Game Progress Will Carry Over With Smart Delivery On Xbox Series X

Greenberg responded to someone earlier this week on Twitter asking whether progress will "move to the new console through Smart Delivery

Looper1465d ago

Xbox really embracing PC systems.

Preempting those we do not speak of, I am not saying Xbox is the first to this.

crazyCoconuts1465d ago

But Play..... Oh... You got me 😏

Obscure_Observer1465d ago (Edited 1465d ago )

@Looper

"Xbox really embracing PC systems."

What? Did you actually read the news? Not sure what this specific topic has to do with PC. It´s about Smart Delivery between Xbox consoles.

Anyway, awesome news!

Looper1465d ago

Buying a game on steam means you can play it on any pc whether from 10 years ago or a pc with all new parts built tomorrow. Smart Delivery is Xbox version of that pc system.

Edito1465d ago

Looper I think you should stay with the movies channel on Youtube because no offense but you don't know what smart delivery is taking your comments in consideration.

Christopher1464d ago

@Edito: Actually, I'm fairly certain Looper knows what it is more than you. Microsoft is doing exactly what is already on PC, making software compatible with all versions of the hardware as well as the save files. The only difference is that this is built into PC in general and on Xbox it will only work with publishers that opt-in for Smart Delivery.

Obscure_Observer1464d ago (Edited 1464d ago )

@Christopher

"The only difference is that this is built into PC in general and on Xbox it will only work with publishers that opt-in for Smart Delivery."

That´s why you and @Looper are talking about apples and oranges here. PC gaming don´t have to endure transitions between generations like consoles gaming. So it´s easy to implement such feature across the board. In console gaming it´s a BIG DEAL since most publishers will refuse so they can double dip on next gen consoles.

Christopher1463d ago (Edited 1463d ago )

***PC gaming don´t have to endure transitions between generations like consoles gaming.***

Sure they do. We just don't notice them because the PC hardware is designed to be legacy capable and it is all based around the same architecture. And that last bit? That's the only reason Microsoft and Sony are able to do what they're doing with supporting cross-platform games. Nintendo can't do it. Sony can't do it for PS3, PS2, or PS1. But, moving forward, they're both being made more like PC games.

People take for granted the hardware support of PC games without realizing what it means and what work goes into it.

Obscure_Observer1463d ago (Edited 1463d ago )

"And that last bit? That's the only reason Microsoft and Sony are able to do what they're doing with supporting cross-platform games."

Only reason? In case you don´t know, Xbox 360 is Power PC same as PS3. Completely different from x86. That´s why Shu Yoshida was impressed by MS´s achievement regarding BC on Xbox One (x86).

"I didn't think it was possible. There must be lots of engineering effort.

https://www.theverge.com/20...

MS efforts on legacy software on consoles has nothing to do with PC at all.

Sounds like when I played DC Online on PS3. That same save and character I created was still there on PS4. The game even looked better and was a free upgrade. This list that is very old from 2013, is basically showing cross buy, cross save, etc.
https://www.playstationtrop...

I mean, it's great that they are doing it. But I don't see the difference. You Could buy a game on PS3 and in some instances, play it on PS Vita. Or play it on PS4. Smart Delivery is just Microsoft's name for it.

Just sounds like they want to promote and keep their customers with a feature not unlike Backwards Compatibility. Creating that "peace of mind" that your ecosystem, stays with you.

crazyCoconuts1465d ago

On a separate but related topic, I was thinking about what Cerny was saying about how assets are typically duplicated in installs to minimize HD seek time and how a fast SSD changes that... So it seems that installs optimized for next gen consoles would be packaged differently as opposed to just being like an HD texture pack on PC. So, despite the architectures being similar, the deployment packages might look completely different between prior gen and current gen...

Fishy Fingers1465d ago

Yeah i dont think you'll see any "upgrade" patch/download with Smart delivery like you might have this gen if you're installing from a disc. It'll probably require you to download the complete "nextgen" version.

Basically you carry over nothing but the Key (and saves) to unlock.

RamRod881465d ago

Why does every article turn into a dick measuring contest? Who cares who did what first. I just care about what's going on now.

SyntheticForm1465d ago

He always does this.

You could talk about the bible or the dinosaurs and he'd find a way to squeeze Sony to the front of the pack chronologically.

SPEAKxTHExTRUTH1465d ago

Because Sony fanboys are very insecure apparently...

1Victor1465d ago

@RamRod88
It’s because one group of players fan the flames of “________is innovating with this feature or attachment to the system” while the others than know and prove them wrong try to cool them down by saying no _________did it first it’s just a different name or a more advanced version.
If the first group don’t fan the flames the second don’t have to prove the wrong it’s just a simple enjoy what you get and don’t go saying _______is the best for doing this or that attachment for the first time.

RamRod881465d ago

Victor, the article doesn't even mention Sony or who did what first. It only talks about the feature and what it entails. Apocalypse was the one who brought up Sony and made it into console war bs.

Spurg1465d ago

I don't see a lot of PlayStation exclusives in that list that are ps3 to ps4.
Where is:
The last of us to ps4. Oh, wait they remastered it in HD
Uncharted to ps4. Oh, wait they remastered it in HD.
Beyond: Two souls to ps4. Oh wait, they remastered it in HD
God of War Ascension to ps4....never came out on the ps4

The big difference in that list is. An overwhelmingly huge majority of the games are ps3/psvita/ps4 and are mostly indies cross-buy between psvita.
Xbox is more serious about it as its not just about the transfer between this gen to the next but already a feature that's been running with "Play Anywhere". I can play Gears 5's save on my PC already and is a feature for every XGS games.

