It may not be the easiest to develop on but it seems there's a lot more freedom afforded to devs. Im still wondering why there was no mods or mouse n keyboard allowed on Unreal tournament. I can almost understand the omission of M+K support on the 360 as it could detract from MS's PC platform but mods??? Wtf. its one of Unreal tournaments defining features. MS seem to want more control than sony when it comes to this like whats being discussed in the article. I still think nintendo are the most anal though.

im sure there are those that wouldnt mind playing L4D2

third party exclusives are becoming extinct, any gaming company that hasnt built up a huge pool of first party companies is in trouble

Valve ... what you get from PS3 gamers is nothing but full support and loyal fanbase. Just be true to us.

SOAD5063d ago (Edited 5063d ago )

It's not a cult, deadpoole. It's a game machine.

Edit: And I will love to play Left4Dead on PS3.

Sony needs to do some kind of APP store on the PS3 just like apple did with the iphone

that would be sweet

tdrules ... dude calm down ... as Les Grossman (Tom Cruise) said "I want you to take a step back and literally FUCK YOUR OWN FACE!".

Seriously If Gabe Eatwell has finally realized true potential of PS3 and has the joined with "It only Does Everything" force ... wtf is wrong with ya ... dont be a stubborn ba$tard child and embrace whats gonna be nothing short of but pure WIN for PS3 gamers.

I own both consoles and I love playing Portal 1, Left 4 Dead 1 and 2 (especially multiplayer) on Xbox 360. I guess you only got PS3, thats why ur crying ... If he is willing to bring all or few of these games in future to PS3 then I think you should take your thumb out of your sore a$$ and try to think outside of box for once.

Elwenil5063d ago

Deadpoole, you owe me a keyboard, lol. Les rules.

On topic, I honestly could care less about Valve and their games. I do not like Steam and I do not play Valve games on my PC. Mostly because Counterstrike was about the only thing that interested me personally but regardless of my own preferences it's good to see a well known and pretty successful developer like Valve make a game, possibly games, for the PS3. Ps3 is coming into it's own these days and I think this is a perfect example of developers realizing that what was true about the gaming industry 2 years ago is no longer true. Sure PS3 fans, myself included, hated Valve for their comments about the PS3 but anyone willing to stand up and eat crow like that at a Sony press conference deserves a little slack. At any rate, I'm glad to see more multi-platform developers taking the PS3 seriously and recognizing it's strengths rather than just bitching about it's weaknesses. I think even Valve had to take note that the PS3 is gaining momentum and with it's larger disc capacity, is now a solid console to bet on for increased sales.

Shadow Flare5063d ago

i respect gabe newell for doing a full 180 on what he said in the past and putting in some effort to try out the ps3. That mans got guts to go up on stage and talk. That man has huge guts

pilotpistolpete5063d ago

What is the problem?

Gabe said some bad things about the ps3 a while ago, angering fans. Two years later, he goes onstage at E3 and eats crow (I'm surprise no eating crow jokes about Gabe's diet yet!) in front of everyone.

He owned up, admitted his mistake, and ps3 fans can finally enjoy games they wanted for years.

theonlylolking5063d ago

VAVLE was never exlcusive to begin with. They made games only on 2 platforms so its not exclusive.

StanLee5063d ago

It's the more open platform because Microsoft would never allow something like Steam on XBL. XBL is the pipeline for all content.

Kleptic5063d ago

When looking at Valve's actions through this console generation...and the controversy that comes from it...its pretty clear that people simply don't understand what PC game development even is, or was, before the consoles went online...

Developers like Valve, iD, Crytek, etc. were all primarily PC developers...that wasn't because of loyalty to MS, it was actually the opposite...it was Apple that wanted control over every piece of software developed for their machines, and used proprietary hardware...where as MS simply made a OS gateway that was universal across all kinds of different hardware layouts, and actually left their noses out of what was being created to work with their software...

obviously there were some tie ins...you have to pay a small licensing fee, as 'use' some MS tools to get the software to work with home windows machines, but other than that MS didn't care what you did...which is why PC gaming was popular...and Apple gaming...was not, and never will be...

So a PC developer makes a game exactly how they want...and they have complete and full control over it...and its their obligation to support it...want it online?...they run the servers, release the patches when ever they want, and do what they want with the title...

whats different is that XBL completely goes against that stance on online gaming...now a developer makes the game, and basically hands everything over to MS to handle control of the online portion...you want to release an update or patch glitches?...you have to pay MS to 'test' the code and then mount it on XBL for downloading...that is EXACTLY why there were 120 updates for the PC version of TF2, and only 5 for the 360 version...

