Game Vortex writes: "Mushroom Men: Rise of the Fungi is the DS version of a game that released simultaneously for Wii under a different title. The DS version is quite different than many games in this genre for the system. Visually dark and featuring eclectic level designs that draw from the perspective of a tiny mushroom exploring our world, it hearkens back somewhat to games based on franchises like Toy Story, Bee Movie, or Antz where the protagonist explored a world filled with familiar but super-sized objects. The theme of mushrooms and their unique qualities plays into the look of the game to some extent, and there's also just a cool, weird design aesthetic at work here. It's a good thing. The game's music is tuneful and fun, but pales in comparison to the awesome soundtrack created for the Wii version."
Resolution writes: "I don't get on with mushrooms. Never have. While I find their flavour unpleasant and their texture revolting, it's the fact that eating them involves putting a fungus in my mouth that really puts me off.
Regardless of this, I tried to approach Red Fly Studio's side-scrolling platformer with an open mind, determined not to let the fungal nature of the game's subject matter affect my overall judgement. I didn't need to worry however, as mycophobia is nothing compared to my hatred of seriously flawed game design."
Guardian writes: "Generally well received on Wii, Mushroom Men DS is a different and less satisfying experience. In essence, it's a platformer based around battling insects and rival "Shrooms" while collecting organic materials to construct a variety of ingenious weapons and tools."
To get gamers in the mood for some fungi fun, SouthPeak Games has also released a specially-created Mushroom Men cookery book, featuring a host of taste-bud tickling recipes… and one terrible dessert.
