That's it, 1080p/680fps standard.

you heard it here first.. ;)

CARROT1809943472d ago

they should have made it 4k/60fps, a lot of these indies could run at 4k on next gen

one2thr3472d ago

I remember reading something that Trine 2 can be played at native 4k resolution, but that was some time ago when I seen that comment/article.

lameguy3472d ago

They can't. Both Xbox One and PS4 only have HDMI 1.4 out - not 2.0 (for 60fps)

So right now, with the current hardware iteration, which will change as new models show up most likely, both will be limited to 4k/30fps. Also, 4k 3D isn't supported with version 1.4 either I think.

Outthink_The_Room3472d ago (Edited 3472d ago )

I think this was mentioned at the reveal, but PS4 doesn't output a native rendered 4K image, aside from playback.

I can't find the exact article, but Cerny said something like 4K isn't really what this generation was built for, so they decided against 4K native rendering capabilities.

Maybe PS4 could upscale to 4K on the software side, but from what I remember, it won't be native.

::edit:: Found the link http://ps4daily.com/2013/04...

XanderZane3472d ago

It could probably run on the SNES at 120fps. Sounds like it's just a weak 2D shooter. They should have. The XB1 can output at 4K. It's HDMI cable is 4K ready. I think the it's the same with the PS4 as well. Once you're over 60fps anyways, the eyes can't tell the difference.

mikeslemonade3472d ago

I don't understand how in theory 680 frames would make it unplayable. Try using a 600hz TV maybe??

Real life is infinite frames and it's not unplayable lol

As long as you got a screen that match the frames then it's fine.

pyroxxx3472d ago

no one has the tv big enough where 4K would make sense,..

bmf73643472d ago

@lameguy

HDMI was something Microsoft didn't implement until later in the Xbox 360's lifecycle, and PS3 never had HDMI in the 20GB launch model. People haven't generally complained about Xbox though like that because they kept breaking anyway.

mark3214uk3472d ago

i think they both support HDMI 2.0 xbone shipped with 1, and i have a hdmi 2.0 in ps4 now but the ps4 does not have the software on there to enable upscaling, they said (i think) that both consoles with support 4k for movies ect just not gaming

3472d ago
Guwapo773472d ago

PyroXXX - you comment doesn't make sense.

Sandy_Claws3472d ago (Edited 3472d ago )

mikeslemonade - lol what? 600hz TVs don't exist. The fastest ones are 240, and most of those are still truly 60hz but with interpolation and frame smoothing.

And please don't say Plasma. 600HZ Plasma is NOT its refresh rate and not the same.

UltraNova3471d ago

Putting aside HDMI's limitations thats a "Unlimited Framerate" box I would surely like to tick on a game that could run at 6_wtf!!!_80 FPS !!!!

Perjoss3471d ago

"no one has the tv big enough where 4K would make sense,.."

I do, and I'd be very surprised if I was the only one :P

Jaqen_Hghar3471d ago

lol a man wouldn't have the TV for anything above 60 frames or 1080p anyway so it may just make him depressed he couldn't see the game for what it was. It would be like playing Uncharted on a CRT TV

DarXyde3471d ago

@mikeslemonade

Real life is not "unlimited frames". How does that even make sense? "Frames" are literally limited by human sensation (input) and perception (output). We can perceive a lot, but only under artificial settings that don't resemble reality at all.

Try waving your hand in front of your face and notice the afterimage it leaves. That's not unlimited. Not even 60fps.

UltraNova3471d ago

@DarXyde

Its not that we can perceive anything faster than 60fps man, its knowing that your system can actually achieve very high framerates thats enticing (to that minority at least which I belong too). Thats why ultra high end PC gaming will always be overkill, especially when 4K 60+FPS becomes somewhat standard for the power userbase.

uth113472d ago

I hope not, it's hard enough to count pixels when they bump it up to 60fps, how the hell are we supposed to count them at 680??

