This Day in History: Sony's Ken Kutaragi Levels Up

On this day in 1997, Ken Kutaragi -- the "father of the PlayStation" -- was promoted to chairman and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America.

Kutaragi had been with Sony some twenty years at that point, starting in the mid-70s as an engineer who quickly worked his way up the ranks with his ability to innovate technology and rock the boat that his contemporaries stood on.

The only mistake Sony made is letting this guy go.

Wrathman5142d ago (Edited 5142d ago )

ken came to sony when the playstation was the only brand in gaming.it was number 1.13 years later and the ps3 is the 3rd place console WW.and holds a measley 24% market share.

IM NOT SURPRISED HE IS GONE

on the other hand..his xbox counterpart launched a console into a market that was monopolised by playstation.and against all odds did what sega and others failed to do.and broke that monopoly.now almost 10 years later the 360 is the gamers choice of console despite being an inferior product in terms of graphics.the 360 has 30% of the market.and is so successful sonys ps3 copies and pastes every piece of software the xbox has with monthly annoying updates.

NEXT IS Kazuo Hirai

sorry Kazuo Hirai..but in the words of donald trump or alan sugar...YOUR FIRED!

Nothing. It's up to the gamers to stop consuming content from companies that they don't agree with.

Garethvk3d ago

How do you know if you agree with it or not unless you play it? Which without conventions forces gamers to rely on trailers. Perhaps Demos should be made more frequently. But companies need to do better as well.

anast3d ago

Wait until release. Watch Gameplay. Exercise patience.

Garethvk3d ago

But is that not what they have now? Tons of gameplay or are you talking about watching actual gamers play it versus the trailers and streams? The big issue is that some companies pay streamers and influencers and they create content but for me; that is hardly a fair, unbiased, and factual look at a game.

Get rid of the suits in the industry and job done!!

Garethvk3d ago

They usually are attached to the money sadly. It would be nice to have gamers in charge but you have so much money invested that business people are needed. Hence the issue; you need people who know business but are also gamers who know have an eye to the community. It sounds simple in theory that if you give gamers quality games that they want to play; money will be made. But that is not always so.