Sony will have to have its own version of smart delivery, if not they will be shooting themselves in the foot. One of the major issues is who will fight for the tag that will appear on the game box. Is it going to say enhanced for Series X and PS5 or just one of the platform.

1Victor1465d ago

@spurg
Really you are so insecure and ignorant that you forgot that PS3 and PS4 had different chips and was too difficult even do a backwards compatible PS4 or a cross play.
Also where are the iOS and Android game it’s called play anywhere right I want them on my phones

darthv721465d ago

@victor, I seem to recall EA did a thing with one of the battlefield games on PS3 that when you put the disc in the PS4 it let you dl a compatible version to play on the ps4.

I guess it was more than EA as I found this piece on the subject: https://www.ign.com/wikis/p...

rainslacker1465d ago (Edited 1465d ago )

@Spurg

And how many of those 360 games were 360->X1?

Oh wait, MS stopped making many games at the end of last gen, so they didn't have the ability to fleece their customers like that. They just did it with other remasters.

Funny....I was having this remaster conversation with Gangsta Red before he got banned, and we came to the conclusion that MS had just as many, if not more, remasters from the 360 gen, which they charged for on the X1.

""Sony will have to have its own version of smart delivery"

You mean cross buy? the thing they introduced with the PS3 and supported the PSV and PSP at the time, then extended it to the PS4 when it released? Yeah, Sony better get cracking on making a system to support cross buy real quick.

That said, Sony itself didn't really have that many cross buy games from last gen to this one. They had a few on the indie side which they published. They did have a few cross buy with Vita and PS4 though.

What they do for next gen I couldn't say at this time. They'll either make plans known, or not talk about it. Time will tell.

CaptainCook1465d ago (Edited 1465d ago )

"Sounds like when I played DC Online on PS3. That same save and character I created was still there on PS4."

Are you for real? Comparing a Free to play game? That's like comparing it to Fortnite lol. Next time compare them to Physical and digital games.

Kiwi661465d ago (Edited 1465d ago )

This article is about xbox so why bring up ps when they weren't mentioned in it or do you get paid to promote it in every article even if it has nothing to do with them

King_Noctis1465d ago

Crossbuy was as not successful because it was primarily limited to some small first and third party games, as the Vita was not powerful enough to handle AAA games. Smart Delivery is on another level.

rainslacker1464d ago (Edited 1464d ago )

Its successful for what it is. It's still around. It was never really a system selling feature, but more a way to promote games themselves. I'm sure if Sony wanted to expand it to be more relevant, they could, but they dont make a lot of multi-plat games to do it with. Ps4 and psvr are their only current active platforms. PS4 stuff would be good to add into the mix, but likely itll just be ps4 versions that have available enhanced versions and they run through their BC component.

MS is expanding on that, and I feel that's good. I do think some people are making it into more than it is though. I did the same thing with cross buy on PS3, although I tempered my expectations for big 3rd party games.

Gaming4Life19811465d ago

@ApocalypseShadow

You must really hate xbox, I mean you try and downplay every single thing.

ApocalypseShadow1465d ago (Edited 1465d ago )

Not the box. You can't hate plastic. Just the company's decisions. Like EA. Doesn't matter though. It's the point made.

If Sony does it, it will still be called CROSS BUY. Buy one version, you can play the other version.

Play it up as much as you like. It's what you guys do. Like BC. It's still basically buying one copy to play the others. No matter what extra features you get. No matter what name you give it.

Only thing different is the Kool-aid that's being drank.

Christopher1464d ago

Not quite the same. Your DCUO saves are saved on the end of the server, not on your end. That's why you log into DCUO. MMOs in general who move from XBO to XSX as well as PS4 to PS5 will all do this. TESO will do it. FFXIV will do it.

This is accepting the same save file from XBO to XSX, which is either from your own device or stored in the cloud. But, it's not being taken from the game's server.

umair_s511465d ago

Neat. Forward thinking from Xbox.

darthv721465d ago (Edited 1465d ago )

Umm... isnt this the same as what the xbo does already with game saves... using the cloud? when I load up a 360 game on my xbo, my game save is there. And when i go back and play on my 360, and it asks me where my save file is, I point it to my cloud file and it loads right up.

When i played gears 5 on my phone with game pass, it saved my progress to the cloud and then when i played on my x it picked up right where i left off. So basically with the cloud, and your profile, there will always be your game saves with you. Even if i sign into my profile on a W10 PC and choose to play some cuphead... my progress is there.

So when it comes to the SX, and a game that is cross gen it will do the exact same thing. It isnt like it will see the SX as a new game, but the same game you played earlier... just on a different system. Now if a game is a remaster, then it is considered a new game. Otherwise Id be able to use my game progress in bayonetta and vanquish on 360 with the 10th anniversary edition on xbo.

Japanese Fans Are Puzzled That Yasuke Is In ‘Assassin’s Creed Shadows’

The new trailer for 'Assassin’s Creed Shadows' has dropped and this time it’s set in feudal Japan, but some Japanese gamers are puzzled that it includes Yasuke.

Vits2h ago

I think they are a bit late for that complaint though. Assassin's Creed has ditched historical accuracy for probably a decade at this point. I do agree that a lot of the 'traditional' AC gameplay shouldn't work with Yasuke though; pretty much every stealth segment in the open or any secret gathering of intel should simply not work at all and be impossible for the guy. But those play a significantly smaller role in modern AC.

Real talk, im sure the game will be A$$, its almost a guarantee for anything EA releases anymore.

It's not worth it to release on PC day 1. The technical nightmare juice isn't worth the squeeze.
