

AndrewLB2870d ago

AMD has a long track record of over-promising and under-delivering when it comes to performance of their upcoming products. Whether it was Bulldozer, Steamroller, or Mantle... AMD has been on a losing streak since the Athlon-64 was was released.

dcbronco2869d ago

But apparently Andrew, the worm has turned. Because the leaked information isn't coming from AMD, it's coming from people who test equipment. So far it seems AMD under promised. If you're not convinced look at their stock price. Anyone paying attention knows the stock market is a scam. They lead people in a certain direction knowing people are extremely slow at adjusting to new information. They will go years believing long disproved information. Sometimes generations pass on terribly wrong information. All year tech sites have reported AMD parts have met expectations in testing. Yet the stock price dropped. AMD was clear on their expectations so we had a general idea what to expect. The stock was below $200, that's when insiders buy. But they're telling you to sell. Now the price has more than doubled and has a long way to go. But the general public will still believe the worse. They'll buy that NVIDIA card when they could have gotten better performance for less from AMD.

And I'll throw in this prediction, after the huge success of the 480, 70 and 60, AMD will announce Vega. Vega will kill anything NVIDIA has the offer. AMD will own the market causing huge losses for NVIDIA. After a few years of financial trouble NVIDIA will be bought by Intel to try to counter Zen. Because Intel will be struggling against Zen based APUs and will need much better embedded GPUs for their chips.

Embracer CEO demonstrates a masterclass in mental gymnastics in latest interview.
"I'm sure I deserve a lot of criticism, but I don't think my team or companies deserve all the criticism. I could take a lot of that blame myself. But ultimately I need to believe in the mission," he said.

Turned based Phantasy Star and Shinning Force remain at the top of my list of Sega IPs that need to return. At the very least I'd take a Shining Force collection that has 1,2,3, CD and the Game Gear entries.

FinalBoss6d ago

I was hesitant to put these two on. I've personally played more PSO than the RPG version. And shame on me, I don't remember much about Shining Force to talk about it properly.

That said, so many Sega licences deserve their place in this list.

jznrpg3d ago

A new Phantasy Star in the numbered series would be amazing. Shining Force too. But I’d settle on some collections as that’s probably the best we will get

anast5d ago

I don't trust Sega to do a proper comeback. The games will be just remastered and/or monetized to death.

gold_drake5d ago

shining force.

but indont see that happening unfortunately.
