PlayStation wins Black Friday among Millenials; Nintendo slides further among GenXers

When presented with a sales promotion, are Millennials more likely to shift their video game buying habits compared to older gamers? Between Microsoft’s Xbox, Sony’s PlayStation, and Nintendo’s Wii, who “won” Black Friday by enticing gamers to their brands?

This generation belongs to Sony.

Picnic3071d ago (Edited 3071d ago )

'Belongs'. It belongs to all of them. The implicit idea that only the one that sells the most really matters is unhealthy because it encourages the others not to try for their own buyers any more. Which would then give the console that's selling the most less reason to try as well.

Microsoft has wilfully chosen to forfeit not trying to sell the very most consoles by, for the 14th consecutive year, still charging for online play. This may be worth in fees at least the cost of a console itself. Yes, Sony now charges for online play but, for 9 years and counting on PS3 they haven't. Microsoft (and Nintendo, due to their dominance in handheld profit helping them) will simply never be quite as reliant on the main console to keep afloat. Sony, with declined HDTV and cinema box office sales, want the highest console sales more than their competitors (who are doing better on attach rates) want them.

Yourmommasaid3071d ago

Wait...what? I understand the "belongs to all" part but your explanation didn't make sense!

Clarence3070d ago

WTH are you talking about? Each company wants their console to sale. No company puts out a product for it to fell. I mean why not say M$ wants their console to have the highest sales based on the fact that windows phone, surface pro, Zune, have all been failures.

Your comment makes no sense at all.

Bottom line the PS4 owns this gen.

Captain_TomAN943070d ago

A few things matter:

1) Market Share
2) Profit
3) Mind Share

Sony has won all 3.

It's funny in the article the 7% difference on BF for millennials to the writer was a huge difference. But the 4% for gen X was just a slight increase lol.

Spotie3071d ago

Well, the first percentage is nearly twice the second, so that's one difference.

Also, what did those percentages represent, in terms of actual numbers? 4% of millenials could be more than 4% of gen x.

There's also the understanding that it means more because of the demographics and how each of them generally buys products.

Or did none of that occur to you?

ThePope3070d ago (Edited 3070d ago )

@Spotie

When talking about such small percetages it doesn't matter that 7 is nearly double 4. They could only represent a fraction of a difference as the sample size is only 250K. Which is quite small when you break it down.

Neither of us know what the percentages represent. What we do know for a FACT is that Gen X people have considerably more buying power than millennials. SO the 4% could actually, and most likely does represent a group of people who DID and WILL spend more. Which would make the incredibly small difference mean even less. Or did none of that occur to you???

Spotie3070d ago

Your math is all over the place.

First, the article shows an 8% increase for PS4 versus a 7% decrease for XB1. That changes the difference from 1% to 16% for millenials. That's pretty damn big.

On the other hand, the Xbox lead drops from 5% to 4%.

If you can't figure out why the former is big and the latter is not, there's no hope for you.

zackdollars3071d ago

From my experience, it seems the high failure rate of 360s turned younger people off. Compounded with the fact that PS4 has more power, I can see why PS4 is more attractive to millennials. (Personally, I own both consoles, and I have put much more time into Xbox One as a "middle aged" gamer.)

DarkOcelet3071d ago (Edited 3071d ago )

I kindly disagree.

The reason i went from 360 to PS4 aside from the whole backlash when the Xone was announced was because MS stopped supporting the X360. It had nothing for three years except for Forza/Gears/Halo while PS3 had one exclusive after the other with tons of variety and not just sequels.

I got an XOne right now and i have to say, so far i am happy and i really hope they keep supporting it with more exclusives other than Forza/Gears/Halo. Quantum Break and Scalebound looks great and hopefully their gameplay is great too and if they keep churning out exclusives, then it will be wonderful.

Although so far, the PS4 have the upper hand when it comes to the amount of games from exclusives to 3rd party games.

This gen is looking awesome so far and we need more competition from both the PS4 and the Xone because that means more amazing games for us the gamers.

Ch1d0r13071d ago

Wow! I didn't know they stopped supporting for 3 years. So they kept offering you the same dishes over and over, haha. Yeah have fun and game on on what what ever device or OS you choose.

Ch1d0r13071d ago

First off,

Great for you on owning both consoles and being brave to make those purchases. I can see people who like to brag about graphics and game resolution purchase the PS4, it is obviously the winner there when you compare multiplatform games. Im 31 and still game and in fact i enjoyed introducing the younger generations in my family to gaming at very young age. When my little sister was 3 i gave her the control and as girls are they like princesses and stuff, so Fat Princes was her goto game. Now shes a Minecraft and Pokemon Nerd.

Anyways yeah i was turned off by the RROD and i fact i contribute that to why PS3 and 360 were so neck and neck each year or else they would of gotten their A** stomped. And thats something that a lot of people don't see, they just look at the numbers. But the history to why the numbers were what they were is much more important.