PC developers hate that...they didn't have to do it in the past...but they do with the consoles...and more so with the xbl than the PSN...thats exactly what Epic said, and exactly why the 360 version of UTIII had no mod support...and the PS3 version did...Sony doesn't force developers to allow them to support the title...its more of a PC environment for online gaming, even though Sony still forces testing and licensing of game updates...but the UGC nature of the PSN is much better than XBL...

and that...is exactly why Newell is finally coming around with Sony...you can't survive without the consoles now...they are too popular...Valve's not embracing any one company, they are just migrating to where they can do things how they used to be able to as much as possible...the PSN/PS3 is a better platform for that...thats all this article is about...

morganfell5063d ago

This is the same reason I have over 100 free maps for UT3 downloaded directly to my PS3. Open development architecture versus that which MS offers.

Noami5063d ago (Edited 5063d ago )

hmm i used nouse and keyboard on ut3 on ps3 or you mean xbox360?

Kleptic5063d ago

he meant on 360...that wasn't MS or XBL having the gestapo all over Epic...that was why there was no UGC on the 360 version of UT3...the idea of going to a website through a browser on the console (uh, can't do that on the 360 anyway) and downloading whatever mod you wanted, installing it on your console, and playing it...drove MS nuts...and they didn't allow it...if its not on XBL...you can't have it on a 360...period...

the mouse and keyboard thing was simply that the 360 doesn't support 3rd party peripherals like that...the PS3 does...Epic said it took less than a day to implement the M/K support into the PS3 version of UT3...i actually loved that, but its one of the only games to do it sadly...

That Sounds More Like it Gabe, last time when you said you wanted a PS3 as open as an APPLE, we all went like WTF! :P

Steam on PS3 is just WoW...

Ju5063d ago (Edited 5063d ago )

So, he really said they'll have Steam on PS3, huh ?

Are they pulling a Konami using the Steam ID over PSN, then ? I don't care, TBH, my Steam account is the same as my PSN account (no stupid "Valve ID" + "GameID" like Konami pulled).

Maybe they work together and allow PSN ID synching with Steam ID (like EA does with EA accounts). Good enough for me.

Does that also mean PS3 - PC cross play ? Technically it should if they use the SteamID on PS3.

Kleptic5063d ago

yeah all that confused me...they didn't explain it enough yet...what exactly steam wise is coming to PS3?...obviously not all the PC titles available...so will it just be another gaming community network you can access through your PS3?...instead of the PSN?...or will they combine them both into something else?...

steam as a console exclusive on PS3 sounds great to the media...but what the hell does it even mean?...

Syronicus5063d ago

But I have to give him props. He stood in front of the Sony confrence and admitted his mistakes and then went on to compliment the ps3 and give us the oportunity to enjoy one of their greatest games. Now all I have to ask is, where the he'll is episode 3!!!

AKS5063d ago

I think some PC developers are really screwing themselves by not releasing some of the real time strategy games on the PS3 with keyboard and mouse support. I'm sure there are people with outdated PCs who also have a PS3. An RTS would work great on the PS3 with mouse and keyboard or Move plus keyboard.

Regarding Valve, I think Steam support sounds great. Also, Left 4 Dead would make an awesome PSN title, especially with Move support.

DA_SHREDDER5063d ago (Edited 5063d ago )

Im one of those people who not only had my last upgraded pc take a crap on me, but now im stuck using a single core processor laptop that cant even play WoW. Its only 5 months old too. Its so funny cause laptops are so cheap now, and if you want to build your own desktop you still have to spend a decent amount of cash to get things moving. I will never consider on buying and building another gaming rig ever again after all the influx of games that Ive been playing on my ps3 for the past couple of years. Steam on the ps3 is a win for everyone. Hopefully I can cross platform play so I can chill with my friends.

dabri55063d ago

Steam on PS3 is a win for everyone, however you logic for Lapttop and desktops is seriously flawed. first of all, what Laptop did you buy that is single core and only 5 months old? Is it an Atom processor? Did you buy a netbook and are seriously complaining that you can't play games on it? They aren't built to play games.... The atom processor is using in cell phones as well... They are not made for REAL computers. You will never ever find a laptop that outperforms a desktop for the same price. Ever. On top of that, the ability to upgrade the desktop for years after is reason enough to go for a built rig over a laptop. Not sure what went wrong with your built rig but something tells me, it wasn't entirely the parts fault. Were you overclocking?

dabri55063d ago (Edited 5063d ago )

Did anyone else really not see this coming? As soon as the Steam for Mac announcement came, I saw this coming. Microsoft 360 and Windows titles run using Direct X. Macs and PS3 run using OpenGl. Reason stuff was released on 360 in the first place was because it was a pretty simple port. Now that a ton of steam games are being ported to OpenGl for Mac, the porting process to PS3 is also pretty simple, thus we are now going to see Steam/Valve games coming to PS3. It is just the logical move.

