Tom questions why the 3DS's screens look so shabby compared to the Vita's.

I bought a 3DS at launch, and as soon as I tried it, I realized the touch screen wasn't very responsive. Then a year later it broke, I sent it to get fixed and got a brand new one and it worked better than it did when it was new. One of the main lessons I learned this gen. Don't buy hardware at launch.

Moncole4452d ago

We both know you didnt get a 3DS at launch because it wasn't even out for a year yet. And everyone knows Nintendo builds stuff to last

You didn't buy a 3DS at launch. The system hasn't been out for a year. Quit trolling. Also, the touch screen is perfectly responsive for me. Never had any problems. That said the 3DS screen pales in comparison to PS Vita's.

Megaman_nerd4452d ago (Edited 4452d ago )

and I have never had an YLOD on the PS3 but I know it happens. Remember that you're just 1 customer between millions you know so your experience with the system is not even close to a 0.000000000001%.

Comepletly agree with this article. I like the 3DS but after you see the vita's screen it's very strange going back. Promise you I'm not trying to "troll" or what ever you want to call it. It's the truth.

LightofDarkness4452d ago

It's kind of a "derp" moment here. OLED is massively superior to every other display technology except CRT, so everything's going to look better. It is the only flat screen tech capable of producing true black (because it actually turns off pixels like CRT) while at the same time delivering the most vibrant and rich colours available, with zero input lag or pixel response time issues (i.e., no ghosting).

Heck, even going from an iPhone 4/S retina display back to a 3GS is a massive downgrade.

dark-hollow4452d ago

Oled is way superior technology and nobody can deny.
I have galaxy sII and the display destroys most $1000+ HDTVs in term of color reproduction, contrast and black levels.

Why o why4452d ago (Edited 4452d ago )

also a gs2 owner. I cant leave the screen past half way in terms of brightness. Its blacks are the blackest but i feel the colour saturation is a bit heavy when on default colour setting on anything over half brightness. Almost too vivid. Best phone ive had but android still needs a bit of work imho, parts of me prefer the wave. The vita or any future handhelds should have oled as standard.

Knight_Cid4452d ago

The 3ds didnt need 2 screens?????? WHAT????????????

full 100 percent BC with all ds titles is very very important

and guess what

2 screens over shitty back touch pad anyday

tarbis4452d ago

CAPACITIVE touchscreen and CAPACITIVE back touch pad over a shitty small RESISTIVE touchscreen anytime.

ronin4life4452d ago (Edited 4452d ago )

A touch screen that can hold all the important hud and (sub menu screens without pausing or loading) at all times, leaving the top screen 100 percent free for in game visuals.
The two screen approach offers more than just a touch screen.

King_many_layers4452d ago

It's all very well to want a prettg looking big screen, but i actually like that nintendo kept the dual screens. Games like resident evil revelations, as they use for an example, benifit greatly from the second screen. I personally greatly dislike having a hud on screen as it completely sucks me away from the place that is created.
I agree that it could be used more creatively however, but i can't offer suggestions as to how because i'm not a developer.

The screen size difference certainly doesn't bug me in any form either and i can't personally see the issue with this.

The real issue for me is how glossy the screen is, it's really rather reflective and i find that to be its biggest draw back when i'm playing RE:R.

LightofDarkness4452d ago (Edited 4452d ago )

They'll probably come out with a 3DS variant (deluxe or something) that has bigger OLED screens either this Christmas or next in order to stay competitive and keep people buying the things. Nintendo have a fairly persistent and consistent pattern of releasing updated hardware in short time-frames, and the LCD screens in the 3DS are going to start looking very dated when compared to both the Vita and the ever incresing variety of smart-phones sporting AMOLED/Super-AMOLED screens.

Nintendo will certainly take notice and follow through to meet consumer demands.

Plus, there's certainly nothing wrong with dual screens, I don't think that's come under any criticism really. It's a very intuitive interface that has huge benefits for anything from RPGs to Strategy and Puzzle genres.

ronin4life4452d ago (Edited 4452d ago )

It usually takes 2 years for the first revision. Such a model may be announced and released by years end, but I find March/May 2013 more likely, if at all before holiday 2013.
@king layers
And that is what makes the two screen set up so great. The top screen may be smaller, but it is all action.

CaptCalvin4452d ago

Not gonna happen. a single vita-sized screen is already pretty expensive. 3DS's 3d tech will require twice the amount of columns of pixels. It'll be like having to make 2 OLED screens. The price to produce this kinda screen would be exponential. Imagine having to produce two OLED(expensive) screens and on top of that pack all those extra pixels needed for 3D back into a regular aspect ratio on a screen tech that's already packing a pretty night pixel density.
