Samsung: Next wave of HDTV to Offer 8x Better Resolution, 4,000 x 2,000p

Scott Birnbaum, a Samsung vice president for LCD sales, says the next wave of High-Definition TVs will offer a picture resolution of 4,000 x 2,000 pixels, eight times the resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. That's according to an article by The New York Times.

However, the executive added that Samsung hasn't even started building a plant to produce the new model, but Birnbaum says the company is discussing the super-resolution set with customers.

Birnbaum also told The Times that worldwide demand for LCD sets are now outpacing supply, which is keeping profits up.

Samsung is now the world's leading seller of LCD TVs.

(reply)lolololololol

Salvadore5976d ago

An arm, a leg or even a Kidney.

ddldave5976d ago

uh, i just bought a 1080p tv from them, and now they're just going to blow me off like this? damn.

Lumbo5976d ago

Actually he did NOT say that, he said that in the future, resolutions could go up to that level, but that not even a fab is build where such panels could be produced. Actually all he stated is, that his company is speaking with partners on the possibility to make such high def screens.

The misleading title + the sloppy quoting degrades the original articles quality greatly.

ktchong5975d ago

The topic and summary basically came from the credit source, TVPredictions.com:

Here's TVPredictions.com's title for the article: "Samsung: Next HDTV to Offer 8x Better Resolution" - I just basically took that and clarified on it.

Tranz5976d ago

whats the point of a resolution that high? The human eye can only see soo much!

socomnick5976d ago

The human eye can see way way more than that resolution m8. Human eye can see something like 600 -900 mega pixels.

xplosneer5976d ago

Yes, that's true. but where does it become useful per dollar?

blackmagic5976d ago (Edited 5976d ago )

With 20/20 vision, the human eye can discern 1/120th of a degree of arc at 10 feet. Using basic geometry, this means that the human eye is capable of discerning a 0.034" x 0.034" pixel at 10 feet. If the pixels were any smaller, you would not be able to discern any extra usable visual information from them due to the limitations of the human eye.

At 10 feet viewing distance, pixels can be as large as 0.034" x 0.034" before human vision can detect individual pixels. 0.034" multiplied by 1920 gives you a screen width of just over 65" and multiplied by 1080 gives a screen height of just over 37" for a 1920x1080 resolution screen. Using Pythagorean's Theorem on a 16:9 ratio screen gives you a diagonal just over 75".

Sooo... if you are sitting 10 feet away from your television and you have 20/20 vision, your television would have to be larger than 75" before any resolution greater than 1920x1080 would be physically possible for the human eye to perceive.

DeadlyFire5975d ago

Yeah we know human eye can see this and much higher, but do we really want a TV that spans the whole living room and around part of the wall? Why not just make something that fits over our eyes that shows TV or just make something with better picture like with the next set of new TV tech with 1,000,000: 1 contrast and stuff.

we will have a news like this

Samsung: Next wave of Blu-ray to Offer 20x Better Resolution, 10,000 4,000p

jaja14345976d ago

Actually if something like this did happen it would probably be on the next formate to come around. Probably the holodisc or something close to it.

Neither BR nor HD can hold a candle to some of the formates that are currently in the works, but thats how it should be.

WilliamRLBaker5976d ago

HAHAHAAHAHAH what a...***** do you have any idea what your talking about token black man?

If and 1080p movie right now takes up 20 gigs....how much do you think an 2000p movie is gonna take up? lol your a fool. Blu ray would CHOKE on that resolution.

man0fsteel5976d ago (Edited 5976d ago )

what does a being a token black man have to do the topic William? Nothing. are you insinuating that he's slow? ha good one,

ANYWAYS... both formats will be able to handle this "upgrade" remember.. HD DVD is at 51gb (triple layers)right now and blu-ray is at 50 as well (dual) both with room to gain more storage in the future. (they were talking about 200gbs to a terabyte). It may not be mainstream, but its definetely not impossible. Next time please think before you open your fat mouth

<--Man0fsteel aka black guy

xplosneer5976d ago

On a 100GB or 200GB disc that wouldn't matter. The problem is that the HDMI cable would probably explode. LOL

blackmagic5976d ago (Edited 5976d ago )

a 4kx2k image would require 4x the storage capacity, a cable with 4x the bandwidth to transmit the signal and players with 4x more processing power to decode the video. The technology already exists but it will likely come as the successor to Blu-ray/HD DVD due to the exeptional limitations of both standards to process a 4k video stream.

Btw, 4kx2k projectors are already being manufactured for commercial digital theatres and the resolution is considered to be equal in quality to film stock.

William you have no idea what your talking about. Blu Ray maxes at 8 layers with 200gb which has yet to be achieved yet. I don't think there will be any consumer need for any format after blu ray.
