E3 2011: PlayStation Vita to Support PS2 Emulator – Rumor

When Sony unveiled the PlayStation Vita this year, they didn’t go much into the details as to what features the handheld will have when it launches in early 2012. This year at E3, there are things that we’ve heard from various publishers in regards to a possible support of the PS2 Emulator on the Vita.

why would the PSV have a PS2 emulator before the PS3?

a08andan4734d ago

I think it is because of the CELL-processor in the ps3.

whateva4734d ago

because it's newer & can be designed to do it.

The PS3 used to have a ps2 emuluator, looked a bit poo on some games yet still done the job (love u MGS3), Cant help but feel that the PSV might push the PS3 even further as a great console or be a massive hindrance to it.

Dude, sony want to shove this through ur ass with all the pressure possible, come to me sony, IM OPEN looool.

Editing, if sony really doesnt do this, im all for hackers to make this possible and it can be done.

No chance 3DS, no with ps2 library backing vita up...

that the older PS3s had some chip (not the same one in the PS2) that was used to try to emulate PS2 games. It was costly, didn't work that well and caused the systems to overheat sometimes.

It raised the price of the PS3s, so they axed it. I'll try to find a link for source.

@HeavenlySnipes

FAT BC PS3s had the Emotion Engine and Graphics Synthesizer, both from the PS2, that's why they were backward compatible, then to cut costs, Sony took out the EE and emulated it and finally people b*tched too much about the price and Sony cut both

O-T

That'd be freaking amazing, here *hoping*

PS3 has a PS2 emulator, just not all models do. At the time (2005) when the PS3 spec was finalized, PS2 BC was only possible because the PS3 had the PS2 GPU and CPU chips (GS [Graphics Synthesizer] and EE [Emotion Engine], respectively) on the PS3 motherboard.

Later models kept the GS chip but axed the EE chip, instead using the PS3's Cell CPU to emulate the PS2's EE chip. This worked for most games, but many games had glitches in them or were outright unplayable due to it. It didn't help that the PS2's entire system is basically alien technology compared to any other system, like Windows, so it's a bitch to emulate even by today's standards.

The PS Vita might have some solution to this problem. That's why this is plausible. So far we don't even know the full true specs of the Vita, so no one can comment on whether or not this is truly possible, and this is also why it's a rumor for now.

Legaia: Dual Saga
Grandia II (best Grandia btw)
Final Fantasy Titles
Kingdom Hearts Titles
Shadow Hearts Titles
Suikoden Titles
Champions of Norrath
Tales of Titles
Dragon Quest
Star Ocean
Radiata Stores

man, so many great series the PS2 had that I remember playing. Some of them I never got to finish so I would love the chance to go back and play them on the Vita. Release them through PSN the same way PS1 games are and I guarantee sony and devs would make a killing. I would be buying a ton of them. Would need a shit ton of SD cards though lol

pain777pas4734d ago

Please be true we need transfarring to work right? Plus there are too many games on the PS2 to forget.

Xof4734d ago

It would likely mean we'd be able to play the... 4 PS2 HD ports on a Vita, leaving us unable to touch the vast majority of PS2 titles.

Unless CFW becomes a thing. Again.

easto1a4734d ago

If this happens insta-buy!

ShadyDevil4734d ago

I doubt it. but we shall see.

Just_The_Truth4734d ago

there's still plenty of time

rob60214734d ago

Agreed, PS2 hardware is very difficult to emulate accurately, and It's not going to convince third parties to develop on the platform to have people buying used PS2 games at gamestop instead of new PSV games. My guess there may be PSStore PS2 downloads of games for PSV (Maybe PS3 too) that aren't feasible to remake in HD.

Foxgod4734d ago

Thats would be great, theres a bunch of ps2 games i never got to play, because i never owned them back then for the ps2.

Ps2 games would look pretty good on a small screen.

metsgaming4734d ago

so basically they want to sell their ps2 games for ngp via the store. Not suprising they are doing it with ps1 games.
