Is Overwatch Getting A Pass?

In the week of its release, Overwatch has received a lot of praise by mainstream media. But there's a vocal group of gamers wondering if the game is getting a pass. As a multiplayer-only game with micro-transactions, is Blizzard's FPS getting a free pass by the media?

That's putting it nicely. The game clearly is using Team Fortress 2 and CSGO's loot crate system. People have spent much too much money on just opening up crates already. It's funny how everything Blizzard does seems to get a free pass though.

"Why do you care"

I don't care. But you seem to not comprehend what I'm saying. Blizzard should not be getting a free pass for even offering people the ability to spend hundreds of dollars on cosmetics.

TFJWM2900d ago

If people want to spend their money to buy skins or other non game improving stuff why do you care. The game plays the same for everyone regardless if you have just bought it or spent $500 on it....

_-EDMIX-_2900d ago

buddy, "why do you care"?

Seriously?

Someone wants to spend their money on junk, they have free will to do that.

How is this an issue to you? So you are made others are spending their money how the want to? How does that effect you though? The are just skins....you'll live

UnHoly_One2900d ago

I don't get the anger at Blizzard over having microtransactions in the game. It is all 100% cosmetic stuff that doesn't affect the gameplay in any way at all.

They are selling a product, and some people want to buy it. Where is the problem?

I don't like McDonald's hamburgers, but if I go there to get some chicken nuggets I'm not going to be pissed at them for selling something I don't want.

I just don't get it.

I don't have any desire to buy any loot boxes, but I could care less if they want to sell them. Good for them, I hope they make a bunch of money.

It's funny how people like to say this is "for the clicks". I've been playing Overwatch this entire week and my time played is at 30 hours (according to the stats page). So I wrote a review for it and also wrote about a topic I find interesting, which is how a lot of people think the media is giving the game a pass.

So unless you expect me to write about random happenings that aren't at all relevant, everything would be considered "for the clicks". I write about what interest me at the time. I also don't consider myself a gaming journalist. I'm a gamer who happens to write his opinions and reviews on a website. Fell free to contact me directly on twitter @mrblackmagik if you want to discuss this further.

if the transactions effected gameplay then the game would of had a much more negative push back.

SF5 got hated like hell for not having hardly enough content at launch..yet overwatch is being praised to high hell and people saying just wait there will be more...on top of that. the console version is being charged $20 more...

Vegamyster2900d ago

SF5 launched with short Story Modes (Proper one doesn't come til June, the game came out in February), online (Ranked/Casual) & that's it, It was missing many basic features that the previous games had which is why people were upset.

generic-user-name2900d ago

And where is OW's story mode?

_-EDMIX-_2900d ago

"SF5 launched with short Story Modes"

Well.....thats nice. Overwatch isn't that soooooooo, I"m not sure what to tell you. The price for the game is fine as it was never going to be a SP game, thus not really sure what the point you are making is.....

That is like saying "Witcher 3 is an RPG with lots of hours, Overwatch is not" lol

Then....maybe you don't want to play the MP only genre. How is that the game developers fault? Their job was to create a MP only title.....that is all that should be expected.

You've known of this for months, you've played the beta and the team has been extremely transparent about what it actually is.

Witcher 3 is missing a MP mode with you're logic.

GTSport is missing having a story mode and being fighting game lol

When did games need to be ALL IN ONES? I don't recall that ever being the norm.

We had Quake, we had Doom, we had CS, we had TF series, we had BF when it was actually MP ONLY btw, we had Tribes, we had Planetside etc. I'm sorry bud, but MOST games were never really all in one bundle type deals, most gamers where either or, not both.

Most games that included some MP mode or SP mode...if it wasn't their main specialty, you could tell really, really quickly.

DragonDDark2900d ago

@Edmix
Blizzard teased a campaign mode though

Vegamyster2900d ago

@generic-user-name

Overwatch is a new IP, Blizzard made it as a MP shooter. Street Fighter is not, the new game lacked features that the previous games had. It would be like Call of Duty launching without a story mode & only had TDM/Domination modes in multiplayer, you don't expect less from a new game in a *established* franchise. That's why people were upset & is sold well under there expectations, it was basically rushed out for EVO.

@_-EDMIX-_

I don't know what you're going on about, i never said or implied "When did games need to be ALL IN ONES? I don't recall that ever being the norm." Look at my comment to @generic-user-name

Don't disagree with you on that one.

Folks didn't like SFV having limited content and having server issues at launch, I feel....maybe they should feel the same way about Overwatch.

I"m not sure though, I got SFV at launch and I didn't get Overwatch, so I don't really know what to say about this as I didn't play it to really know how bad it might have been (in terms server issues).

