I'm Not a Big Uncharted Fan

"I first played an Uncharted game about five years ago. I did not own a PS3 at the time, and it just so worked out that I was in a position to play through Uncharted 2 on friend’s console. I was beyond excited. Uncharted 2 was supposed to be incredible. After dozens of awards from all over the place, my expectations for the title were sky-high. After playing through the game, however, I was a little bit disappointed. The game was decent, no doubt, but I did not garner nearly the awe and amazement that so many other people felt.

Fast forward to the release of The Last of Us. Once again, Naughty Dog’s game releases to critical acclaim. There was a ton of hype surrounding the title’s release, and I caught onto the excitement. Furthermore, by this point I had already purchased a PS3 console, so I decided to pick up the Last of Us since I had a console to play on. After all, I had enjoyed many of Naughty Dog’s other games, maybe Uncharted 2 was the only one I wouldn’t like?" -- Playstation Enthusiast.

Not sure about internet breaking, but Doom and Overwatch are excellent, the more recent Wolfenstein was also very good, I love Uncharted but lets not pretend how its the only good game around, because that would be leaning way too heavily into fanboyism.

Uncharted 4 is a great game, all the Uncharted games are great. Uncharted 4 would not have sold 2.7 million copies in it's first week if it weren't, and the game is still a number one seller. You can't say it was because of hype, if that were the case every game that Microsoft publishes would have shot to the moon in sales and the console would have quadrupled it's sales just on company hype and fanboy hype. Hype does not make a game successful, great games are successful because they are great.

Anyway, the hype for Uncharted 4 is based on previous games and the studeo that developed the game.

Bad games no matter the hype almost always under perform in sales.

Everything is easy to judge critically in hindsight many years later, as the rest of the industry has advanced. Complaining about a 2007 title not living up to 2016 gameplay standards is beyond silly. Even 2009, or 2011. The industry evolves a lot in 5 years, much less almost 10 (since the original).

They said that they recently picked up the trilogy collection for $20 and played through them. Can't imagine any of them having the same impact if being played for the first time this year. (I know it says they played UC2 in 2011, but it sounds like they didn't touch the 1st and 3rd one until this year)

But yea, this article, at least its description here on N4G is deceptive. It leads the reader to believe they are talking about Uncharted 4, when in reality this is only a rant about Uncharted 1-3.

Its still not a very good way to enjoy a series where much of the appeal is the love of the characters and its increasing references to past exploits ei its own history. You would start Lord of the Rings on The Two Towers.

I'm the same way and even found the demo for Uncharted demo boring in 2008 but decided to give the full game a chance in 2009 when Uncharted 2 released and I loved it and all subsequent games since.

I love the Uncharted games, as well as the newest Tomb Raiders. Not just for the game play and characters, but I love the exotic locations these games generally take place in. I love exploring those worlds, because I have nothing like that where I live. So, it's a bit of an escape for me.

Even though I am like the biggest Uncharted and naughty dog fan there is and I loved all their games including Uncharted (a 9/10 from me personally) , it is not for everyone just like some find The Godfather movie boring even though it is hailed as one of the best films ever made by critics and many movie viewers alike.

I raspect opinions and this is a well written piece with reasons why. Coming from a site known as "playstationenthusiast.co m", there shouldn't be any blame of purposely hating on Sony, PS4, or Naughty Dog by the author as he had written some cool pieces in the past on that PS only site (at least one would hope so, stay classy N4G). A million+ times this. Not every PS4 owner likes every single Sony exclusive, and no game is liked by everyone. That is the fact. ;)

That said, Uncharted 4 is the best AAA title ever, IMO.

Two things:
1. Yes you are right. Believe it or not there are Xbox fans who don't like Halo.
2. The title of the article is 'Big Uncharted fan'. Just because you play a good game and like it doesn't mean you have to be a 'big fan' of the series. Mostly everyone who has every touched TLOU agrees its one of the greatest games ever made, but it doesn't mean you have to be head over heels with the story or ending... which as it turns out was a major point of contention.

Basically, it doesn't have to be all or nothing. You can appreciate an experience without being the 'biggest fan ever'.

I agree these posts generate a lot of heat and comments though I'm not sure many actually read them.
It's a shame though and it's not because tabloid paper like 'news' generate most view that you should keep approving, submitting them.
That s what many sites do for clicks I actually avoid these sites. I used to enjoy a few interesting articles from. OSP but those click baits put me off.
On the other hand gamers have the opportunity to trim that sort of articles and focus on better ones if they wish so. I'm not sure who's fault it is but it's all matter of good will I believe to make N4G better

These types of articles are the only things that N4G really reads or discusses though, so that's why you see so many posts like this. We can post big feature interviews with actual interesting content to read all we want, but the majority of people here just don't read those or want to discuss them. We've got an interview up for an incredibly interesting sci-fi adventure game called Divide in pending right now. Nobody's touching it. Our UC4 vs QB article is blowing up though (according to N4G).