3071d ago
ThePope3071d ago

Actually that's not true. In most of the world the warranty of the X360 was 1 year. MS acknowledged the issue after about a year and a half. So you only really have about 6 months where gamers were replacing them on there own. On top of that how many Actully failed in that specific 6 month time frame?

MS last ten took 50% of Sonys market share and it had nothing to do with RROD. Are you trying to say 20, 30, 40 MILLION gamers replaced their x360 on their own? That's just dumb. Sony was the only one that got its a&@ stomped in market share.

Spotie3070d ago

Most of the world accounted for a relatively small percentage of 360 sales, Pope, especially early on. The vast majority of sales were in the US, where the warranty was something more like 90 days. That makes for a considerably larger period of time where people were buying their own replacements than you'd like people to believe.

Also, considering it was Nintendo who ended up on top, how in the hell do you attribute half of Sony's marketshare from the previous generation to Xbox?

Loadedklip3071d ago

I think DRM, always online, kinect forced, High price point WITH weaker powe, and Microsofts' attitude towards gamers complaints had more affect than what you said.

zackdollars3070d ago

The price point was a huge factor. The Kinect was a total waste. The only thing I use it for is to pause a movie by voice.

madmonkey013071d ago

What is a millenial or a genxer?

Eonjay3071d ago

Well, according to the article:
Millennial (ages 18 – 35)
Middle Age (ages 36 – 55)

ABizzel13071d ago

Sounds about right.

For the most part the millennials grew up in the fifth or sixth generation where PS dominated with the PS1 / PS2, so they have more of an affiliation overall towards PS and probably 50% Nintendo 50% Xbox for the older mins (27 - 35), and 90% Xbox 10% Nintendo for the younger mins (18 - 26).

The Middle Age group grew up with NES and SNES, so they have those great Nintendo memories, but they've also been though the PS1, PS2, Xbox 360. So their preference is all over the place, but they're much more likely to give a core Nintendo console a chance than the Millennials. They're also probably parents, and are more likely to buy a Nintendo console for their young kids.

DonBugen3070d ago

ABizzel, I have to disagree with you. If the dividing line is 35, it means that it's still 'millenials' who grew up with the NES and Master System. They grew up with an Atari or a ColecoVision, or even a Home Pong.

So kinda, this is comparing people who grew up with gaming vs. people who didn't, as gamers in that generation are so small of a minority that it really doesn't statistically matter.

Griever3071d ago (Edited 3071d ago )

They are demographics (groups) in the field of Marketing. People born during certain decades are grouped together because they are within the same age range and have similar needs or preferences. For example Baby Boomers (1940s-60s), Generation X (1960s to 80s), Generation Y or Millenials (1980s-early 2000s). For example, Marketers will market the latest technology to millenials because they are were born during the hitech era, antiaging products to Generation X because they are getting old and retirement homes/vacations etc. to Baby Boomers because they are elderly and are likely have money to spend since they are free from responsiblities of children.

madmonkey013071d ago

thanks, well written explanation, i had assumed it was some made up teenage word like "Prolly or Bae"

uth113071d ago

@madmonkey- Prolly isn't some new word. I remember my friends using it long ago. Maybe it's just coming back

Benchm4rk3070d ago

@madmonkey

Lol I cringe everytime I see or hear the word "Bae". Really annoys me

Griever3071d ago

You are welcome. :-) Glad to be of help. I am an MBA so I am familiar with the business field.

marioJP873071d ago

Having both, my lame X1 will be the one to go pretty soon.

Picnic3071d ago

'Millenials'. What scrawny marketing detritus chose to imply that someone born in 1980 only really existed as someone worth caring about when the year 2000 (the millenium) came?

Spotie3071d ago

It's about more than marketing, and has more to do with those people becoming a force, economically and otherwise, at about the age of twenty.

DonBugen3070d ago

Completely agree with you, Picnic. Besides, it's ridiculous and bunches together a widely diverse group. I'm thirty, and I can guarantee you my gaming and buying habits differ greatly from that of a fourteen-year-old. But hey, we're all "millenials"?

Microsoft’s Surface and Xbox hardware revenues take a big hit in Q3

Microsoft just posted the third quarter of its 2024 fiscal financial results. The software maker made $61.9 billion in revenue and a net income of $21.9 billion during Q3. Revenue is up 17 percent, and net income has increased by 20 percent.

Xbox content + services up 62% while hardware down 31%... seems about right with the way they tout you don't need the hardware to play. People can play on their phones or smart tv or other means. I don't hardly play on my consoles directly since getting devices like the logitech g-cloud and ps portal. Which is to also say I have been playing more digital than physical because of these devices.

solideagle6h ago

you should apply in MS PR team buddy, I think you will do a great job in my humble opinion :)

Sonic18814h ago

I thought darthv72 and Obscure_Observer already work for Microsoft 🤔

dveio3h ago

MS: "Xbox services and content without AB up 1%, with AB up 62%. Hardware down 31%. In total a loss of 350 mill."

darthv72: "Seems about right."

