The Last Of Us Online Devs Celebrate Their Experience With The Canceled Game

The team is sad for losing out on such a great project but celebrates its growth because of spending time on it.

Chocoburger129d ago

All they had to do was make a basic online mode like their previous games. Instead they wanted more money and choose to go live service which makes games worse in my opinion.

What a waste of time and money, what a shame.

seanpitt2384d ago

I can't wait for season 2 so they can kill Joel off in the first 2 episodes!! Then it will be just Abby and Ellies revenge plot!

Something is telling me that this won't happen though because it wouldn't make sense, oh wait

Linzoid128d ago

Not sure why they didn’t just make Factions 2. There was no need to make it a live service.

TLoU Factions was a great addition such a shame they couldn’t be bothered to remaster that for PS5 considering the crazy high price tag of the remaster of a remaster…

anast128d ago

This is something to be celebrated. This studio is smart and they get it, even factions 2 wouldn't've have been worth the time. I am surprised they didn't just remaster the first one though, but actually how popular was Factions?

The Last Of Us Series Has Remarkable Potential For Spin-Offs

Najam from eXputer writes "It's time fore a new installment in the series, not another pointless remaster."

anast84d ago

They are working on something new. Not to be rude but it is impossibility stupid to think ND next major announcement is going to be a remaster or their next Last of Us entry is going to be another remaster.

AlterRecs81d ago

I think this is in response to them releasing a remaster for the sequel, a game that didn't need a remaster.

Basically a "why did you put out a remaster no one asked for when you have all there options available"

anast81d ago

They remaster is to put out something quick while they are deving new stuff. I don't get how people can be so static.

AlterRecs80d ago

There's no news about a third game being in production, you're just assuming that they're working on something that they aren't

anast80d ago

When they release the news to start the hype-train, you can give me my props then.

DrDoomer84d ago

I want an alternate timeline spin-off, where part 2 never happened.

CrimsonWing6984d ago

They’ve already done Remasters of 1 and 2… what else is there to Remaster?

AlterRecs81d ago

Considering they remastered the first game twice, who knows lol

CrimsonWing6981d ago

That was a Remake. I guess they could do that to 2, but man…. They should wait a couple generations so it can look like a major upgrade.

Cancelled The Last of Us Online Menu Image Surfaces

There's a The Last of Us Online menu image that seems to have surfaced confirming a Battle Pass, seasons and more.

Amplitude132d ago (Edited 132d ago )

A battle pass, seasons, virtual currency. I've never actually been happy a game got cancelled til now.
I want to play a sequel to Factions too but not like this. This can burn in hell with the rest of the cash-grab games as a service games.

Remember when online gaming was actually just fun and you could hop into a match of Warhawk or Halo or CoD or Last of Us Factions or Uncharted online and not need to deal with all this?

porkChop132d ago

I can't believe it hasn't been remastered yet. It was so good.

phoenixwing132d ago

Warhawk is my fav online game

Sharky231132d ago

I always thought if they were gonna attempt a GAAS then War Hawk was perfect. I know it could ruin the experience but if done right we’d have War Hawk again. I really miss that game.

Cacabunga131d ago

I’m glad they canceled this thing.. now go back to SP games

KillaJamm131d ago

I second this some of my favourite online gaming moments was in that game, every match was epic.

frostypants131d ago (Edited 131d ago )

Warhawk was my one of my favorite Battlefield games, even if it wasn't technically Battlefield. The sound effwcts were so good and every form of combat was satisfying.

jimbo676131d ago

The things people do to convince themselves that this was great for Sony is bonkers. All they needed to do was cut out all the gaas elements and return back to basic the last of us online modes. They don't want to do that because overall the game was terrible and naughty dog doesn't know how to make good online games. Would probably have been forgotten in about a year just like the rest of their online mode games. The spin around here ishilarious.

derek131d ago

Oh man Warhawk was awesome.

