Should PSN Include SOE MMO Access on PS3?

DualShockers writes, "When PSN+ was announced at E3 2010, no one was really shocked by any of the details given, early beta access, possibly some cross-game chat, pretty expected stuff. However, I was not disappointed at the lack of shock value in this announcement. My own personal disappointment lies in a business decision by SONY and Sony Online Entertainment with regards to MMO pricing. The PS3 is the perfect platform for MMOs, but if there are multiple MMOs and they’re charging for all of them, it kind of defeats the purpose of marketing to the same group. I proposed an idea a while back that I sincerely felt SONY could have thought of alone, but it appears that this iceberg is heading towards the PS3 and the MMO demographic is about to smash into it.

First of all, there is a big problem with charging fees for every MMO game on PS3 at once and expecting them all to be successful. Obviously third parties will do whatever they want. Regardless of of...." (DC Universe Online, E3, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, Industry, PS3, Sony, Sony Online Entertainment, Tag Invalid, The Agency)

Seems to me that this would be a huge benefit to having PSN+ , I would be willing to pay double.
yess  +   1528d ago
It could be very cool, but that means a lot of free content...
Someone have to make a living, and earn money.

Pay double is a bit to much though...
WildArmed  +   1528d ago
I agree. (not about paying double, but SOE MMO Access being a great addition to PSN+)
I'd shell out the money next week if this was confirmed.

same with me. the monthly fee is the biggest reason i've never gotten into an MMO.
Biggest  +   1528d ago
The nature of MMOs won't allow it. There has to be some kind of income for them to support the game. Though it would be nice, it won't happen.
FanboyPunisher  +   1528d ago
yeah brah MMO gaming on a console?
What has the world came to?
deafwing  +   1528d ago
HELL YES
This would make all those MMO games, especially Final Fantasy XIV more popular. This would a good move for them but more so for us.
HighDefinition  +   1528d ago
Yes, it would be a great idea.
specialguest  +   1528d ago
Don't expect third-party games like FF14 to be covered by PSN Plus, and that's IF PSN Plus covers MMO. The PS3 will get the same treatment with FF14 just as the 360 & PS2 got with FF11.

yes, there should be, not just SOE mmo games, but all MMO games.

its should be part of the PSN+ service.
Hitman0769  +   1528d ago
Third parties would never agree to this, but I honor you for trying!
enkeixpress  +   1528d ago
... This PSN+ membership thing should really have alot more features..

THis lost Sony some serious points with gamers since they always touted free. Icluding MMO subs would be awesome
JoelT  +   1528d ago
It's unfortunate
but because of the way MMO's are structured and the upkeep required will keep it at a separate price. Although it is unfortunate.
ruiner4482  +   1528d ago
Touted what as free?? PSN is free...

I can't believe I got a bubble taken off for a fucking joke. I posted a video to a rimshot, confirming my comment was a joke, and the mods still insisted I really was trolling....

Yet when two people give me a bubble+, IT NEVER FUCKING SHOWS UP! You mods are idiots. Yeah, I said it. Sue me.

On Topic: Cool. Only reason I'm even replying to the topic is because yet another bubble could be easily taken off for Off Topic-ness.....

i would sub

Id like to see a tri monthly or yearly plan for subscribing to a MMO. Even maybe let us pay one price to play both The Agency and DCU Online. They could make it a little higher than a single game subscription but including more than one game would be great.
ALFAxD_CENTAURO  +   1528d ago
Would be a good addition.
Hitman0769  +   1528d ago
The thing about this that strikes me as funny is that SONY had a "free2play" server solution proposed using PS3 clusters but it never really catches on with MMO developers.

I refuse to believe that The Agency or DC Universe Online will maintain the amount of free updates that a game like WoW, Final Fantasy XIV, or even Everquest would.

