Firmware 2.17 Now Available For PS3

All has been quiet on the firmware update front as of late, and PS3 owners have been stuck on 2.10 for almost three months now since the last update happened around Christmas time. However, that all changed tonight as Sony have stealthily released firmware 2.17 upon the world.

Well i heard people syaing it takes 10 mins. It takes the 360 about 1 min for a complete firmware update.

It's a firmware update, it obviously changes something, something you can or can't see, it doesn't matter, if it improves the overall stability and performance of the machine, I'm all for it, it's not like it's the last update. You guys have to cool it with the in-game XMB, once it comes out I bet you'll still find something to cry about.

yeah your right we will find something to cry about about but it's us the consumer who make the playstation 3 what is right now. if we didn't complain about certain feature i'm 100% sure sony would of left things the way it is right. When we cry it's for the future of the console, and that's what will bring us great feature like in-game xmb. Once in-game XMB come out, we will find another feature that we want.

This download does NOT kic me offline if u will...i am able to still msg friends and sign onto the store and network....previously the updates would prevent u from doing anything online untill u updated. Now its somewhat optional if u will...Hmmmm

This update could be the rumored update for Tekken: Dark ressurection support for dual shock 3.

Firmware updates are not applied for dualshock 3 support. It's independent on a developer-by-developer basis.

The update would come separately as a required download when you start the game.

The only thing I noticed which is cool is now for photos you can do trimming. Instead of just zooming and trimming you can actually move around and trim what you want on a picture.

This might be the "in-game xmb" ready firmware.

In-game xmb is non existent without a game patch first. I'm thinking each game needs to be updated by a patch to support in-game xmb functions. Every game up to now weren't prepared for in-game xmb. Lets just see if we start to see new patches for games. I have a feeling the feature is already embedded in this firmware. Just need some modifications from the game to see it.

what this does, took 5 mins to download and doesn't seem to have done a thing.

only thing i've noticed is that ps3 doesn't lock for a couple of secs when coming out psn store (as it used to)

short of that doesn't really seem to be anything to it. sony's blog say it'll sort out certain lag issues so am gonna jump on ut3 tonight and see if its sorted that out (have been having online lag/frame issues since i bought it.. cod4 and HL have always worked fine so would probably not notice the diff even if it had done something.

have to incorporate ALL previous updates so anyone buying a PS3 off the shelf will have all enhancements. So I don't see the time to download reducing anytime soon, or until the next generation PS3s roll out. Still, I agree it would be nice to have a description of what the update does. Happy gaming.

Apparently all it does it improve the stability of online gaming. I guess this means you don't get disconnected so often.

Not that that really matters since my ISP seems to throttle or drop my connection whenever they see me using it...

When warhawk came out i heard about these problems but i have been told by ps3 owners on this site that the great thing about the psn is that there is no lag due to pvp connection?!?!!?

Have people on this site been telling porkies. In fact they also said that due to live not using dedicated servers there would be more lag problems. I use live everyday almost and have on the rare occasisons in vf5 and fifa exp a little bit of lag but nothing serious so now i am baffled.

Can someone honest on this site tell me what online gaming is like on the ps3 and whether the lag/disconnecting is frequent and what games it effects? I just want the truth as i will be purchasing one to play prologue online but if theres online problems it might not be worth it.I mean ut3 came out at christmas and theres lagging problems that no one has mentioned.WHATS THE DEAL?

The simply biggest factor into disconnection and lag and what not, is always and will always be your own connection, and every other players' for that matter.

For p2p play it all depends on the hosts connection, maybe u struck lucky on people with pretty good connections, that might lead to the reason of less lag.

As for ps3 I have warhawk, resistance, and cod4

warhawk- no lag at all, just brilliant gameplay
resistance- same no lag
cod4- occasional lag, and dissconnects, usually some guy with a crap connection, or were playing 'Bog' map which lags like hell no matter what =/

unfortunately, I'm not sure about unreal tournament lag situations, but I do beleive it all traces back to peoples connections. (I think that ut3 has been patched for that but not sure, you should check it out)

For any disconnects from PSN, that would usually have to do with a router or what not, like a recent blog post on Xbox Live posted on n4g, talking about his experience with online on the wii, ps3, xbox 360, the guy mentions he keeps getting disconnected etc etc from PSN

It would be his router, I occasionally experience discconnection (only when I'm idling around the XMB) but it's a simple matter of heading to your router and pressing the reset button, I don't have to worry about the location of my ps3 to my router as they are just one room away from each other so yeah,...

I ask this because i have cod4 on my 360 and i have not exp lag on it once not even on the bog map.

I hope that this sorts out the lag issues as im looking forward to online prologue and lag would just ruin it anyone played it online yet?

From what I gather on prologue, there is a long loading time for online, but no lag what so ever, it was from an ign or gamespot preview, i'll check up on that later, as for xbox live, I have no idea tbh as I don't have a 360, but I would say either the people ur playing are close, or just have fast connections ( which is a benefit for p2p) I'm not sure whether or not Infinity ward uses dedicated servers(it might be Infinity Wards problems seeing as all my other online games run with out a hitch)

, as sometimes when I play Cod4 online the host just randomly ends the game =/. Bubbles up for starting a very legitimate and nice discussion kudos to non fanboys!

They are precisely the same in terms of lag, and anybody who says otherwise is full of sh!t! And thats in comparison to the PS3 on a wireless network and the 360 on a wired one

this actually fixed a problem i was having.... the past 2 or 3 updates, whenever it reached the restart phase my ps3 never used to restart, screen just went blank... i use to have to turn it off via switch at back always taking a gamble cause I knew not what it was doing at the time, I didn't experience that with this update

This maybe a coincidence but the 'Downloading Settings' screen that left me waiting for up to an hour on COD4 online has thankfully left my life.

I had to uninstall the patch to play before but I reinstalled it after the update and all is good!

This lends weight to the 'improving online integrity' fluff they were banging on about

I just did the update thing, and when my ps3 restarted.. black screen with the message " cannot start incorrect hard drive detected". I upgraded my hard drive months ago, and as I read the message the colour drained from my face. switched it off and back on at the mains and its working fine again. Has anyone else had this happen to them?

This update messed up cod 4 ! Since the update I have conections problems and so do other people I play with. It's terrible , it takes like 10-15 mins to fianlly get in a game where the host doesnt disconnect or for the connection to not be "interupted" ! And when were finally in a game we can only do ONE, after that the game doesnt go back to the lobby of the server but just says conection interupted ! I hope this gets fixed soon !

Well all I can say is ever since I updated the PS3 to 2.17 COD4 has been lagging like hell because every game I've joined I've had the 1 red bar when I usually have 2-3 bars no matter who I'm playing against.

Some may experience long download of firmeware through your PS3. I usually go to the japan website with a PC and grab the file, put it into a removable device like memory stick then install the firmware from there.

2.17 said they have fixed stability issues, but after updated it I could'nt party with my friends after several match on COD4... I'm not sure if its just the cod4 server problem...
