"Once upon a time, 2D platformers were the most dominant genre on the videogame market, with nearly every publisher trying to ride on the coattails of Super Mario Bros. and Sonic the Hedgehog with their own “me too” knockoffs. It was a genre as prevalent then as first-person shooters are today. But with the increasing popularity of indie games as well as the digital efforts from second- and third-party studios, 2D gaming has steadily been making a return to form, albeit in a more experimental variety than what was seen in the past. How long can developers continue to experiment with the second dimension before unique adventures like Super Meat Boy and Limbo begin to grow tiresome?" (DarkZero)
The PS4 has a killer roster of incredible platformers. Ranging from simple 2D platformers to vibrant 3D platforming games.
No mention of Astrobot on the VR, one of the best platform titles Sony have put out
Guacamelee is an amazing Metroidvania series with a fun story and beautiful graphics. Check out Jason's Nindie Spotlight on this gem that highlights its unique art style and fantastic boss fights..
Chirag Pattni discusses some of the best Metroidvania titles to be released this generation.
Hollow Knight is really good. GreenPath was my favorite area of the game.
Guacamelee 1 was also good. I got to check out G2.
I highly recommend TimeSpinner. It's on everything now but I played and platinum'd it on PS4. Excellent classic style MV with a cool 'time' element and hidden secrets, bosses, multiple ending/outcomes, etc. 9/10 from me.
This little beauty will be in my Vita very soon..!
More great work from DrinkBox. Mutant Blobs was one of my favourite early Vita titles and yet was also cheapest?! :)