This site could be a haven for interesting to read content, but people just ignore articles with depth, and hence the site's hottest posts are usually focused on topics like this or the one we posted earlier. Granted I'm not judging the quality of this article as I haven't read it, I'm sure it's fine, but it generated discussion and traffic so it's doing its job.

Again, this is a very good article talkin about some of the flaws of the game even though it was written by a site known as Playstationlifestyle and they gave the game a 10/10 on their review for UC4. They are just giving readers their opinions of what they think were flaws, even though the game is close to perfect in their eyes.

Lesson learn, don't judge a book by its cover (applies to person as well) and not everything is a hate piece.

I did, the author was taking about his feelings for the Uncharted series as a whole and not about Uncharted 4. This piece is about Uncharted, the series, and what his feeling towards it is, and not about him talking about uncharted 4 and not have had played it yet.

My comment was a reply to Sunny_D and his links to "everyone hates UC" and is a separate thing from this article topic but it's intend are the same; thus, that is why I was using UC4 in my post to reply to him as one of my statements came from one of his links.

I always read an article that I have intent to post. That is what I do. :)

My issue is not that they criticize the series. (Other than playing them many years after their original launch, which in itself is kind of unfair, the way the industry evolves as a whole) My biggest issue is that the article description is deceptive, making it sound as if this is a rant against UC4 without having even played it. Where are all these people when COD games get these sort of scores? Oh that's right, they're the ones preaching how 'no game can be perfect, or a 10/10, every game has some sort of fault, blemish, etc!' it's ridiculous.

I find things to be particularly dire here at N4G, where voicing any form of OPINION that may be in the minority will get you lambasted by the resident cult of fanatics (especially where this series is concerned.)

In the end, no game can appeal to everyone (just as it is with movies, books, music, you name it.) and that's where respecting other peoples opinions on the matter becomes important, no matter how much you disagree with it, because somewhere out there, someone else will, and they'll save themselves the trouble of...

Well, lets just put it this way. If i disliked Uncharted's 1-3, and felt particularly burned by the devs because oh i dunno, i was misled by reviews or whatever, and ended up buying something that was promised to be an EPIC adventure for the ages, and yet found what I actually received was simply Indiana Jones on rails, updated for the modern audience (humor, and 'whitty dialogue', etc.), with very little variation on mechanics or freedom in any way, well.... A person like me would do well to seek out a more grounded review that actually talks about the game for what it is, instead of what Naughty Dog (might be) paying reviewers to say it is.

It's sad that I actually had to write all of that out, because it seems sort of obvious, but, judging by the actually reviews its getting and by the constant damage control by not only the extremist fans, but also people who were responsible for making the game (and I actually quite enjoy Troy Bakers work in plenty of other games), it just goes to show you that there's some sort of agenda at play here, and it has nothing to do with actually talking about the real merits and qualities (or lack thereof) of the game.

The truth is there are many people like me who see this series for what it is, and that's simply a cheesy hollywood style, summer blockbuster with limited control that seems more like a glorified tech demo with a cliche story pasted over the top... Some people, like myself, look for more in a game than this surface level, one and done type deal that Naughty Dog seems to get praised for putting a shiny coat of paint over every few years (I know this will offend many of you, and for that.. i'm sorry. Sort of. But it is how I feel. it is my.. Opinion! =O )

Despite how downright deplorable you may have imagined me to sound in that last paragraph, there's absolutly nothing in there discouraging anyone from playing, or loving the absolute christ out of these games.. But dont try to silence those that don't. Our voice is just as important as yours when it comes to the matter.

(Disclaimer: have only played Uncharted 2, and have tried to play the Uncharted Collection to no avail.. its simply not for me. I tired.)

TL;DR No game is perfect, so the extreme fanatics taking this over the top need to accept that not everyone sees things through their eyes (again, seems obvious, but is apparently, not.)

PS. I expect to have lot of disagrees, so do prove me wrong. (or right, whatever helps you sleep at night.)

The game for me at least is not as good as Uncharted 2. UC 4 has the best story in the series but the worst pacing.I also have mixed feelings of the mp. The movement and combat is dynamic, but the Mystics and sidekicks disrupt the pace of the game and feel gimmicky.

Really, UC2 and UC3 do plenty in places that UC4 doesn't try to get to the scale of in terms of longevity of scene aside from the 4x4 levels. Helicopter chase across rooftops and tank chase in UC2, parkour and boat graveyard in part 3 are 2 are my picks of the entire series. Before long a more measured assessment of each Uncharted game will come. Overall, I feel part 2 is the most required play for story, pacing, gunplay, setting.

If I wanted opinions, I would goto Twitter, search #Uncharted4, and read dozens if not hundreds of opinions in 140 characters or less. I would read the comments on N4G on Uncharted 4 related news. Notice I said news and not reviews, because reviews are just one person's opinion. Pieces like this (and reviews) should have their own special section on N4G, because otherwise, the site should stick to industry news that gamers may be interested in. E3 is just weeks away and I have no idea what to expect.