Amplitude131d ago (Edited 131d ago )

Just a heads up gang you can still play Warhawk online super easily on both a modded and unmodded console as well as RPCS3. It's really simple to set up. Just do a quick Google. You can still always find a match too. I play a couple times a week

Yeah, I totally disagree with Sony’s massive push for the high number of GaaS games spearheaded under Jim Ryan. I could see a focus on a small number (like 3) but they are (were) pushing for 12 and that is taking so many development resources away from single-player, story-driven games. Yes, games cost money to develop and the aim for these GaaS games is a steady source of revenue, but there has to be a happy balance somewhere.

Funny how some of the usual suspects here were rejoicing at the news of this cancellation as if it was a blow to PS fans. I thanked the heavens when I heard of this cancellation.

isarai132d ago (Edited 132d ago )

Same, and they are selectively blind cause there were a good portion of fans, myself included, who have been saying for a LOOOOONG time they would've rather seen this get dropped if it meant getting their other projects on a faster track. Would I have like to play this? Sure, but not at the cost of delaying and stressing the development of their other projects, and especially not after being redirected to a full on GAAS title. It's a bit bittersweet but it had to be done to get back to what they do best.

Also hate this side narrative that ND somehow are terrible at MP because this got cancelled, they made 4 MP portions to their games, 2 of which were legendary (U2 and Factions) the other 2 still pretty solid. The issue was this was them being pushed to make it a Live Service title, which is a very different beast than just a fun MP, and literally none of Sonys 1st party has experience doing that.

derek131d ago (Edited 131d ago )

Sony can't just ignore the most profitable sector in gaming forever they need to grow in areas they currently don't occupy. Sounds like what SIE and ND need to do is develop a new sector of their business that can deal with tlou online as a separate entity from the rest of ND, starting small and growing as business grows. An expansion that would allow current ND to continue making their single player games, while a completely separate branch handles their online game. Trying to do both with ND current infrastructure was not wise.

SyntheticForm132d ago

Agreed completely.

From where I'm sitting this cancellation is an absolute blessing.

NotoriousWhiz132d ago

Socom was my favorite. None of that GAAS nonsense.

Lightning77132d ago

No matter how you look at it, it's still another canceled project can say this is really a good thing. Who Knows how long it'll be for their new sp game.

ReignMan_27131d ago

Add Killzone 2 to that list for me. Good times

-Foxtrot131d ago (Edited 131d ago )

I remember where the ONLY thing I disliked about the first Factions was how, despite being this post apocalyptical setting where every resource was scarce, you would open up a menu during the game to buy weapon upgrades and armour with "parts".

Now can you imagine what that in game menu would have been like in this game? With currency, more MTs and everything else it could have been awful, who knows what you'd be allowed to do. Hell some of things in Uncharted 4 were silly where you could just make NPCs magically appear to fight for you

"Buy 500 parts for $5.99"

"Body Armour 450 parts or $2.99"

frostypants131d ago (Edited 131d ago )

Yeah but they put off Factions mode for this. They need to put it in Part 2 and return it to Part 1. I'm glad this monstrosity is dead but give us what we originally had.

JEECE130d ago

"Remember when online gaming was actually just fun and you could hop into a match of Warhawk or Halo or CoD or Last of Us Factions or Uncharted online and not need to deal with all this?"

Yes. But now if a game doesn't have all that nonsense, people move on almost immediately. If devs launch a multiplayer game and then don't immediately start adding random crap via updates, people say they abandoned the game and "sent it out to die." Or even if a game gets updates for awhile and then the devs announce they will only be updating it for stability, people declare the game dead. Like when Rockstar announced they weren't going to be adding new content to Red Dead Online anymore, the community declared the game dead, even though the servers were not being shut off. And people still accuse Dice of abandoning Battlefield V, even though they released map packs for a year and a half, which was longer than they supported a lot of the older Battlefield games.

anast132d ago

Good. Now they can continue to dev great games.

Zeref132d ago (Edited 132d ago )

Continue? By the time their next game comes out it will be 8 years since they made any new games.

Naughty Dog is officially off the board this gen. One of Sony's elite studios.

anast131d ago

Should they make one every year? two years? What is your recommendation for how long it should be? And why? I really don't get it. It's not like we are talking about Bethesda here. ND brings quality.

-Foxtrot131d ago

@anast

PS3 we got 3 Uncharted games and TLOU

PS4 we got 1 Uncharted game, a TLOU Remaster and TLOU2

PS5 we've gotten a TLOU Remake and TLOU2 Remaster

You can't say there's not at least a small decline in their output, the issue is they've wasted time f******* around.

bloop131d ago

Druckmann needs to be demoted. What have ND done since he was president? Released one new game? And possibly the most polarising game in history at that too. The guy alienated and lost millions of fans of TLOU and they promote him to president and the studio have put out barely anything since. Mind boggling.

derek131d ago

It's been 3 years plus since ND released tlou2, it hasnt been that long. Especially the level of detail and complexity ND games come with that are a few steps above what any other SIE studio is doing.

uc4 and tlou2 had terrible single players stories they haven't made a good single player game since tlou. Infact since uncharted only uc2 and tlou1 had good stories. That's 2 good games outta 6 games released.

anast131d ago

Why were they terrible stories? What exactly made them terrible?

Crows90131d ago

They weren't terrible but I completely agree that their last great title was the last of us and that's a really long time ago now.

-Foxtrot131d ago (Edited 131d ago )

Uncharted 4 wasn't terrible

I just didn't like them doing a "long lost brother?" storyline for the LAST and FINAL Uncharted game where most development was spent on Sam making him relevant while Sully and Elena got a little bit sidelined. At least with Amy Hennigs idea of Sam being the villain Sully and Elena would have been with Nate from the start, hell there's that talked about Ballroom scene where Elena actually helps you pickpocket someone at the dance, Nate dances with her to get close to the target and they grab the item from him. It was a lot better of Elena breaking down and getting angry Nate is treasure hunting again which was why they broke up in U2 and split in U3.

It's like getting to like the last Harry Potter film and suddenly a man out of no where appears to tell Harry he's his long lost brother, Garry Potter while the rest of the film sides Ron and Hermione.

Marlowe actually sits Nate down in Uncharted 3 to go through his family history, mentions his mother died, father gave HIM up to the state and Drake isn't his real surname. Never once did this powerful woman of all information mention a brother or that their father gave both children up to the state. Besides you think for someone who liked to get inside peoples head she would taunt him about a missing brother.

Also Nadine...was really badly written, awfully done.

milohighclub128d ago (Edited 128d ago )

Uncharted 4 story was too serious, It lost a lot of the fun the early games had. The last of us 2 way to long and drawn out, pretty boring for the most part. The mechanics on both games are unbelievably good, and they translate so well to multilayer. I wish more people would recognise how good the multiplayers are. IMO way better than their single player, they just make a few mistakes here and there but not critical to the overall experience. This game would have been insane. Solo BR in that detailed city we saw? Stealthing around the big ship with infected inside whilst trying to survive the final 3... with tlou2 mechanics, hiding under cars and all that. I think it would of had thr potential to be one of the best things that came from Naughty Dog.

Would be nice if this was all bs and it launched on the remaster in jan.

I'd play it for 10 years straight.

Demetrius132d ago (Edited 132d ago )

Atleast they thought smart about it and didn't want to rub fans the wrong way with bs, unlike the new suicide squad game that will be online only with the battle passes and sh@@

Storm23132d ago

I guess I am in the minority but I would have loved this...

milohighclub131d ago (Edited 131d ago )

I'm with you. Exploring a massive apocalyptic city with friends, whilst taking out infected and other factions of online players. Constant content up dates. Tlou2 mechanics. It pains me knowing somewhere out there this game exists and I'll never get to play it.

Even worse that the devs are coming out saying playing it was the most fun they've ever had playing a multiplayer game.

Everyone rates naughtydogs single player games but fail to realise they are just as good at multiplayer as they are singleplayer. The skills translate flawlessly to mp development. Who would have thunk? Game dev is game dev.

It's even more of a kick in the teeth that naughtydogs ability to craft single player games is seriously lacking since the first last of us. Uc4 and tlou2 stories were garbage. Played both games through once, in comparison I've done tlou1 about 10 times.
Uncharted 4 mp on the other hand, still play to this day, about 2000 hrs deep. Single handedly the best mp game I've ever played.

Storm23131d ago

I am hoping a version of this MP project is put into Last of Us 3
