Xbox Series S Storage Is Way Too Small For An All-Digital Console

Now that the Xbox Series S has been officially announced with specs, one thing is very clear. The storage is way too small for an all-digital console.

You’re gonna have to buy external storage, regardless It’s not like the 1tb storage is exactly future-proof either.

DJStotty1749d ago

Most hardcore owners of the PS4/Pro, xbox one/X, will already have external storage, then if you run out of room, just move some games around from Internal to External and vice versa.

elazz1749d ago (Edited 1749d ago )

Even at 100MB/s for the external hard drive moving upwards of 100GB frequently will be very tedious. That's around 17min. If you can move your games as a background task, not sure if they will let you, that will probably be an even slower process.

512GB will probably be around 450GB accessible to the user so the propietary SSD seems almost a must. Might be expensive though.

The Wood1749d ago

Cant you use non proprietary externals?

spicelicka1749d ago (Edited 1749d ago )

Don't know why people are disagreeing. This is the way to do it. With the OS there would still be room for 3-4 Series X games on the SSD at least. It's not that hard to shuffle one a month, just be proactive and leave it to transfer overnight.

BlackTar1871749d ago

Most hardcore will already have one? Where the hell did you pull that nonsense from?

Phoenix761749d ago

Elazz - even with 450gb after formatting you've still got to consider how much space the OS is going to take up and how much of a minimum of free space you'll need for patch updates to install. Going to probably on have about 300 to 350gb avaliable after.

DJStotty1748d ago

@Blacktar187

your casual gamer would not have the need for an external, as they usually only buy/play a few games at a time.

The "hardcore gamer" are your collectors, people that buy/install and play multiple games and play daily, and will most probably already have the need for external storage.

If you did not get external storage for Xbox One or PS4, then you will not need it for PS5/Series X, it is that simple.

crazyCoconuts1749d ago

Remember though that external storage won't run games that are actually designed for XSX/XSS. They need to be run off of SSD.

1748d ago
DJStotty1748d ago

I will just use my 2TB external as storage, and then transfer the games when and if needed.

On Xbox you can set games to transfer and then play another, will not be that difficult.

averagejoe261749d ago

Plus you're going to have to buy their proprietary ssd storage cards for the best results which are rumored to cost over $200 for the 1tb option. This "cheap" console is going to get expensive very quickly.

SullysCigar1749d ago

I'm all for a cheaper console to get more people into next gen, but this seems like a stealth cost. By the time you've upgraded with MS proprietary storage expansion, you're at the same money as a series x. Even if you go cheaper alternative, you're only about $50 short of series x. Factor in the other 'drawbacks' (for want of better term) of S compared to X and you're really just better off saving the hassle and buyers regret and going straight for the X, surely?

If you don't expand storage on the S, you better have bloody amazing broadband speeds and be prepared for some file management sapping your gaming time!

MoonConquistador1749d ago

Yeah it smells a whole lot like the old 360 is cheaper than the PS3 argument.

Until you factored in the cost of WiFi adaptors, external hard drives and battery chargers for your controllers etc.

alb18991748d ago

And the more expensive ps5 will get more expensive exactly in the same way but faster because is a 4k machine with 700g SSD.

r2oB1748d ago

@alb1899

Not exactly. The PS5 will not require any proprietary drives, so the fact that different manufacturers will be making pcie 4.0 drives will ensure you will be able to expand your storage for less than the cost of a proprietary ssd.

DJStotty1748d ago

@averagejoe26

And the same goes for PS5, you need an SSD external that matches the internal speed.

"Which SSD drives are compatible with PS5? Sony have confirmed that they will allow you to upgrade your PlayStation 5's included 825GB capacity (See Also: PS5 SSD: How Much Storage Space Does It Have?) by purchasing compatible NVMe SSD drives. However, due to the nature of PS5 you'll need to use an SSD drive specifically whitelisted as compatible by Sony."

So do not try and make out like it is just Microsoft that require an SSD for maximum results.

DJStotty1748d ago

@SullysCigar

1 - it does not take that long to transfer a game now using HDD's, so SSD will be faster. (around 30mins-1hr currently)

2 - you can play another game whilst transferring the other game.

3 - you will be able to fit around 5-10 games on the Series S hard drive, so if you are going to play 10+ games per day, then yeah you will need some management.

DJStotty1748d ago (Edited 1748d ago )

@R20B

You are mistaken, you need an SSD whitelisted by Sony in order to play PS5 games from an external.

As of this moment, Sony have not disclosed or announced any external SSD drive which is compatible with PS5

Rhythmattic1748d ago (Edited 1748d ago )

alb1899
Its a 825GB SSD in the PS5.
The classic, non-factual post because you could.
I just hate , when a fanboy , no matter their allegiance, just posts absolute FUD... Especially when in this day and age its information at your fingers tips....Literarily... It just shows., like a certain world leader, followers are lazy, and dont care what is a fact, but a reason to throw critical thinking away without understanding, all they have is Critical Belief.

At least say its less space than a Series X... That'd be fact .... But, You went full.

I award you no points.

Neonridr1748d ago

and no doubt any PS5 external solution that allows you to play off of will be super expensive. Considering nothing exists like it in the market.

crazyCoconuts1748d ago

Some of these comments are a little confusing to me - for PS5, Sony said they will create a list of SSDs that are certified / specced out to work well as replacements. However, I don't think they said they would limit (whitelist) the SSDs you could buy and try, they might not work well though. I think some news outlets jumped to that conclusion, but that's not what Cerney said in my recollection at least.
And there isn't an external SSD option for PS5 - it has to be a internal SSD, and I assume it's a REPLACEMENT, not an extension. This is an advantage for Xbox imo.

Rhythmattic1748d ago (Edited 1748d ago )

alb1899. You Disagree?
let me be clear...Without adding an opinion .
The PS5 SSD is 825GB. You are wrong.
Thats a fact you cannot argue,

spicelicka1749d ago (Edited 1749d ago )

For $299 I don't know what else people expect. The best way to deal with this would be to hook up an external hard drive just for storage and current gen games, keep 2-3 Series X games in the SSD and once your library grows you can shuffle between them as needed. Most people already have an external hard drive with their current console and non-Series X games can be played directly off of it.

Secondly, with XCloud streaming COULD become popular and storage space wouldn't been an issue with that.

End of the day don't be a moron and understand your options before investing in any console. Don't complain after.

CorndogBurglar1749d ago

I mean, I still have a 500GB PS4. I just delete games to make room for newer ones. It doesn't delete your save files. I'm not sure I get what the big deal is. Sure I would like more space, but its not the end of the world. If I want to play an older game again I just remove something else and reinstall it.

No one will NEED to buy external storage. Its a convenience.

DJStotty1748d ago

The big deal is it is a slow news week again for Sony, Microsoft have announced a solid option for casuals at a great price point, and people just want to try and downplay.

But on topic, yeah the external hard drive scenario, is exactly the same as it was this gen.

hiawa231749d ago

I am using 10TB of Samsung 860 SSDs for my X1X, so I can't imagine the file sizes for next gen.

Rhythmattic1748d ago

Dont know why you got down voted... Its not like your saying "You HAVE" a 10TB SSD,,,
SMH... comprehension people.

NeoGamer2321749d ago

Ya, to me this is a huge problem this generation on every console configuration. I have bought digitally since 360 / PS3 days. So my total library of games exceeds 24 TB... Currently have two 8 TB and one 10 TB drive hooked to my XBO X and one 8 TB drive hooked to my PS4 Pro. How do I fit down to 1 TB? LMAO!

Neonridr1748d ago

all the consoles will need expanded storage, You think that the PS5 all digital with it's 825GB or whatever is going to be enough?

+ Show (5) more repliesLast reply 1748d ago
ElementX1749d ago

I have over 25 games on my 1TB One X with almost a quarter of it free. Not every game will need to be 150GB. Files won't need to be duplicated like current consoles. Many games could have optional streaming of cutscenes in order to save space.

crazyCoconuts1749d ago

There are some good options available to scale down on size, question is will developers take the time do do so. COD MW as popular/well funded as they are have just got to trying to scale things down size wise. If XSS turns out to represent a huge % of customers and they all demand small install sizes, devs will make an effort to comply. If it's a small niche I bet developers won't spend a great deal of time fretting over how to compress down an XSS specific deployment

1749d ago
AcidDvl1748d ago

I get you but you also need to understand that not everybody plays that many indie games. Most ppl play triple A and those have big sizes.

ElementX1748d ago

How many AAA games do people leave installed after completion?

Vits1749d ago

I don't really agree. My PC have about 700 GB of active storage (Nvme), is a digital only device and for me it work fine enough as both a gaming and working device. Sure you have to be mindful of what you keep in your console and there are probably sittuations when that can bite you in the ass - if you have some really shit internet or many sibblings that share it with you - but it is the price to having it for such a low cost.

Now if M$ could review the prices of their "SSD Cards" that would be great.

shadowT1749d ago

I am less concerned about the SSD size, because you can extend it. I am more concerned that the Xbox Series S is only providing limited performance compared to the Xbox Series X.

DJStotty1749d ago

Only the resolution is limited, it plays the same games.

JEECE1749d ago

I'm not sure resolution is the only way the graphics will be limited compared to Series X; probably other effects too. But yeah in terms of gameplay features, etc there will be no difference.

averagejoe261749d ago

Resolution, fps, load times, etc will all be effected. It's incredibly obvious to anyone who has any knowledge of hardware specs.

yomfweeee1749d ago

Man Microsoft has you all fooled with that resolution claim. A weaker GPU and a lower amount of RAM will affect other things.

1749d ago
--Onilink--1749d ago (Edited 1749d ago )

You are getting a lot of disagrees, but anyone who has seen someone benchmarking PC components knows that on lower resolutions, the games are much much more CPU bound (which is why that part was mostly untouched).

Still not entirely sure about the ram and whether it will eventually be too slow, but you would imagine that they thoroughly tested it before deciding the speed.

But overall, considering how many upscaling, reconstruction, variable shading, etc rendering techniques on a console only pushing for 1080p-1440p resolution shouldnt struggle with the current specs

If you have to buy a $150 SSD expansion, you've got $450 in this not-quite-next-gen console. Might as well have bought the big boy.

Teflon021749d ago

Literally think Series X is a much better buy. This one just seems like a waste of money with the fact the games for 2 years atleast will be on one as well lol. Might as well put that money into the better one. After how some games run horrible on the base Xbox one a d some bad on the S bit great on the X. It's just the safe move

crazyCoconuts1749d ago

@Teflon, exactly. If you can't spend over $300 and you don't already have an Xbox but now want to get one, ok, this console could make sense for you.
But if you're really tight on money you're not getting Game Pass. Hell you're not even getting XBL at $5/month let alone $15/month. So why not get a mid-gen console with more storage and a disk drive so you can rent and resell games? That's the logical answer for frugal consumers in my book.

enkiduxiv1748d ago

It's a dirty game they are playing for sure. They discontinued a more powerful piece of hardware to sell this at a lower price point, but they are still calling it next gen. I currently play on a PC with similar stats to this system, including the SSD. Its faster, but I wouldn't call it a generational upgrade over my base PS4.

Basically, Microsoft's big plan to stay relevant is to win the price war by not actually selling a next gen console. For 300, you can have the equivalent of a PS4 Pro with a better hard drive instead of an actual next gen powerhouse. And you know what, it will probably work too. At the end of the day the masses will eat this garbage up because its so cheap.

Even if Sony gets their price point down to 350, all Microsoft has to do is package a free Game Pass subscription. All the casuals will be able to play all the EA trash they want for next to nothing.

alb18991748d ago

The X is a much better buy for the one who can afford it. It is a 1080p console, it will take four times the amount of space for a game on the ps5 digital and it is just 200g bigger.