Clunkyd3472d ago

Over 60fps is just too much for me. It feels like im moving a camera at high speed, which ruins the gameplay. 50-60 FPS is the sweet spot

starchild3472d ago

Hahaha I bet you have never played a game at 120fps. It only makes things better. Controller response is excellent and the clarity of the image while in motion is on a whole different level. 60fps is great, but 120fps is a lot better.

And 50 to 60fps is the sweet spot? That's ridiculous. Variable framerates like that result in stutter, which is very undesirable. Even if you locked at 50fps it would still produce judder on a typical 60Hz or 120Hz display because 50fps doesn't divide evenly into those refresh rates, therefor the frame cadence will be irregular.

On a 60Hz display a solid 60fps is the best. A solid 30fps is the next best.

Clunkyd3472d ago

Not everybody likes what you like. I've played games up to 90 fps. I feel motion sickness with frames that high.

BTW, Look at all the butthurt PC gamers X'D

yezz3472d ago (Edited 3472d ago )

@Clunkyd

I'm a console gamer who plays most games with 30fps but even I know that higher the frame rate, the better..

You get motion sickness from a SMOOTHER picture?? That doesn't even make any sense. If anything, it should be the other way around.. Maybe you're sitting too close to the screen or something¿

tee_bag2423471d ago (Edited 3471d ago )

Just stop digging. Starchild told it like it is so you should start learning rather than being so defensive. Less FPS gives motion sickness, not higher FPS. It's not a matter of opinion either, it simply a fact.

Why o why3471d ago

Starchild is right but some graphics engines can invoke motion sickness is some people. It wasn't down to the fps. No increase in fos would of stopped that.

Future_20153472d ago

What is in space we brawl? never heard of it. If any of you delusional people think that a ps4 can do 4K games you have another thing coming

DanteVFenris6663472d ago

"Face palm" you've never seen the game so it's funny you say that. Think of it like a nes game. Yes if the ps4 had 4 k it deffinatley could with it's power to make a ness game 4k. Like seriously maybe you should have seen the game first...

ABizzel13471d ago

@Future_2015

The only reason PS4 can't do 4k is because of the HDMI 1.4 limitation, it has been said multiple times that some developers could get their games running in 4k on the PS4 if they wanted / could.

purpleblau3472d ago

this is kinda a lame selling point. I'm pretty sure if you write a DOS quality game and try to run on a PS4 it'll give you more than 680fps. Pointless article anyway.

frezhblunts3471d ago

But its not, a lot of games aren't hitting those numbers constantly

Neonridr3469d ago

lol, clearly you didn't read my comment closer..

I said 1080p / 680 FPS (not 60).

It was a joke to relate to the FPS numbers the game was hitting when they first ran it.

Kribwalker3471d ago

With a meta score like this you'd think they'd try to make a decent game instead of tryin to max out FPS. 58 meta score....ewww

Snookies123472d ago (Edited 3472d ago )

Hey, 680 FPS is the future of gaming... Lol, honestly, I'm fine anywhere above 30 for most games. 40-60 is the sweet spot, when it starts going over that it's a little too smooth. I dunno how to describe it really, it just kinda feels odd to me.

Neonridr3472d ago

it's like watching movies on newer TV's that have like 240Hz refresh rate. Those fancy post-processing effects that interpolate the image by adding in extra frames can create an awkward experience when watching stuff. It gives it a sort of "sped up" look to it. The soap opera effect is what it is commonly referred to. I would imagine that gaming could suffer from that same effect if the FPS were too high.

starchild3472d ago (Edited 3472d ago )

That's because those TVs are adding extra frames that aren't in the source material. As you mentioned, they use interpolation to guess what the extra frames would be and this results in an unnatural look.

Games and movies/video are very different. I have never felt that games at a high framerate feel unnatural. Quite the opposite actually; the animation and camera movement becomes more natural and believable.

