The Witcher 3 PS5 review - another Cyberpunk 2077 style disaster - Metro

GameCentral attempts to play the PS5 update of The Witcher 3 and finds CD Projekt has learned nothing from the launch of Cyberpunk 2077.

masterfox501d ago (Edited 501d ago )

lol one site says is a 10/10, definitive, blah blah, the others mention is a mess?, this is the main reason I no longer believe since years in any of these supposed to be "professional game journalist reviews", I only care of my own criteria thats my definitive review :D

FinalBoss501d ago

The author might have PTSD from cyberpunk 2077...I have been playing for almost a week, I might be blind, but did not see any bug.

SullysCigar501d ago

Honestly, I don't put much stock in gaming views from metro.co.uk.

Babadook7501d ago

It’s pretty strange hearing this and yet the game is currently at 97 on metacritic.

PapaBop501d ago

Metro shows up in my google feed sometimes and every article seems pro Xbox and anti PS. I'm not even going to give it a click but guessing it's a major disaster simply because it has PS5 in the title.

babadivad501d ago

Most "game journalist" aren't gamers anymore. That's why most of them seem so out of touch.

A not insignificant portion of them hate they have to cover games at all. A lot of sites (Kotaku comes to mind) will go out of their way to talk about anything but games.

I remember them getting bought out a year or two ago and their boss told them to only write about games not politics or anything else. You're a gaming journalism site, talk about games.

The "games journalist" lost their minds because they had to focus on their actual jobs.

FinalBoss501d ago

Sad but true...well, for us at FinalBoss, we are gamer and not journalist :)

"Geralt’s head and shoulders glitch out in the inventory screen, his hair flutters in the breeze indoors, and distant pieces of scenery don’t so much pop in as strobe across the screen. There were plenty of times parts of quests failed to trigger as intended, even on main story missions. No doubt there’ll be a flurry of patches, for day one and beyond, but that is very far from the point.

There are even hard crashes; times when you get stuck irrevocably in the inventory, needing to close and reopen the game; and even bugs from the original that were previously patched out but have now mysteriously returned."

frostypants500d ago

The hair thing exists in all versions of the game. Being as this is just a graphical upgrade I'm not sure anyone expected that to be fixed.

Wait for yong and ACG to release their videos

LucasRuinedChildhood501d ago (Edited 501d ago )

"I only care of my own criteria thats my definitive review." That's fine for a free upgrade, but I'm glad I didn't waste money on games like Anthem, GTA: Definitive Edition, Fallout 76, etc (I've since tried them).

Without reviews, we'd accidentally buy a lot of bad games which have good, flashy marketing. I remember reading gaming magazines at a young age (partly to get demo discs), and it helped me avoid buying a lot of terrible games and try things I otherwise wouldn't have been interested in.

In this case, pretty much everyone says it's a good upgrade (e.g. Digital Foundry, IGN, hardcore Witcher fans given early codes, etc) so it's not a 50/50 split or anything. He's an outlier. At worst this specific reviewer is lying, but even that is unlikely, so I don't see what the issue is.

He could have, for example, imported an old save and might be experiencing rare issues. These things happen.

Take the fact that they're journalists out of it for a second - it's like getting frustrated that someone in a forum reported having a bad experience with a game when everyone else didn't. It's still good to know and the developers can take note of the issue.

anast501d ago

I don't think it's the reviews that help. It's the gameplay they show along with the reviews.

Game reviews from magazines back then were different.

EvertonFC501d ago

Best thing to do is watch a walkthrough to see how it runs and plays for 15 minutes or so, I've not used a review since the end if the magazine era.

jznrpg501d ago

Too many reviews have an agenda so I choose what I want to play and don’t really listen to reviews besides the technical issue aspect which also can be way overstated or understated .

EvertonFC501d ago

Exactly, I haven't read a review since the end of the magazine era, these internet wannabe journalists are absolutely pathetic.

sagapo501d ago

I like Skill Up on youtube for reviews. Nice indept, unbiased as far as I can tell, but most importantly for me; he doesn't give it a grade (x/10 or x/100). He recommends or doesn't recommend... you get the idea.

anast501d ago

After his high review on Warframe I stopped watching. That can't be trusted.

Sirk7x501d ago

Most sites just want clicks, and they'll go against the grain just to get them. If there's a massive consensus against a game, yeah, I'd be apprehensive, but other than that, do research and form your own opinions. For questions on performance though, Digital Foundry will definitely be doing a very thorough video on this update.

KyRo501d ago

There's someone who writes into the Metro every week slamming everything Sony. Every. Single. Week. Can imagine it's someone who spends their days in Destin Legarie YouTube comment section lol. The article before this one was a article slating H:FW

Bobertt501d ago

To be fair this reviewer says it's a disaster because of the bugs but says it is a great game when working so wait for them to fix it. I would prefer this over reviewers who ignore bugs and crashes and give games 9/10 because they expect devs to fix it later and don't hold them accountable to for selling a product that wasn't ready for launch.

senorfartcushion501d ago

Yeah.

Reviewers for both games and films are nothing but football commentators.

There’s no such thing as a good or bad movie. People just see them. Games can at least have bugs, so there is a slight bit of objectivity to those reviews - but the problem is that reviewers are easy to please. Massive reviewing sites like IGN have such a love-love relationship with publishers that, if the need arises, a studio can demand a second opinion of a review because it doesn’t “sound like the others.”

VenomUK501d ago

@SenorFartCushion said: "There’s no such thing as a good or bad movie"

Watch Black Adam then tell me if you'd like to revise your statement!

Jin_Sakai501d ago (Edited 501d ago )

“lol one site says is a 10/10, definitive, blah blah, the others mention is a mess?“

Not just one site. The game is currently sitting at a 97 Metacritic on PS5 with 10 perfect scores. This review is full of crap.

wwinterj500d ago

I mean it's Witcher 3 will improvements. If you like Witcher 3 then you'll like this but your own personal views probably won't have changed. If you've never played Witcher 3 then you're in for a treat regardless of a "next gen" patch. Metro is a free newspaper we get over here so I wound't put any stock in what they say. This is clearly clickbait.

1) Write spicy article.

2) Drive angry people to your website, who post on other websites to draw more angry people to your website.

It's a lefty rag. Wouldn't expect less.

Binarycode501d ago

I'm shocked ppl are still playing this game.

Shouldn't have worried about visual upgrades, just bring on the next witcher.

ChubbyBlade501d ago

They are working on the next Witcher….

ChubbyBlade501d ago

I am failing to understand why people are disagreeing. CDPR already said they’re working on the next Witcher game.

https://www.gamesradar.com/...

You dummies.

Binarycode500d ago (Edited 500d ago )

I could have worded it better, lol.

I love the game and played it maxed out when it first came out on PC, completed it.

My point was it's getting on and I want a new game.

It's been out since 2015.

cbuc1125501d ago

Agreed. Game was great but move on.

ChubbyBlade500d ago

You heard it here folks. Only play new things. Consume. Don’t enjoy what you enjoy. Just move on to the next thing.

ChubbyBlade501d ago

How can a free update be a cyberpunk level disaster?

Is this writer high?

The 7 Best Western RPGs: Immersive Adventures

RPGs are often huge, sprawling endeavours. With limited playtime, we have to choose wisely, so here's the best western RPGs available today.

SimpleSlave22d ago

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

DustMan22d ago

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave21d ago (Edited 21d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.

Infinite but not the first two games? Witcher 3 but not the first two games?? GTA V but not literally any of the games before it??? Portal 2 but not the first? Also if you're going to play Shadow of The Colossus play the remaster and not the remake. Can't say I disagree with the list but my man it's all over the place.

Name Last Name45d ago

I mean some sequels are objectively better and you don’t need to play the whole series.

Inverno45d ago

But most of these games have a story to follow, sure you can catch up with a YouTube vid but where's the fun in that?

LucasRuinedChildhood45d ago (Edited 45d ago )

A list like this isn't telling you not to play the previous games if you want to. It's just giving you legendary games to play.

But tbh, you don't always have to force yourself to play every entry in a franchise to get to the better ones.

- The vast majority of Witcher 3 players never played the first 2 and had a great time. The first 2 games aren't in the same league.
- The GTA games are self-contained with the odd fun reference. You can easily jump into any of them.
- The Shadow Of The Colossus remake looks and controls better than the original (plus it has a 60fps option while the remaster is just 30fps). New players will enjoy it more.
- Portal 2 is a lot better than Portal 1 and takes the concept much further gameplay-wise. Storywise, Portal 1 is fairly light too. Not that you shouldn't play it but realistically ... you'd love Portal 2 whether you play it or not (at lot of Portal 2 players have never played 1).

Bioshock 1 is the only one I agree with you on simply because it's one the best games of all time and arguably better than Infinite. No other setting like Rapture.

Looking at the list, I'd recommend playing Uncharted 1 before 2 but no doubt, 2 is the legendary one you have to play.

Inverno45d ago

I get it, but that's just my opinion on his opinion. I just think that before you play a sequel you should still play what came before it. Maybe it's just me but i find it fascinating playing through the first game in a series and seeing how it has evolved through its sequels. Like I said I don't disagree with the list, other than SoTC which I strongly believe the remaster of the original should be played above the remake.

AuraAbjure45d ago

Awesome list! Hot take on Fear (and it's hard af expansion Persaus Mandate!) Bioshock Infinite is stellar, so is the Witcher 3 and you nailed it by having Ocarina of Time. So many fantastic games! Gotta play 'em all! Next one on my list is Prey after I beat Dead Space 2 and Splinter Cell Conviction.