So why should I pay the same amount? Live-action game-play is a huge plus but live-action players don't usually stick to one game for long periods of time and this needs to be addressed when you specifically target the market.
thehitman  +   1528d ago
most likely
The F2P model had probely huge amount of DLC etc like normal MMOs with their Item Mall to keep revenue but they probably just scrapped it for the pay2play model.
thehitman  +   1528d ago
If not free
At least a discount off the service or PS+ should give you options on what you want to do like pick if you want free games etc or free monthly discription/discount on a MMO you have etc. I think that be a perfect idea would give better incentive to have people play MMOs on the ps3 rather than PC.
Sharingan_no_Kakashi  +   1528d ago
Yes
I was so hoping that DCUO would be free to play. They should definately add this to ps+
jukins  +   1528d ago
that would be awesome and would seal up a psn+ purchase for me. like the article mentioned there is gonna be a lot of competition in the mmo space and ppl usually dont pay for more than one.
nikrel  +   1528d ago
I'm sad.
Wish DCUO was F2P, I was under the impression it would be. I doubt it will have the depth of other mmo's that charge 14.99 monthly... I might do it but currently I'm not going to pick this title up.

They should have made new areas/expansions for a price other than a sub fee, this would give people the choice to buy more without feeling a grip of a monthly fee.
SixTwoTwo  +   1528d ago
Hmm
Pay $50 a year for free access to MMO's that normally cost $15 per month... Yeah I don't see that happening. The best case scenario is we get a minor discount.

dragonyght  +   1528d ago
it could work if they approach it in the right angle PSN+ member get F2P version of any mmo on the platform but left micron transaction of premium items are left to player to buy that way everybody wins
Godmars290  +   1528d ago
I could see them offering a discount. $10 a month instead of $15.
FalconR289  +   1528d ago
Yes, if so I can look foward to DC Universe online, and would be a great selling point for PSN plus.
Figboy  +   1528d ago
me and my wife were just talking about this.
while paying for an MMO subscription isn't terrible, it is when you factor in two people.

it's bad enough i have to buy a second PS3 (damn economy has kept me from picking one up for my wife right now). that's $300.

THEN i have to buy two copies of the game (in this case, DC Universe Online is the MMO me and my wife want to play together). that's $120.

THEN, i have to pay $30 a month for subscriptions for me and my wife. that's $360 a year, JUST so we can play an MMO together.

that's the cost of 6 extra video games i could be playing instead. to play ONE MMO with my wife, i have to sacrifice 6 other games.

that would have meant, no Heavy Rain this year. no White Knight Chronicles. no Mass Effect 2. no God of War 3. no 3D Dot Game Heroes. no Red Dead Redemption. well FUCK THAT.

i'm not going to sacrifice Killzone 3, Twisted Metal, The Last Guardian, inFAMOUS 2, Uncharted 3, or Final Fantasy VS XIII next year, just so me and my wife can play DC Universe Online.

the game doesn't hit for another 4 months, and i think there's always a chance that SOE will take into consideration the feedback they've been getting, and come up with a more reasonable pricing structure, or eliminate it all together.

it's going to take more than Superman to go up against World of Warcraft. i know they're different genres, but the MMO market is supremely competitive. Guild Wars has as many subscribers (of which i'm one of them), because it is FREE to play. Free Realms (of which i've also played a little of), is another free one.

The Agency will be free to play, so why not DCUO? i know SOE has to make money, but there are LOTS of other ways they can do it besides highway robbery every month.

i'm on shaky ground when it comes to my finances, and i can't spend as much on games as i used to. i already bought way too many in the first 6 months of the year, and there's still more to come.

DCU Online is on a "holding pattern" in terms of my purchasing intent. other games have now been shifted to the forefront. that's a real shame for SOE.
Darkfiber  +   1528d ago
There's your first mistake, playing an MMO on a console. They'll never take off, don't even bother. They'll shut down the PS3 servers after three months.
Games4M - Rob  +   1528d ago
@Darkfiber
3 months ? Dont be such a tit
Godmars290  +   1527d ago
How come that argument doesn't apply nearly exactly to a PC?

I mean sure any number of people can proabbly use the same copy of WOW or any other MMO on one PC, use it on others, but you still have to pay for multiple accounts, use multiple PCs if multiple people in the same household want to play together at the same time.

Figboy  +   1527d ago
Godmars, i'm not sure what you're getting at?
i'd still have to pay $30 a month in order to play with my wife. not to mention that we only have one PC capable of running an MMO (the laptop is too old).

even if we could install the same disc on both PCs, that doesn't eliminate the $360 a year i'd be paying for the two of us to play.

i won't even touch the MMO on consoles failing from Darkfiber. there hasn't been a real MMO on a console to actually prove or disprove that. we'll just have to wait and see.

Hmmm
This seems very similar to this article:
