i'll describe a ps5 for you x86 with X4.5 times the gpu of the ps4 backwards and forward compatible , 4k native with UHD or at least that will be close to the next consoles until pc hardware changes and 8k becomes viable

It's going to be a while until that hits. To really get next gen you have to wait for ANOTHER process node shrink, plus some more of the tech that will be fitted with that.

The box will be capable of 4k, but not even as well as what the current XB1 OR PS4 does 1080p.

In other words, it can do it, and sometimes it will be done well, but most games will not be able to run 4k well on Scorpio, so they'll drop it to 1080p... which will give them a ton of power to work around to up IQ and keep a solid 60. They should unlock 120hz, because Scorpio could easily pull off 1080/120 in most current games.

But for comparison, since it's always important to know where this will stand, by late 2017, Nvidia will likely have a single GPU card north of 15 TF, the small card (i.e. the small circuit board 1080 is already at 9 TFlops). The big boards will be out either late this year or sometime 1st half next year... and Nvidia's TFlops tend to outperform AMD's. So it'll likely be ~3x Scorpio.

The time to launch a new iteration of a console is when a process node shrink occurs. That's why a GTX 1070 beats a Titan X and 980ti. Does it with only 125-150 watts, and is doing it on a small circuit board. It's also why AMD's RX480 for $199-239 or so will beat a GTX 980.

The Scorpio is a big bump up, because PS4 and XB1 both launched underpowered. Scorpio will now basically have top end 2014 parts in late 2017. So it's very similar to 2013, except we're actually at a spot where this extra power gets you over the threshold in so many ways, but also falls a bit short at 4k. But it can do it.

Throw in UHD support and the ability for these new consoles to run VR better and everything just aligns overall. Sony can sell their 4ktv's more because they will have a system Neo that can also play around on the fringes of 4k, while also having UHD bluray playback, and Neo helps VR.

While Microsoft gets to start over and move on past Xbox One as its flagship with Scorpio righting the wrongs of Xbox One. It too can power VR headsets like Rift. So on and so forth.

It makes sense for both of them to do this here. Are we jumping the gun saying they might switch to this? Maybe. But maybe not. Maybe they feel the need to do this now, and if it works, maybe they switch to an iterative model. Perhaps they feel by doing so, they don't have all their eggs in one basket. If one of them comes up with another Xbox One disaster, it's not a 7-8 year doom cycle for them. Or simply maybe the circumstances of everything around it forced it's hand this one time, and going forward we'll go back to 5-8 year console cycles. There's lots of rationale to why it could be good.

X86 means they don't need to do a full makeover for each console. They could literally just strap the same UI to the new console, and just continue to update it over time. What was once the high priced model, becomes the low price model. So When PS5 or Scorpio 2 (or whatever) comes out, the Neo and Scorpio becomes the low price model and base XB1 and PS4 consoles are phased out.

I never noticed this until i bought a pc capable of playing ultra settings buttery smooth and got BF3. I always assumed pc players were playing the same quality of game as i was on ps3. Battlefield 3 on 360/ps3 mine as well of been made by a different developer it was so drastic of a change.

@Nirvana I'm not saying that prettier graphics/frames are a waste of time, I'm saying the way MS is utilizing power never before available to console gamers is a waste. MS is too focused on creating this Windows/Xbox ecosystem and not leaving some people behind. They should be developing titles that showcase the power of Scorpio. If the leaked information is true that what AMD has been talking about with Polaris so far is the GPU just coasting and Vega is twice as good 4K will be no issue. Rumors say even with higher clock speeds the amount of power the 480 is pushing still doesn't account for how well games are running on it. And I'll throw in this prediction, after the huge success of the 480, 70 and 60, AMD will announce Vega. Vega will kill anything NVIDIA has the offer. AMD will own the market causing huge losses for NVIDIA. After a few years of financial trouble NVIDIA will be bought by Intel to try to counter Zen. Because Intel will be struggling against Zen based APUs and will need much better embedded GPUs for their chips.

I think people need to realize it's not the same as a regular console launch.

I'm sure they hope it sells like gangbusters, but that's not how they are positioning it.

They and Sony are pushing Scorpio and Neo as high end versions of their consoles that can add in 4k multimedia/bluray/gaming/VR support.

I'm pretty sure they expect sales to be slower than the PS4/XB1 launched at, and if that happens, which imo is likely, it's not a failure.

Over time and as the price goes down, and as more people get on board with VR, as more people get 4ktv's, the 'need' for Neo and Scorpio goes up.

So I don't expect it to sell as big. Not initially. Once the Neo and Scorpio become the 'cheap' version of the console, it'll sell more. That's how generations work. The cheaper they get, the more they sell. So I wouldn't expect Neo or Scorpio to consistently beat the PS4/XB1 in sales until they are the cheap version of the console and are beating whatever comes next.

How you view what is a flop is changing. If it becomes an iterative model, the base case to judge it against won't be the PS4 or XB1, since those launched in a brand new console cycle, it will be the Neo and Scorpio because (if we go iterative model) each updated console will be launching midstream against a previously introduced midstream console update. Even then it wouldn't surprise me that a lot of people hold out for PS5/Scorpio 2 or whatever.

If that's the case, the GPU isn't 6TF's, the entire system is including CPU.

GPU is likely some variant of the RX480.