It might feel odd at first for those that have spent their entire lives playing console games, but once you get used to the lack of blur and the smoother motion you realize that it actually approximates real life more closely and thus feels more natural.

Human perceptivity varies from person to person, but most evidence supports the idea that most people can perceive progressively smoother motion well beyond 200fps. I can easily appreciate the difference between 60fps and 120fps, but I've never had the chance to really compare framerates above that.

GarrusVakarian3472d ago (Edited 3472d ago )

In my experience, you get used to it, then end up preferring it. I remember seeing my friend play Skyrim on his PC at 60fps after playing it for hundreds of hours on the 360 at 30fps and I thought it looked 'fake' and way too smooth.

I'm fine with a solid 30fps, like in Forza Horizon 2, but I'd choose 60fps every time if I had the choice.

Neonridr3472d ago

yeah, I was more or less referring to say something like 120FPS.

BenRage33471d ago

That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. I remember playing Skyrim on the PS3 for hours upon hours and I kept thinking how much I was missing out in higher resolution and frame rate. After buying the PC version, I wouldn't even go back to the console version.

60fps makes all the difference. Too smooth? Bullocks. It far more realistic with a higher frame rate.

bouzebbal3472d ago

killzone: SF and FIFA feel very odd to me at 60fps. i know what you feel.

GarrusVakarian3472d ago

Play Fifa for an hour, then go back and try the last-gen versions. You'll more than likely go running back to the current-gen version.

bouzebbal3472d ago

@Lukas_Japonicus:
yeah man, i regret my purchase. i hope there is someone ready to trade in with PES2015 :/

dcj05243472d ago

200FPS is the most I can go until I stop noticing changes. So silky smooth

3472d ago
xTheMercenary_3472d ago

@lets_go yeah their is, if you could find a monitor that is 200hz, then that monitor would display 200fps if your machine is capable. Well i know i've seen 200hz monitors.

Sandy_Claws3472d ago

Guwapo - no, they aren't. That's not the same. It's just a number that manufacturers advertise, but it's not a true 600hz refresh rate.

JP13693472d ago

Technically, 30 and 60 are the sweet spots, as anything in between opens you up to screen tearing or judder.

Patrick_pk443472d ago

It feels odd for console owners, but everyone adjusts to it easily. Games are suppose to be smooth, anything below 60fps is terrible to play.

TWB3471d ago

Why though ?

Ratchet and Clank series, Jak n Daxter series and Dragonball Z Budokai series are the first 3 series that come to my mind and are 60 FPS. I dont know about the spinoffs but all the main games were 60 FPS.

Before that many NES games (and I suppose SNES games too) were 60 FPS too so I dont see how its suddenly a new thing to the console crowd.

"While you’ll be able to watch the full interview quite soon"

So you thought you'll squeeze another article out of it, knowing that the title alone will draw the crowds in

Dudebro903472d ago

Gotta get those clicks somehow.

Add em to you're ad block.

MegaRay3472d ago

Haha. Why dualshockers get so much hate? That website isnt that bad

Angeljuice3472d ago

It actually has a much better standard of journalism than most sites. Definitely one of the better ones. Plus Abriael's spelling and grammar puts a lot of native English speakers' to shame.

spacedelete3472d ago

they already have your click as you entered the article giving them hits.

GarrusVakarian3472d ago (Edited 3472d ago )

I don't get this hate towards Abriael and his article habits. So what if he's squeezing another article out of it? It literally harms no one, and he makes his living from this.

I'm sure that all the people who bitch and moan about what he does would do it the exact same way if they worked for a gaming site and it was how they earned a living.

Seriously, ask yourself, why does it offend you?

Hellsvacancy3472d ago

I didn't say it offended me, I just pointed out an obvious fact, what's wrong with wanting to read the entire interview?

Are we now to expect more of these "teaser" type articles? maybe future interviews should be episodic