MS: "Excuse m ..."

darthv72: "I don't hardly play on my consoles directly."

MS:

Cacabunga6h ago

I can tell people like you are an absolute minority..

If service is up means their fans and fanboys accepted this model and subscribed to it. The near future you will see a big decline because the service is saturated.

shinoff21835h ago

But that's been ms for years. When things aren't going their way they try to change the way things are said. For instance console sales are down, they stop telling how many sold instead telling us how many hours spent in halo or headshots. So it makes sense console sales down just say people are playing on more devices then previous. What they won't say is how many xbox players jumped ship to ps5.

Cacabunga4h ago

Hardware sales are so bad that Sony and Nintendo are blowing the sales off the water with their hardware.

If Xbox are losers, others aren’t..
Xbox already tried everything with Xbox live then subscriptions went down so much that they had to find something else. Their fans subscribed then reached saturation rather quickly.

Hardware and exclusive games is where it’s at! Keep gamers excited, announce decent software and people will support you

itsmebryan22m ago

@shin
Well keep it simple Sony 's operating income is down 26% and Microsoft's is up 32%. No MS spin there, just facts. 😉
Cheers

Xbox hardware revenue tanks to lowest point of Xbox Series generation

Profchaos8h ago

I'm not surprised surface is struggling they aren't relevant anymore

XBManiac8h ago

Too expensive hardware when others offer the same or more for less? Good work, Green Team.

SimpleDad7h ago(Edited 7h ago)

"Despite some early successes for Xbox games on rival platforms, Xbox hardware is down by a massive 31 percent this quarter."
"Without Activision Blizzard, Microsoft’s overall gaming revenue would have actually declined this quarter."
"Xbox content and services would have only been up a single percent without Activision Blizzard..."
"It looks like next quarter is going to be a similar story for gaming at Microsoft, too."

That is crazy... so A/B/K is carrying the whole Xbox gaming.
Oh and Microsoft will be fine. Windows, Office and Cloud are growing with each pc purchase.

purple1017h ago

Activision: "we gonna need a bigger rucksack/backpack please"

Microsoft: "why's that"

Activision: "to carry yo' weak ass'

Profchaos6h ago(Edited 6h ago)

Top brass have also wanted to start seeing returns on the 100 billion they have put into various Xbox related moves so seeing more multiplatform games is highly likely especially from abk

It's basically saying that PlayStation is the reason Xbox is afloat right now thinks to Ps5 versions of COD

Kornholic5h ago

So basically PS and PC gamers' money is keeping Xbox on life support.

Sony Patents To Prevent You From In-Game Harassment By Reading Your Emotions

A new patent recently published by Sony wants to gather biometric data of gamers to track whether one is being harassed using AI tools.

Profchaos1d 9h ago (Edited 1d 9h ago )

I hope this is one of those patents that never comes to fruition.

I already dislike the fact you can pay a significant amount for a online service buy associated games and content on said service and get banned from that service over potentially a misunderstanding the bans are already handed out for flimsy reasons

I'd rather see money invested in a ban that simply removes the offensive players ability to communicate with unknown players allow them to continue party chats with friends but not with Joe blow on cod.

exputers1d 5h ago

Agreed. Blizzard recently banned a college Overwatch 2 player who's dependent for saying "shit." Pretty harsh.

Profchaos14h ago(Edited 14h ago)

How rediculas really. You can't say a word that's allowed in most PG films and prime time TV but the game is based around killing the enemy team using guns, explosives etc.

It's just backwards.

just_looken16h ago

What your talking about is called block list

In 2006 a spaceship dropped of the playstation 3/xbox 360 i say that that generation was the last great gen with game functions/tech that has yet to comeback

Anyhow the playstation 3 if you block listed a id they could not talk to you in chatroom with either text or voice. But that was pre mind fucked 2018 when people were more human than sheep.

But hey gta 6 is coming out billion dollar budget without a single player custom character creator and without singeplayer coop off/online something saints row 1-3 had on the xbox 360.

Cmon where's the pictures of your children. Don't hold out on them.

H91d 1h ago

At this rate I feel Sony will eventually sell a room to play games in it where they can monitor your every breath

jambola21h ago

I genuinely get a bit worried sometimes when a friend says something that could be offensive In a party
Because I have no trouble believing some bans would happen when in a private party for saying something wrong

SegaSaturn6691d ago

I want them to censor erotic content by measuring my groin temperature so i dont get too distracted while playing black ops 2.

Popsicle1d ago

Terrible idea. Not only do I not consent to providing my biometric data, the potential for mishandling biometric data is almost a certainty. Positive stress and negative stress can produce similar changes in biometrics. Interpreting the precise emotion a person is feeling is not only invasive but could be easily misconstrued. I hope this never comes to fruition.
