DriveClub Release Was A Disaster, Let's Get Over It

Chris from The Games Cabin writes "The recent release of DriveClub has been a bit of a disaster; and that's putting it lightly....

That said, it's not all doom and gloom. The game still works (sort of, more on that below) and is intense fun with plenty of fast cars, brilliant tracks and gorgeous environments - what more could you ask for? Well, a stable launch would have been nice, but we're over it."

It was an awful launch. But games launching terribly are starting to become more common, and truth be told I doubt DriveClub will be the last one.

But there's no point crying over it. It'll happen again and again because companies can get away with it, even if they get backlash from customers.

LackTrue4K3484d ago

no worry's, trading this game in for GTA5.

(insert happy face here)

PeaSFor3484d ago (Edited 3484d ago )

i purchased the season pass this afternoon, because i do enjoy the game for what it is(and honestly couldnt care less about mixed reviews from bloggers), its like if PGR gameplay and Motorstorm AI had a child ...and was wrapped in golden swagoo.

Moe-Gunz3484d ago

The game that suffered from even worse launch issues?

Mega243484d ago

A simple public beta would have sufficed to avoid the mess, but then again, games are launching as alphas this days. It will still happen if fanboys stop being... well fanboys.

3-4-53484d ago

It's not what it should have been, but the game is a good base to build off of for a Drive Club 2, which could be pretty good if they add some more content.

The game already looks good enough.

asiatico3484d ago

We won't have to wait for drive club 2. Within the next 3 months most of the issues should be fixed. Plus the free monthly dlc and updates are going to continually make it better. But yes future iterations of this game should be amazing considering what they did with driveclub.

Starbucks_Fan3484d ago (Edited 3484d ago )

Bad launches are happening too much lately. I don't think I'm preordering a game ever again.

cooksauce3484d ago

The Phantom Pain would like to have a word with you...

StormLegend3484d ago

How many articles of DC will we get? OMG shut up already about this game...

TheWackyMan3484d ago

The pro-sony rhetoric will never stop. N4G will continue to be terrible.

Psychotica3484d ago

Sometimes I miss the simpler days when you bought a game on a cartridge and it just worked..

psvitamanfan3484d ago

Lets team up and create a new n64 game! The graphics will be crap but at least we wont have to push out patches!

Shineon3483d ago

Let's do Dreamcast instead,we've never saw its full potential

psvitamanfan3483d ago

@shineon, nah, too many games coming out for the dreamcast these days. Wanna go really old skool, maybe amiga. Sod it, let's redesign naughts and crosses on paper.

Retroman3484d ago

those-were-the-good-ol-days... ...SNES--anyone??

NotAFanboyJustReal3484d ago

Personally, next gen has been a disaster so far. Empty promises, unfinished bugged games(cough) Betafield 4, Server issues, delays, microtransaction s,PRE-planned DLC,(Destiny) etc. Seriously, if you're a racing fan, you probably already have Forza Horizon 2, or are waiting for Gran Turismo. DriveClub is not a great game, but it's pretty fun nonetheless. I still think it should have been a 19.99 game on the PSN store as the content is seriously lacking.

OrangePowerz3484d ago (Edited 3484d ago )

Most these things haven't anything to do with next gen as most of it is for all platforms including PC (BF4)and last gen (GTA 5 servers).

Are you really complaining for pre planned DLC of Destiny? WoW had areas in classic blocked off that haven't been used until Cataclysm. That's planning ahead to make development easier and less costly.

As for DC should have been 20 bucks. How much do you think it costs to make a game like that? The amount of content isn't really that far off from other racing games like that.

Torque_CS_Lewith3484d ago

Closest competitor would be FM5. 200 cars, 4 times more than DC which means 4 times more licencing costs. Even more in fact because more manufacturera were featured.
Real life tracks, lots of them. Those dont come cheap to replicate or licence.
Dedicated online servers.
1080/60
Top Gear licencing
More game modes

DC lacks in content and this has been echoed throughout many previews and reviews.

OrangePowerz3483d ago

Can't compare FM5 to DC. DC is an arcade racer and for an arcade racer that's a normal amount of cars. If you want to compare it you can compare it to games like PGR, Blur and so on. Many reviewers seem to never have played games loke these before and feel the need to make incorrect comparisons like yourself.

As for the licensing for FM. They have long standing contracts with the manufacturers and track companies so they didn't have to particularly shell out a lot specifically for FM5.

Torque_CS_Lewith3483d ago

Fine. The last PGR had more than twice the cars at 140 cars.
Need for Speed Shift had 80 cars (60% more than DC) and replicated race tracks, more licences for tracks and car manufacturers.
Blur had 70 cars, 40% more than DC. More licencing money.

Face it, the reviews are right, there is a massive lack of content compared to other racers.