PlayStation 3 is not only crazy awesome, it’s also got what we in the future call “openness.” which turns out to be pretty important to those handful of millions of people who enjoy free themes or mods,or well, anything that doesn’t involve paying for a gold membership. I mean, come on, who wants to spend they're money for content that should be free? What is this? XBOX LIVE? cha.cha.cha.ching.

might not be as good as this i came up with....

PlayStation move is not only crazy precise, it’s also got what we in the future call “GAMES,” which turns out to be pretty important to those handful of millions of people who enjoy playing a shooter or platformers or, well, anything that doesn’t involve miming a pre-made video. I mean, come on, who wants to pretend they're playing a game? What is this? kinectimals? eew. eew. eew. eew.

Do you think the steam service is something to do with PSN+?

duplissi5063d ago

no. not yet anyway, sony already has a site up that explains ps+ in full anyway so theres no guess work needed.

http://us.playstation.com/p...

tdrules5063d ago

Sony would never let a superior service on PS3, it would make PSN null and void.
feel free to find a feature PSN has that Steam/Steamworks doesn't

Akagi5063d ago

Why are you so butthurt?

dabri55063d ago

He speaks the truth. However I do think that part of the deal to get Valve games on the PS3 was to also bring Steam over. This way Valve still gets it's cut they are used to getting and can act as their own distributor.

GAM3R7l5063d ago

When they announced UT3 for PS3/PC, there was all the talk about how the PS3 was more "open" than the 360, and that's why they had no timetable on UT3 for 360...blah, blah, blah...."

Sony fanboys ran wild with the news, proclaiming anything from the death of the 360, to Gears coming to the PS3...or even Gears 2 being PS3 exclusive. I remember it all too well.

The funny thing is....once UT3 came out, PS3 owners ignored it....and EPIC jumped back on the MS/360 bandwagon, because that's where their "bread is buttered". The EXACT SAME THING will happen with Valve...mark my words. This is simply an ill-fated affair, born out of the "beer goggles" phenomenon....and when Gabe wakes up, sobers up, and realizes what he's done....he'll come RUNNING back to MS.

zeksta5063d ago (Edited 5063d ago )

You know it's funny, you claim PS3 owners don't give UT3 attention...

Have you failed to look at websites that have a massive amount of UT3 modifications for the PS3 or are you just as bias as Gabe was till he came to Sony?

Atm, all i see here is a kid who's obviously not happy about the decision Gabe has made... well though luck, he had a choice and he choose to create on a console which your obviously not a fan of.

So i suggest you go back to your 360 and play some of that new Kinect crap while watching poorly acted ESPN news! :)

And maybe when you eventually decide to grow a brain, you can have a look at a console that defines gaming, not increases the amount of features so you pay more $$...

Honestly though, after what Gabe did say about the PS3, i'm not entirely a "BIG FAN" of his, hell it's hard to be a fan after that rubbish he said...

Garnett5063d ago

1. You told him to go back to his Xbox 360 to play more Kinect crap, well go back and play some more wii-mote-knock-off crap.

2.Its funny that you talk about paying for features, because Sony IS DOING THE SAME THING!!! Except you pay more with Sony and you get less, like cross game chat LOL!

3.PS3 was a mess at launch, you know 4-5 years ago. PS3 is awesome now.

Whoooop5063d ago (Edited 5063d ago )

nevermind

SOAD5063d ago

Gabe doesn't care about what MS has to offer if they don't offer an open community. Valve cares about forging a strong relationship with their userbase, as corny as that sounds. Their games receive a lot of mod support because they let their userbase work with the Source Engine for free.

If PS3 is more open than the 360, then Valve will prefer working with the PS3 even if they have better sales on the 360.

Sony Fiend5063d ago (Edited 5063d ago )

Yeah thats was before the gap between PS3 and 360 was 2-3 million. PS3 is on track to surpass 360 in worldwide sales next year.

Remember, remember the 2nd of November.

T9X695063d ago

I highly doubt that, to many kids these days that want an Xbox and COD because their friends have it. With Xbox getting COD content first such as map packs it gives the little 13-16 year old's a reason to get a Xbox. Plus the Xbox is cheaper with the arcade version and since you can use USB sticks for memory now you can get a Xbox 360 with everything you need for less than $200 where a PS3 is $299 at the least.