RX480 = 5.5 FLOPS (or thereabout)
CPU = .6 (or thereabout)

Given that a consumer version of the RX480 is only $200 a launch, Sony would be foolish not to have something similar in the Neo. In 2017 a consumer RX480 would be even cheaper.

My biggest problem was the idea that they are coming out with the slim, THEN telling us about the Scorpio. As in, "Here's a console you can just ignore, but then buy the better one next year. Interesting comments and I can see both sides of the coin. But after reading some of Phil interviews, it really sounds like they are more interested in the service that is Xbox Live. for MS the exclusive isn't about it being bound to the hardware, but rather to Xbox Live. So yes, MS still has many exclusives it's just not tied to anyone particular hardware, It's tied to the service. So in the future they won't say its console exclusive but Xbox Live exclusive.

Hope people know not to get their hopes up with 4k. Some game will run it, but most cannot at 60 frames. Watch GTX 1080 benchmarks and see that even that card cannot run games at 60 frames and that is a lot more powerful than the Scorpio. The 1070 which is around 6.5 TFlops, around the Scorpio's 6, runs even worse. 2k and 1080p will almost always be pretty steady though.

Don't overestimate 'coding to the metal'. If you take any multiplatform game released this cycle on a PC and Console with the same specs it only amounts to 15-20% improvement.

Essentially the Sony Neo went with a 970-like GPU, and MS countered with Scorpio that has a 1070ish GPU. I mean 4K takes 4x as much processing power than 1080p. so I can surmise is that when played on the XBone, will be 1080 with lower res texture, and 4K when played on the Scorpio. I don't know what going on with consoles, as their main selling point is ease of use, pricing, and 6-8 year gen-life. Now with 3-4 year 'upgrade' cycle and price of the new console, you've lost 2 of those 3 points. I mean, it's no different then my GPU time-cycle for my PC. The line between PC/Console have been blurred even more now...

This is the X-Box Microsoft should have released at launch, not what they've already delivered. It's too late, MS, you already have a respectable install base in the multi-millions, just focus hardcore on software, especially exclusive IPs, and ride out the gen preparing a better hardware system for next-gen.

Why upset millions by making their current investment a 2nd-tier system? What Microsoft really seems to be interested in doing is releasing a fully backwards-compatible X-Box Two in the form of Project Scorpio. After a few years I can see them start to release some games that will only run on Scorpio, just like there are some New 3DS games that will not run on the original 3DS. A couple years beyond this point, if Microsoft still feels the console market is relevant, it will release new hardware again.

Microsoft will try training consumers to buy new hardware more often. This is bad for consumers because it cheapens our investment. We as consumers of gaming hardware want to know that what we invest in is the biggest & best gaming device on the market and will be so for many years to come, NOT that two to three years down the line it'll be replaced by a substantially significant better version. Consumers have been trained to accept this trend with computers and smart phones, don't extend this to gaming consoles as well. Furthermore, this is bad for developers. A plus for developers of console games over PC games are the fixed specs on consoles that must be targeted for optimization, and the fewer platforms the better. With Microsoft & Sony introducing supped-up SQUs this is now two additional platforms that require support, which could result in less optimization. Not only less optimization due to more platforms, but issues with frame-rate and resolution could become more serious if games are designed from the ground up for Scorpio & Neo and later watered-down for current model XBOs & PS4s.

Jesus Christ Microsoft added the latest standards for video and support for the latest TV's and somehow that's them "pushing useless tech."

Didn't they say it was 6tf? I'm just pointing out bad maths on MS part but the One is currently 1.23 tf 4.5 x that is only 5.5tf not 6. No issue anyway. 5.5 is still a big number for a console. But once again I'll reiterate that the final TF number isn't the be all of the console. There's so much more to it. Bandwidth. CUs. Async compute units. I think we are approaching the cusp of diminishing returns seeing games like uncharted and the like so the power struggle may nearly be over.

I do hope MS puts out patches to upgrade games like Halo 5, Forza Horizon 3, Gears of War 4 to fully utilize Scorpio when it comes out. I imagine they will.

The cpu in both the neo and the scopio are like nooses around their necks. If these consoles are both built on the same base as the xbox one and ps4 but with slightly overclocked cpus and bigger gpus the same bottle necks and hitching will occur in third party games. It will just look prettier.. still run like shit.

Ms knows full well that Sony may begin a bit of a power creep with the Neo... I have a feeling the Scorpio has room to grow a bit more and may be released even more powerful than what we have been able to see so far. I guess the ball is in Sony's court now. I wonder if the Neo is powerful enough for whatever timeline and price-point they want or will they attempt to close the spec gap with Scorpio. They know full well that the PS4 sold more mainly because it was more powerful and all the positive press that came with that fact.

Ok. So same gap as PS4 to xbone. (Just over 40% additional gpu power) But this time the more powerful console comes out a year later and will be more money. Gonna be tough for Microsoft. Also with diminishing returns the difference will be less noticeable. I'll be buying the neo then. And only one of them has exclusives. :D

Doesn't matter because with the software line up on PS everyone will be getting the Neo instead of Scorpio, Mostly like Neo will try to make it even more powerful as that is the standard approach with Sony and hardware but this time Sony has the software to back it up. I am not into buying new stuf every 2 years either, but I think that releasing a new console every 7-8 years is just out, every 4-5 years is much better :)
