Super Mario Runs Left to Right Because Our Brains Say So

Ever wonder why side-scrolling video games from the 80's and 90's almost always scroll in a single direction—left to right? This might seem like a silly question (duh...it just makes sense that way), but if you really think about it, it is a little odd. Why do games always scroll that way?

SaveFerris3328d ago

I thought this was because the early game developers designed it that way, and everyone else just went with the flow and copied it.

i'd always assumed the same.

i mean does it feel weird scrolling to the left because that's not the way we're used to or is it something in our brains wired to prefer it that way?

well, i guess according to this psychologist it's our brains fault. ^_^

You would think it's because we read left to right. So everything starts on the left, and ends on the right, but Nintendo developed this game. Japanese writing goes from right to left.

Never really thought about it. Now that I do think about it, it's not even that interesting. lol

I guess the Japanese version, mario runs from right to left.

Honestly, this is being made a bigger deal of than it is.

The Psychologist found a bias for left to right movement.

Remember, this study was done decades after we have gone through countless platformers, etc, the vast majority of which where left to right movement.

Going both ways is what made Metroid and Zelda so great back then.

smashman983328d ago

Everybody should know this especially after the studies published by the LLVCU some people see things as left to right while others see them as right to left its why us americans drive on the wrong side of the road.

We drive on the free side of the road.

When I run a mental movie of the classic super Mario he goes left, I can't get my brain to make him go right. It's really weird when I try I feel a bit of pressure in my head.

It's surely as simple as they're pandering to woke culture, terrified of being 'cancelled' due to racial stereotyping.

If that's the case, its pretty pathetic. It's obvious he was designed as an Italian pastiche and that's all part of the fun! If people are offended by that, that's their problem. Let them miss out on great Mario games due to their warped ideologies. They can enjoy their sanctimony instead.

There's a vocal minority that get bogged down in this kind of nonsense and we shouldn't let them ruin everyone else's enjoyment. I swear people used to be thicker skinned, these days they're just thick.

Get off YouTube and talk to people in the real world.

I dont know where people get this weird misconception that because a character is crated in a certain country, that means that is their ethnicity. He was and always has been italian.

dmonee463d ago

I thought originally his mustache was supposed to be his mouth but they couldn't get it quite right. He probably was supposed to be Japanese. All I can say is “Cancelled!!!!!!!” Nice knowing you Mario!.

Knightofelemia463d ago

No he is a Japanese guy born in Italy. Who cares the games are fun to play and he is a popular character that helped put the NES on the map.