I actually prefer it this way because when I play my PS3 online I enjoy not having to listen to little kids scream in my ear like I hear on Xbox all the time.

solidt125063d ago (Edited 5063d ago )

idunno, Call of Duty is great but I see other games stealing part of that audience with every FPS that comes out and with even more good looking FPS games coming the COD crowd is gonna get smaller and smaller. I'll be playing Killzone 3, Medal of Honor, Bad Company II, Bullet Storm, and GRAW Future Soldier. Oh yeah I can't wait for Twisted Metal. It will be a good break from FPS games.

dabri55063d ago

Im about 100% percent positive the move to PS3 is more of a choice because the amount of work to bring the software to it was minimal. The games are already being converted to OpenGl for steam on Mac. It isn't a hard thing to port it from Mac to PS3 (not like they will take full use of PS3 hardware anyways). Why limit your market when the amount of work to bring it to a new market is minimal? There won't be any running back to anyone, I'm sure. Valve stuck with what they were saying. Too much work to port their titles to PS3 with possible too little payoff. However porting to both Mac and PS3. Well that makes more sense and lessons the risk. Here is hoping things actually sell well.

McValdemar5063d ago

BTW, Gabe didn't even turn away from MS.
Portal 2 was already coming to 360 will only lack mods from Steam.

But is very dumb to say that mods are so important.
Is like saying that I'm not interested in the game but mainly in what could be done with the game engine.

Is just smoke in the eyes of Sony fanboys.
They know that a sony fanboy swallows every bullshit. And they feed em just to sell afew copies.

Microsoft’s Surface and Xbox hardware revenues take a big hit in Q3

Microsoft just posted the third quarter of its 2024 fiscal financial results. The software maker made $61.9 billion in revenue and a net income of $21.9 billion during Q3. Revenue is up 17 percent, and net income has increased by 20 percent.

Xbox content + services up 62% while hardware down 31%... seems about right with the way they tout you don't need the hardware to play. People can play on their phones or smart tv or other means. I don't hardly play on my consoles directly since getting devices like the logitech g-cloud and ps portal. Which is to also say I have been playing more digital than physical because of these devices.

I can tell people like you are an absolute minority..

If service is up means their fans and fanboys accepted this model and subscribed to it. The near future you will see a big decline because the service is saturated.

shinoff21832h ago

But that's been ms for years. When things aren't going their way they try to change the way things are said. For instance console sales are down, they stop telling how many sold instead telling us how many hours spent in halo or headshots. So it makes sense console sales down just say people are playing on more devices then previous. What they won't say is how many xbox players jumped ship to ps5.

Cacabunga1h ago

Hardware sales are so bad that Sony and Nintendo are blowing the sales off the water with their hardware.

If Xbox are losers, others aren’t..
Xbox already tried everything with Xbox live then subscriptions went down so much that they had to find something else. Their fans subscribed then reached saturation rather quickly.

Hardware and exclusive games is where it’s at! Keep gamers excited, announce decent software and people will support you

"Without Activision Blizzard, Microsoft’s overall gaming revenue would have actually declined this quarter."
"Xbox content and services would have only been up a single percent without Activision Blizzard..."
"It looks like next quarter is going to be a similar story for gaming at Microsoft, too."

That is crazy... so A/B/K is carrying the whole Xbox gaming.
Oh and Microsoft will be fine. Windows, Office and Cloud are growing with each pc purchase.

Why Monopolies In Gaming Must Not Be Allowed

As of right now, there are no monopolies in the games industry, and for the sake of the medium as a whole, they never should either.

thorstein15h ago

Shouldn't be allowed in any field.

Inverno11h ago

And yet the biggest tech companies in America are essentially that. They buy up all the small comps only to kill them off and steal what they have, and if they can't buy em they bleed them to death.

jwillj2k410h ago

Eventually they’ll realize the value is with the employee not the company. Buying an IP means nothing if the people who contributed are let go. They’ll get it one day.

MrCrimson10h ago

tech is different because they buy threats and then kill them. Twitter bought Vine and did nothing with it. Despite people seemingly liking it. Could've had tiktok a decade before bytedance. go figure.

Zenzuu11h ago

Monopolies shouldn't be allowed regardless. Not just for gaming.

MrCrimson10h ago

They buy IPs not talent. That's why these buyouts never work and the IPs die. Right now it's too expensive to develop games - but I expect that to shift maybe as AI tools can make it easier. The best games have been indie games for awhile as big developers fuck their ips to death with "games as a service" -

Mugen Souls Retro Review – Sexy Demon Space Adventure

Gary Green said: We have a juxtaposition of 2D and 3D visuals, flashy turn-based combat, quirky anime characters with cheeky dialogue with plenty of partial nudity; Yes, this is a Compile Heart JRPG. Whilst the engine is borrowed from Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2, Mugen Souls is more of a Disgaea spin-off. It’s not a strategy RPG as such, it merely sits within Disgaea’s ever-expanding universe (Multiverse? Netherverse? Your guess is as good as mine). You won’t find cameos though, since Mugen Souls is a franchise which aims to stand on its own two feet.
