"The Lord of the Rings Trilogy will be released on both Blu-ray and HD-DVD on November 23, 2007.

As a gesture of good faith over the Matrix release, New Line/WB will be releasing only the Extended Editions on Blu-ray at this time, while HD-DVD will get only the Theatrical Versions.

The Blu-ray version will be on a BD50 in VC-1 with PCM. It will also showcase a lot of the neat features of BD-J."

Sorry to tell you but New Line has no plans to release any of the LOTR trilogy in any HD format quite yet. As you should know they are still currently in a legal battle with writer/director Peter Jackson about the money he and his company aren't receiving from the success of the film. Until 08 and prolly the end of the legal proceedings no HD format will see any the films released. BTW New Line is format neutral but has shown favor to Blu-ray on more than one occasion.

Also blu-ray isn't only for High-Def movies, but also for Hi-Def games that require more storage space...so therefore, Blu-ray isn't only good for movies but it's good for GAMES aswell. Even if Blu-ray loses the MOVIE format war (which I doubt)...it'll still be usefull for games. Win Win situation for PS3 owners, I would say!

This comparisons are simply dumb... and always ignore some very important facts... such as WHY is blu-ray selling more movies than HD DVD?

Blu-ray movie library is larger than HD DVD... so isn't obvious that blu-ray will sell more movies?

Sells do not always translate to installbase but also to concent available.

If blu-ray have 2 times more movies than HD DVD... isn't obvious that it will sell 2 times more?

Though installbase can have a direct impact on sells it's obvious that this is not the case... if one combines the total number of blu-ray player in the market (including the PS3) and the number of movies available on blu-ray vs HD DVD... HD DVD is doing pretty good.

Sadly... blu-ray has more support than HD DVD from the beginning from the movie industry... so, all the people that own HD DVD and support it are not buying many movies because there is not much to buy... I own an HD DVD player.. and I didnt buy an HD DVD for a while.

Things would be a lot different if the movie industry would simply support both formats and let the people decide.

EMBRACE BOTH FORMATS. The HDM market is less than 5%, so small it's a blip on the radar. Neither format will win. A new format will rise with higher resolutions, larger disk space, and a unified finalized spec before either win the HDM war.

Its clear that Consumers want BR because of the many choices of players, Samsung, Phillips, Pioneer, Panasonic and BR has MORE incredible major studio backing. Enthusiasts BUY both because it is their hobby and they love HDM

But the truth comes out when an electronic store generally show blu-ray as the choice. Im not talking about those big retail stores like best buy.... but Ive been to alot smaller electronic stores and they tend to show blu-ray. Why because by standard it is simply better

1) 50gb is better than 30 gb.... and please dont bring up the argument of the 51 gb cuz it is already official you WILL need new hardware to play with 51 gb's.

2) 1080p .... always 1080 p capable

3) for some odd reason most of the blu-ray discs have this thing called losless sound.... while on hd-dvd front most of them DONT..
Last I heard to get dts hd or dolby true hd ... studios have to fork out some cash/royalties to encode their movies in these formats.. While PCM uncompressed sound costs less.

4) enthusiasts like to choose from brands.... what does hd-dvd have..... oh yah toshiba.... blu-ray has many more ce companies supporting this tech.

Sega added a propietory CD format to their Genesis console as an addition to it's media. You know, to give gamers a "choice" on if they wanted or not. This lost Sega a bunch of money and the CD became a failure and the company in general.

I bought approx 15 blu-ray discs in the past month from amazon.com and imported them into canada.

Plus I even imported "the island" from amazonuk.... fyi it IS REGION FREE. Great visual quality, great story, hawt chick.... the only thing that was missing is the lossless sound.... but then again it is wb/dreamworks movie.

What some fail to realize about 45 days ago you could not even find a second gen HD DVD player in store. For about 30-45 days you could not find a A2 or A20 in store. I expect the numbers to equalize now as the new 3rd gen HD DVD players are now in store and are selling well. We currently sell the A30 for $329.99 with the BI and 300 bundle. We do a BDPS300 for $399.

Toshiba hurt themselves when they short supplied retail stores and then couldn't deliver the 3rd gen players fast enough.

What you fanboys don't realize is that just because the the PS3 is a Blu-Ray player and 90% of you fanboys brought at least 5 Blu-Ray movies since you had no games to play, the numbers are on Blu-Ray side. But don't jump for joy yet. Hollywood studios are not paying attention for a "Game Console" as a number. That's why the HD-DVD camp claim's sales over Blu-Ray for "Stand Alone" player.
