Rebellion: “Gamers Are Ready For World War Two Again”

In an exclusive interview with GamerZines, Rebellion's Steve Hart has proclaimed that gamers are now ready for a resurgence of experiences set during World War Two.

Just because it's a word doesn't mean its use is correct.

When it comes to "spelled" vs. "spelt", it's really a matter of where it's being used. In British-English, "spelt" is perfectly acceptable, even though its use has seen a decline in recent years.

In American-English, however, "spelt" is considered incorrect by just about any publishing editor that has a brain. In American-English, "spelled" has always been proper. That doesn't mean "spelt" is wrong...it just means that it's not appropriate in American-English for professional writing.

Since this isn't professional writing, and it's just a comment on N4G, I don't think we should be too picky. Especially since every comment arguing about grammar contains one error or another.

For example, "Claims the guy who spelt, "comment" incorrectly..." contains improper use of punctuation.

"I always thought it was "spelled" but I guess English class was wrong." also contains punctuation errors.

"spelt is correct." contains a capitalization error.

And even my comment is littered with dozens of errors, just to prove the point. So let's not get too crazy.

You fail to realize 60% of the COD gaming population has never played any WWII game. I refer to all the kids and casual shooter fans. Their first shooter was probably COD4.

Just saying that there IS a new market for WWII games.

Also, I personally have played COD1, COD2, MoH AA, MoH PA back in the (good old) days ... and I do want a new WWII title :D

They probably played World at War. I'd rather see fresh ideas. Or maybe a revival of Vietnam games like Vietcong and Men of Valour Vietnam.

I'd love to see the MAG style of game-play redone in a WWII fashion. Think of Omaha Beach with 64v64 or reclaiming Paris 128v128.

WW2 is the earliest era that is practical for a war game. WW1 tactics were trench warfare, and prior to that you've got musket ball rifles and what not. There's a good reason for the popularity of WW2 in FPS games.

What I like is that they also provide a good excuse to do away with gimmicky cheap stuff like infantry radar (why they put it in all modern-setting FPS games I'll never understand, since no such technology exists in real life). WW2 FPS game tend to be a more pure tactical experience.

Besides, it was the most insanely massive war in world history. So there's also that...

Personally, I wouldn't mind playing another WW2 game. Not necessarily CoD or Battlefield, but I think another WW2-themed game with solid multiplayer could be fun.

MoH: Frontline did some pretty interesting things after the first stage. At least setting wise....the gameplay itself hasn't held up all that great, but that's besides the point.

I'll take any era if they don't force historical correctness and make gameplay the number one concern.

I would love to see DICE to a WW2 expansion for BF3 the same way they did the Vietnam expansion for BFBC2 (i.e., a $20 expansion that is effectively a whole new game).

The thing with WW2 is how much variety it allows for. You've got forest and mountain warfare in Europe, you've got island and jungle warfare in the Pacific, you've got desert warfare in North Africa.

How about fictional wars? Make your own stuff up, like how Metal Gear is. It takes place in the real world but the conflict is entirely fictional while still being based on reality and real world events.

And I don't mean be generic with it either. How about a plot that revolves around bio-terror? Why is it always nukes? Why isn't the president ever captured anymore? Why is everything just "AMERICA FUCK YEAH" all the time? Shouldn't there also be 2 single player modes so that you can get the story from the eyes of each faction involved? Why is everything always so one sided?

Well I have a feeling that the reason it is always Newks and "America" all the time is cause...well video games sell alot in America... and all the casual and bro gamers can relate to newks and well bros like yelling EMERIKAH FEECKS YAAAAH!!! (sorry for stereotyping) and since it seems like they make the majority of the market its easier to go the safe route and cater to them...

and with the two sided campaign.... i can totally see some stupid activist group going head over heels over the other side saying.... playing this campaign supports terrorists.... it lets you murder children tarnish America.... or something stupid like that...

This is why I love Assassin's Creed games. It revolves around historical events and today but has it's own huge twists behind it. One of my favourite game stories

WW2 guns just don't appeal to me. Unless they're thinking of approaching WW2 from a totally new perspective that doesn't require using bad guns, then I'm in. If they're planning on making another cookie-cutter FPS set in WW2, count me out for sure.

Maybe you should read more about the various guns they had including the Colt 1911 which we still use today...

You have to calm down and learn to accept criticism. Even if it's annoying at times. You did say bad guns, and that was implying that WW2 guns were bad. The guy just gave you an example of why they are not bad.

When I make a point about wanting devs to create innovative experiences set in WW2 rather than another generic shooter, and someone's entire reply is based around the fact that I used the word "bad" while making my point, that's the very definition of nit-picking.

Completely ignored my point in order to correct my use of a single word. That's not criticism. Criticism would have been taking into account my opinion, and arguing with that. But as soon as he saw the word "bad" my point vanished in his mind and he replied something totally irrelevant, because it was nitpicking.

And since someone else is jumping on the nitpicking bandwaggon, fine, I'll reply to his initial comment: the reason I said they were "bad" is because they are, in video game terms. We may be still using some of them in the real world, but that's because we haven't invented some of those guns found in Halo or Resistance. I'm not talking about the real world here, I'm talking about video games, so if you tell me we're still using some WW2 guns in the real world I say that's totally irrelevant since anything is possible in the video game world--ie better guns.

Edit: and since I got 5 disagrees to 1 agrees on my first comment, which either means everyone wants more generic shooters, or that we have a community of nitpickers, I'll be extra clear this time: my whole point was about wanting a game that doesn't revolve around guns at all. Meaning if someone replies and his comment is focused on guns, his reply is completely irrelevant to what I just said.

I want a fully detailed Vietnam game, not what Black Ops was but a realy Vietnam game. Being an infantry soldier in the jungles fighting Vietcong day and night. We Were Soldiers in a video game form.

Agreed, I would love to see a Nam game with uncharted 3/Battlefield 3 level of production values and polish. Its such an unpopular war, which is probably why we haven't seen to many games.

Problem is America was essentially the bad guy in Vietnam which is why games and media avoid it as much as possible because it is extraordinarily difficult to portray the shit that went down there as any sort of "justice".

HOWEVER It would be truly interesting to be in shoes of a soldier who begins to realize how screwed up the war is, forming doubts, disobeying orders and possibly even abandoning the front lines and having to escape on his own. (Though chances of having a main character with a personality - or even a voice - in a war fps? 0.5%)

that my friend would be an amazing guy. Even if America was the bad guy let us experience some of what was America's most hated war. I want to know what the soldier were going through in the heat of battle as well as the jungle. It could be amazing. These soldiers went through hell and we should see what they went through atleast in a video game form to have some understanding.

I think one developers start releasing them they will just get bashed. "OMG too many single shot rifles, OMG I can't kill anyone with one knife stab? Thats not real, OMG Where are my Attack Dogs, OMG these machine guns are ancient, OMG why did they go back in the past..its not exciting."

I can't wait for another good wwII game. Ww2 is my favorite in history. Im a history buff. Something about that war is just interesting. It's wry rich and we have yet to see the war entirely yet. What about a game from the German side? Or the European resistance? Or Japan?

Tought PC isn't as handicapped. MW II has not gone away from gamimg, all the mods/players still playing Company of Heroes, World of Tanks, and Red Orchestra 2, Silent Hunters, etc, are good examples.

Why WW2 again? I would much rather have World War 1 games with an emphasis on story, that would be awesome. Especially if at the beginning of the game we could play as the guy who killed Archduke Ferdinand in Austria!