But I've read what is released with Overwatch and I actually personally think its fine for what it is. I played TF2 at launch with way, way less for over 300 hours.

antz11042899d ago (Edited 2899d ago )

Well maybe that SF V averaged a 7.4 while Overwatch is holding steady at 9.1 has something to do with it. It's a ton of fun.

I Miss the Original Overwatch

Blizzard's blending of the FPS and MOBA was a masterpiece of design that met its end too soon.

Tedakin348d ago

I miss 6v6, lootboxes and an actual player level. I used to look forward to Junkenstein's Revenge at Halloween and the Christmas event cause of all the cool cosmetics you could earn. I'd play it every day. Now you play it for an hour, earn some stupid charm, and you're done. No reason to play anymore.

ActualWhiteMan347d ago

RIP OW2 is trash. My friends stopped playing it like we used to the first one every Friday night.

smoothdude347d ago

this. loved overwatch 1. 2 is no fun. there is lots to play… find something you like.

Gardenia347d ago

I'd never thought I would say this but the loot boxes in Overwatch wasn't so bad compared to what it is now.

GoodGuy09348d ago

I remember those epic dreamworks-like CGIs. I wasn't a fan at all but man, I knew it was a rediculously huge game. OW2 I've seen...nothing, died maybe after a week.

moomoo319347d ago

OW2 is a disaster. All these years to make the game 5v5….? And they scrapped PvE? The game just sucks man zero fun.

Activision Shows Concerns Over The Call Of Duty And Overwatch League's Longevity

Activision has admitted that its Call of Duty and Overwatch eSport Leagues are facing challenges that the company might fail to address.

just_looken367d ago

Ha ha these have been in trouble fort awhile so now we talk about it/address it?

How about you explain why you make billions but always have layoff's.

S2Killinit367d ago

Activision:
Woe is me

These guys come off so disingenuous.

ModsDoBetter367d ago

The timing is strange but COD has been on a nosedive for several years & then followed by the backlash of Overwatch 2.

sadraiden366d ago

COD has literally never been more popular. Every single year it sells more and more copies than the previous year. Don't know what you mean by nosedive.

ModsDoBetter366d ago (Edited 366d ago )

@sadraiden

It has taken a nosedive in quality.
However, as you based your argument on sales numbers, let's take a dive, shall we?

"COD has literally never been more popular"
COD has literally been more popular.

See: MW2 sales numbers estimate to be at 8million copies sold at the end of 2022 (no official numbers released) yet Black Ops (2010) sits at a staggering 31million copies sold.

"Every single year it sells more and more copies than the previous year"
Again, not true.

(In release order)
Black Ops - 31 million copies
Modern Warfare 3 - 30 million copies
Black Ops 2 - 29 million copies
Ghosts - 28 million copies
Advanced Warfare - 21 million copies
Black Ops 3 - 26 million copies
Infinite Warfare - 13 million copies
WWII - 19 million copies
Black Ops 4 - 14 million copies
MW2019 - 30 million copies
Cold War - 30 million copies
Vanguard - Unreleased sales numbers
MW2022 - No solid numbers yet, though as above - 8 million estimated as of end of 2022

As you can see "every single year it sells more and more copies than the previous year" is an inaccurate statement with the sales numbers fluctuating, though I do feel MW2022 would sell well over the course of the year.

luckytrouble367d ago

This timing isn't that weird. eSports are notorious money sinks, and organizations have been failing one after another the past few months as funds dry up and popularity wavers. Critical who is one of the runners of his own eSports organization has been extremely candid about the fact that there's really no money to be made, and a lot of suits that had their companies throw money at the concept are just starting to give up and move on.

Profchaos367d ago

Just to coincide with the CMA appeal woe is us

smolinsk367d ago

Wow and they have totally done it to them Self with zero innovation.

shinoff2183367d ago

Exactly. Biggest game in gaming and they crying. Stfu acti

ModsDoBetter367d ago

They really dropped the ball with COD ever since WW2 I’d say.

Year after year it’s just disappointment after disappointment and it only got worse with Warzone and MW2019 - seasonal progression, battle pass, goofy skins, not listening to player feedback, you name it.

merlox367d ago

Call of duty was only good when they were WWII. Activision should go back to how they started. Also, they can make the single player stories longer. Not everyone plays the multiplayer.

porkChop367d ago

A lot of people here couldn't even read the headline. This isn't about the games themselves, it's about the esports leagues.

shinoff2183366d ago

Put the money into it. You have the biggest game in gaming.

porkChop366d ago

Agreed. They can obviously afford it.

ChasterMies366d ago

If people don’t like playing the games as much, then why would they want to watch other people play it?