Also, licences are are renewed as needed, there is no buy once and you keep forever deal. Each Forza's car list requires a new and separate licence. There are no carry overs unless an exclusive deal is struck(see Porsche deal with EA)

OrangePowerz3483d ago (Edited 3483d ago )

You are comparing sequels that use already existing assets from the previous game with a completely new game.

40% more sounds huge but it's 50 vs 70 cars.

Licensing deals are made for several years/games in advance. You have no idea about game development.

60FPS on PS5: Unofficial PS5 'FPS Boost' mods are radically improving PS4 back compat

Digital Foundry : Whether it's via FPS Boost or bespoke software upgrades, backwards compatibility on the current-gen consoles delivered an unexpected delight - the ability to liberate older console games from their 30fps limits, running them at 60 frames per second or even higher. FPS Boost did the business for Xbox Series consoles on an impressive range of titles, but there was always the sense that PS5 could do more. It's a hunch that checks out as a range of frame-rate unlocks are available for PS5, covering many must-have games - the major caveat being that only exploitable consoles running on older firmwares are invited to the party.

you love to see new life being breathed into older titles but damn the process to get there. It should be automatic that these work for everyone... not just those who exploit their systems. Really wish Sony and MS would keep this program going officially.

Psychonaut85104d ago

Damn this sucks. I want this shit so bad, but I’m not jailbreaking my console. And frankly I shouldn’t have to. I’m not a tech person, but is it really that hard for developers to unlock the framerate? Or would that have to be a large patch?

dveio104d ago (Edited 104d ago )

"but is it really that hard for developers to unlock the framerate?"

I guess it's not.

But it has become a profitable business if you do so.

So no one would pay for only the framerate patched to being unlocked. So studios need to offer more than that.

But this would take more time, polishing and would cost more money. So they shy away, but won't unlock the framerate, either.

That's just my personal assumption. But from what I can comprehend technically, it shouldn't be difficult to unlock framerates via a patch for older games.

... if it hadn't became a business.

RaidenBlack104d ago (Edited 104d ago )

frame-rate unlock should be free ...
We've seen many devs offer free patches and updates to pretty old PC titles, even bonuses ... so why can't devs offer the frame unlock patch for free (in consultation with the platform-producers) for a title from just a generation earlier?

Einhander1972104d ago

RaidenBlack

"frame-rate unlock should be free ..."

Obviously the result of that thinking is that developers aren't even going to do it.

If they had been allowed to charge $5-10 you would see incentivized developers doing it way more often.

People just always want everything for free, but it's not free to make the patch, people have to code it then other people have to test it, and there will always be other costs involved.

If people want dollar store gaming then expect to get what you pay for.

shinoff2183103d ago (Edited 103d ago )

Raiden I might be wrong but last I thought it cost money to put patches out on consoles.

As far as me paying for it, I'm not all that interested tbh. Not enough to pay for it with older games, and newer games have been pretty decent about it for the most part.

dumahim104d ago

Sounds like the modder has to go in to make changes to unlock it on a game by game basis. "Simple" enough to do it unofficially, but to have it done officially, they need someone to go in a make that change, put out a patch and put it through certification, which I believe is not necessarily a cheap thing to do. It's questionable if going through this would then give them enough sales to make it worthwhile.

Inverno104d ago

Many games still have physics tied to framerate, i think it's cause they wouldn't want to go in and do anything extra. Then there's the 10 dollar upgrades they rather charge. The problem is that there's no compromise, cause if I could mod my PS4 and all I'd lose is online play then id jailbreak it immediately. Mods have done so much for PC games and they could do the same for consoles, but manufacturers hafto be willing to compromise.

shinoff2183103d ago

It's not to hard to do and there's youtube videos that break it down really well. ANyway most of us here arent able to break are console anyway due to being up to date on firmware from playing

Chocoburger104d ago

Yep, this sucks having to require a jailbreak for something that should be standard in our industry by now. I learned my lesson when PS4 was jailbroken and I didn't keep a console on low firmware for years, but now I'm holding onto two low firmware PS5s specifically because there are features I'll be able to do that you can't do on official firmware, so this will pay off for me soon enough.

Jin_Sakai104d ago

It should be a sin to let these games sit and be stuck at 30fps.

EazyC104d ago

RDR 2 not getting a 60FPS patch for PS5 was a crime.

Driveclub - Brutal Backlog

Driveclub was a headline game at the start of the PS4’s life. A fabulous game – eventually - but what now, with the servers turned off? Is it worth your time? JDR starts its engines in today’s Brutal Backlog.

Are there even more than 20?

purple1011204d ago

i went to the article and theres only a couple racing games, cant find the button to move page on through all the adverts.

purple1011204d ago

ah its changed to a video now, strange, but il take it

Dfooster1203d ago

Dirt rally doesn't even make the list? Errm OK then.

Driveclub is over rated as well, with middle of the road handling and the 30fps killed it upon arrival for me.
